"Is This The Face Of A Thief?"

Film Synopsis:

Mild-mannered businessman Sandy Patterson travels from Denver to Miami to confront the deceptively harmless-looking woman who has been living it up after stealing Sandy's identity.

My Take:

I so wanted it to be different, as I love the cast and the idea, but if I cut off a finger every time I laughed during Identity Thief, I would still be typing this review. The films idea seemed like a great springboard for a comedy, even if it bites hard from Plains, Trains and Automobiles, Due Date and two of my personal favorite comedies, Nothing To Lose and Midnight Run. It's the story of Sandy Patterson (Bateman), who learns the hard way that is identity has been stolen. In order to save his new job and get the person responsible, he decides to confront the thief (Bridesmaids' Melissa McCarthy), and make her go with him on a road trip back home to prove what has happened. Of course along the way there are road bumps, people chasing them, silly situations and the requisite bit of unfulfilling sappy heart any self respecting comedy seems to need to throw in these days.

So what went wrong? Its pretty simple really. It never went far enough in any situation or subplot. The comedy gets a bit raunchy at times, but never raunchy enough. Bateman's Sandy never got pissed off enough, even when deciding to go get this person across the country. Bateman is great as the quintessential "straight man", but here I felt like his shtick is wearing thin. Melissa McCarthy is good, and proves again she has great comedic timing, however, her character needed a bit more nastiness, more funny lines and a bit deeper of a sad back-story. Then there is not one, but two different sets of baddies following the two of them across country, and never did it feel all that threatening. In fact the subplot of the drug dealers following her because her phony credit cards got them in trouble was just a complete waste of time. The bottom line is Identity Thief is cute at best, an OK time waster but a flat movie that is lacking on laughs and heart, two things it tried so hard to have.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for sexual content and language.

Identity Thief comes to Blu-ray disc from Universal featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 25.8 mbps DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.8 mbps.

The Identity Thief is a looker. And no, I am not talking about the lead, Melissa McCarthy. The video is a strong, filmed digitally it transfers to Blu-ray with all the attributes we would expect. Strong and stable contrast, blacks that looked amazing on both my displays, resolution of finer details on all the nouns (people, places and things), as well as an over-all depth only the best release can have. Skin-tones are generally right on but the films real life colors are its only downfall as they never pop off the screen. The Lossless DTS-HD audio track is more than pedestrian when it has moments to show its legs. LFE does have oomph and surrounds are mixed very well, but the need for these effects are limited. Dialouge is always discernible and musical cues sound great from the front speakers.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) 2 Versions of the Movie (Extended Cut is 9 mins longer)

  • (HD) Scene Stealing: Capturing the humor of Identity Thief

  • (HD) The Making of Identity Thief

  • (HD) The Skiptracer's Van Tour

  • (HD) Alternate Takes

  • (HD) Gag Reel

  • (HD) Digital Copy

  • (HD) UV Copy

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Worth a viewing when nothing else is on, Identity Thief is another passable comedy that blows its wad in its trailer. Jason Bateman is, well, Jason Bateman, and McCarthy is the best part of it all, however, it is just sort-of boring and uninspired. At least the A/V is pretty darn good, and for those who somehow want to watch it over and over, Universal treats us to an included extended addition, a DVD copy, a UV Copy as well is an Itunes digital copy. The bottom line is The Identity Thief is cute at best, an OK time waster, but a flat movie that is lacking on laughs and heart, two things it tried so hard to have.

I agree with the review, just kind of a blah movie. Not offensively bad but nothing really that good about it. I think Bateman (almost Batman!) is great in general but this one is just flat and IMHO not worth the money or time.

Seen it in the theaters with my wife and we laughd pretty hard at times. Most of it was irritating though as the guy just kept getting screwed. Worth a rent espcially if you like the actors.
