"She turned to her past to protect her family."

My Take:

Jane Got A Gun is the tale of Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) and her fight for her family, her land and her life. The film opens as her husband Bill Hammond (Noah Emmerich) arrives home barely alive and riddled with bullets. After finding out it was John Bishop's (Ewan McGregor) gang that was behind the attack, she comes to the realixation that they will not stop until Bill and her family are dead. In a state of desperation Jane looks to her old flame Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for help protecting her family. Emotions reach a fever pitch as Jane's past collides with her present in her battle for survival.

Being a fan of good westerns I was happy to give Jane Got A Gun a spin. I found the film to be a bit slow and it never had the strongest narrative. Plagued with issues during its production, the movie had a choppy feel and was especially awkward during its flashback scenes. Not all was bad as Portman and Edgerton had palpable chemistry, even if she is not the obvious choice for a western heroine. My main disappointment was in Ewan McGregor's portrayal of the films villain, as he came across more smarmy than evil. Fans of westerns will still get enough out of the film as it hits many of the genre's familiar tropes, has a strong beginning and a rewarding conclusion, however, Jane Got A Gun makes much more sense on home video then in the cinemaplex hence the distributors choice to land this one direct to video.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for violence and some language

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100/EXCELLENT = 83-91/GOOD = 74-82/AVERAGE = 65-73/BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

Jane Got A Gun comes to Blu-ray disc from Anchor Bay/Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 25.6 mbps DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.8 mbps.[/B]

Jane Got A Gun is a pleasing Bluray experience with a few stand-out attributes. Fist with its black levels and shadow details that had a few scenes where I was looking for it to crush. Thankfully it never did making the night time scenes stick out. Then there was a scene of gunfire that was concussive and dynamic, and came at and around from all angles with what sounded to me like I was genuinely caught in the cross-fire. Colors and details were well above average, thought the film was shot with a very warm hue. I had no issues with dialogue and the film was very proficient with both its audio and video presentation.

Bonus Features:
  • UltraViolet (UV) Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Jane Got A Gun is a decent western that never lives up to its potential. The film is worth a rental and is curiously interesting as you get to see three Star Wars prequel vets (Portman, McGregor and Edgerton) in a film together again. I don't think a purchase is smart here, as even though the film has quite an enjoyable A/V presentation, this Blu-ray release has no supplemental features.

Westerns always get my attention and it's good to see they continue to get made. A solid well-made western, I give Jane Got a Gun "3 SPURS".

Altogether too predictable, this story lacks any real substance. Re-watch potential: "0".

The plot seems to be pretty straight forward and not quite novel. However, a well done Western is always welcomed even if just as a rental or caught on late night TV.

Lee, I'll just say that the first thing that popped into my mind was a rather odd Western "The Quick and the Dead." Any comparisons worth noting?

One would wonder if the original director, the original premise for the film had gone through what the result would've been and compare both of them

say like Shrader's Exorcist and Renny Harlin's

Considering Westerns are by nature a bit slow, to have you say it was slow means it must have been moving along at a snails pace lol... sorta like Hateful 8, man that was god awfully slow....

Thumbs up Two Words

Thanks for the review Lee. Westerns are fun and loads better than zombie movies IMO.

Is this a straight-to-video release?

I've never even heard of this movie. Maybe it didn't make it to my home town theaters.

You had me at, "western." You lost me at, "Natalie Portman." She is proof The Academy is a joke when they gave that no talent hack an Oscar. She peaked at 13.

Theatrical release trivia:

Since the studio didn't think much of Carpenter's Halloween, the Executive producer Irwin Yablans tested the waters by releasing it in fringe cities first on a very limited release schedule....first city? Kansas City.

Halloween opened in four theaters in Kansas City. Yablans recalled the opening Friday night gross was an underwhelming $200 per theater, but positive reception brought daily grosses to between $1600-2000 per theater within a week.
