"Bringin' it back home."

Film Synopsis:

Battle of the Year attracts all the best teams from around the world, but the Americans haven't won in fifteen years. Dante enlists Blake to assemble a team of the best dancers and bring the Trophy back to America where it started.

My Take:

Critically panned, box office flop, terrible scores all over the web. Here we go again. I was ready for the worst and I am not really into these type of flick. I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. The film is the epitome of cliche but whatever, they were not going for anything other than what it was- a sappy underdog melodrama with really good dancing.

The story goes a little something like this.

We have a super rich ex B-Boy (this is the term coined for the break dancing in the flick) Dante(Laz Alonso), who made his fortune promoting B-Boying. He sees a declining interest in the style of dancing and wants to make it gain more momentum in the states. It has been 15 years since the US has won the "Battle Of The Year", an international B-Boy dance contest. Dante recruits another Ex B-Boyer, Jason "WB" Blake (Josh Holloway of Lost fame) to captain and build a new team to try to take home the title. Of course along the way the road is filled with half-assed drama and issues, almost as filler segue to the great looking and sounding dance numbers. I didn't mind that it missed its mark dramatically as it didn't kill the movie. I did still enjoy the characters, some of their story-arcs and the dancing was great.

Fans of the genre will be pleased, but don't go in expecting a heart wrenching come-from-behind drama with inspired acting and film-making. It's a decent time-waster that looks and sounds amazing.

Parental Guide:

Language and some rude behavior

Battle of the Year comes to Blu-ray disc from Sopny featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24.2 mbps DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.8 mbps.

Battle of the Year is another stunner from Sony. The digitally filmed movie sparkles with dazzling colors that pop off the screen, what appears to be pitch perfect flesh-tones as well as inky and stable black levels. Fine details are apparent all over each frame and the combination of all these elements give the imagery a nice on screen dimension only the best of encodes have. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack is one heck of a performer. Its Hip-Hop soundtrack has booming yet tight LFE, crisp and defined high end and punchy mids. The battle sequences combine the music with crowd noise and atmospherics that are wholly enveloping. Quieter times come through wonderfully with well mixed dialog and a near perfect sound-stage.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Extended Dance Sequences

  • (HD) This is Planet B-Boy: Inside the Culture

  • (HD) The Art of B-Boying: A Guide to Breaking

  • (HD) Preparing for Battle: Training and Rehearsal

  • (HD) UV Copy

Final Thoughts:

Battle of the Year is not breaking any new ground, however, fans of the genre and casual viewers alike will enjoy it, but not remember it. I sure liked it better than Stomp the Yard 2 that I reviewed a while back (here). Great dancing, great sound, great video and an OK movie make it worth checking out, but a rental seems the safest bet.
