"Every Child Needs to Feel Loved"

My Take:

Greta (Cohan) is a young American woman who takes a job as a nanny in a remote English village. She soon discovers that the family’s 8-year-old is a life-sized doll that they care for just like a real boy, as a way to cope with the death of their son 20 years prior. After violating a list of strict rules, a series of disturbing and inexplicable events bring Greta’s worst nightmare to life, leading her to believe that the doll is actually alive.

I find that with supernatural horror films it is essential that the elements contained within the story allow us to identify with it on a level that successfully draws us in prior to unleashing the evil required to generate chilling suspense and terror. I didn’t have that experience. This is a decidedly contrived film, beginning with the paint by the numbers script which includes a series of been there and done that encounters and a ridiculous ending that drops in like a kick in the teeth when things begin to finally get interesting. The cast of unknowns does little to add to the proceedings. At 98 minutes this film can't sustain its runtime resulting in pacing that is abysmally slow. The end result is a lackluster genre entry that is just plain forgettable.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for violence and terror, and for some thematic material.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100/EXCELLENT = 83-91/GOOD = 74-82/AVERAGE = 65-73/BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

The Boy comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 27 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.9 Mbps.

This film utilizes a stylized design that is meant to create a visual aesthetic that supports its thematic elements. The predominating palette is limited, with little chromatic saturation, which results in a sort of teal/sepia aesthetic. Blacks are deep, with appreciable gradations and dynamic highlights that surface when onscreen with mixed light/dark content. This is a predominantly dark film that contains many sequences shot in low lit environs and natural lighting. While there is some loss of visibility in dark backgrounds contrast and brightness levels aren’t overdriven and work in tandem to preserve detail in dark and light elements onscreen. Images onscreen appear lucid and sharp. Close ups reveal lots of fine detail in the faces, hair and clothing worn by the cast members. Long range shots aren’t resolved quite as well but appear dimensionally satisfying.

I think this is a fairly well-designed lossless audio presentation that plays well to the film’s thematic tone. It effectively uses the entire sound field to elicit reaction to sounds emanating from differing vantage points and off screen cues. The soundtrack’s recorded elements are enhanced by its rich clarity, and punchy dynamics. Dialogue through the center channel is crystal clear and maintains a position of prominence within the front soundstage. The rear channels contain a mixture of spatial ambience as well as directional panning cues that effectively correlate with the events transpiring onscreen. All in all this is a solid audio/video presentation that compliments the film quite nicely.

Bonus Features:
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

The Boy is a supernatural horror/thriller that brings nothing original to the table and winds up a contrived, flavorless and ultimate ineffective genre entry. It comes to Blu-ray from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring solid high definition audio/video. The Boy is an unremarkable film that is best left for viewing on late night cable TV.

To bad for the cheap jump scares and bad ending because it had some potential to be realy good. Now it is, again, a very average horror....

That's the audio and video rating, not what he rated the actual movie.

The premise appears to be about the only thing interesting, to which case all that follows is a running leap off of a precipice.

Afraid I have to disagree with the lot of you. I thought The Boy was a solid watch. Though the ending was as predictable and cliche as the punchline to a Dane Cook joke, i found the atmosphere and that ghastly doll to be creepy as hell! I enjoyed the jump scares and few moments of chest slamming, wall rattling LFE. It's worth a one-time viewing.

The Boy was pretty good IMO. I liked much much better than Annabelle, which is similar. I really enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It's definitely one of the better "doll" movies. It's got an intriguing plot that makes you want to finish it.

Regards,
So true.....I liked The Conjuring but couldn't get into Annabelle, might just be a doll thing, although I liked Chucky movies but they are so campy and maybe that's what Ive been programmed to like as far as dolls go.

Most memorable horror movie for me was Motel Hell, I may have issues..lol

"Wall rattling LFE"? -- strange that appears to be the only mention of this being a possible instant classic. Won't be the first time a headline got buried, but strikes me that two words "doll horror," might sum up most of what else needs to be said here -- quality of the LFE is going to tell the tale on this effort -- honestly: doll horror, lacking LFE -- almost certainly a derivative, rehash waste of time, add the outstanding LFE... we could be talking must-own cinematic delight -- now which is it?

Watched this last night. I thought the build up and suspense was pretty good at the beginning and was spooked a couple times, but the second we realized the true nature of the "boy" it was very ho-hum until the end.

On the other hand, seeing the woman from Walking Dead in lingerie made up for it She is a real fox, hope to see her in more movies.

If I had been in charge of this movie I'd have turned the doll into a super-creepy, super-jealous, super-freak version of Chucky and turned the end of the movie into a crazy gore-fest. That at least would have been satisfying.

Heard good things about this movie. That it was this year's IT FOLOWS.

I think that category goes to THE WITCH. Best horror film of the year.
