"Never drop the con"

My Take:

Focus tells the tale of Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith), a con man who becomes taken with an amateur con artist (Margot Robbie). He takes her under his wing but as past experiences has proved, things like love and family don't mix with the game and life of the con. Three years later they cross paths in Buenos Aires on the race-car circuit as Nicky is making a high stakes deal. It soon becomes a game of who is conning who, with the big question being, can Nicky keep Focus with his old flame is back in his world?

Does Focus stand up to the level of the great Con films such as The Sting or House of Games? No. But it was a fun, flashy film that took the genre seriously while having some funny moments (thanks to support player Adrian Martinez), and a decent bit of sexual tension between the film's leads. The cons here had me fooled a few times, and it was some of the smaller games that took me by surprise, and it was a bit of a let down that they were more interesting then the films "Big Con".

I enjoyed how it could keep me focused on the characters and emotions as a sort-of slight of hand as it did its magic right in front of my eyes. There are some great turns with the supporting actors, especially the film's most memorable scene staring BD Wong (Jurassic Park, OZ), that had me on the edge of my seat. I went into Focus with really low expectations after some reviews trashed the film, and I came out surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

Parental Guide:
Rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100/EXCELLENT = 83-91/GOOD = 74-82/AVERAGE = 65-73/BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

Focus comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Home Entertainment featuring 1.85:1 1080p AVC video with an average bitrate of 28.2 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD MA Master 7.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 4.2 Mbps.

Focus was really easy on the eyes. Yep, the video quality as well as the Margot Robbie quality. Colors had a sort-of of 80s Micheal Mann quality to them, though more subdued then his Miami Vice Pastels. Flesh-tones were natural yet a bit sun-baked, and blacks were inky and stable. The film had souped up contrast, with finer details that were strong on close-ups but never too impressive on the longer shots and fore-ground imagery.

The Lossless audio track was the stand out here. In the few moments it had to shine we were treated to some great 360 degree sound during the raceway and the Super Bowl scenes. LFE was impressive when utilized, however, that was very limited. As a film where the viewer is focused on every nuance of every word, Focus never had in issue with dialogue getting swallowed up.

Bonus Features:
  • (HD)Masters of Misdirection: The Players in a Con
  • (HD)Will Smith: Gentleman Thief
  • (HD)Margot Robbie: Stealing Hearts
  • (HD)Deleted Scenes and Alternate Opening
  • DVD Disc
  • UV Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

After reading a few bad reviews, I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Focus. I will definitely be watching it again as I feel the title is almost poking at the audience knowing we will be wrapped up in the over-all story arch as the cons are unfolding. Superlative A/V adds to the experience and a few short but watchable extra features round off this release. I suggest giving it a shot, but who knows?? Maybe I thought Focus completely stunk and I'm trying to pull one over on you?

Thank you for the review. Good movie.

Wasn't this supposed to be in DTS-HD MA 7.1?

It had potentials, but really fell apart at the end.

Margot Robbie and Adrian Martinez save the day in this one. Without her natural feeling and utterly charming performance and the great chemistry the two of them had in their scenes together, this would have been one bland and boring film.

Looky here!

Watched it last night, was okay but not that exciting. Good for a rental only.

I just walked out on this movie and left wife watching it alone. And in the time for me to walk to the computer and start typing this I can already hear that she also gave up on it. Visuals looked great to me and the audio was also great. I probably would have rated it higher than what the OP did. But the story was just terrible. So many holes in this that.. I have to ask "When do so many holes in something just becomes a blank thing?"

Man, Will what happened?

SPOILER:
I got up to the point where Will evidently got a lady to drop her purse so the girl could try to find the owner and he meets up with her with a bottle of wine and start to talk. At the end of that exchange it was all over for me. Like past poor movies it motivated me to get working on that time machine again to get back those lost minutes of my life.

It's I who'll get the last laugh Will
