"Private Dicks"

My Take:

The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.

The Nice Guys is a throwback private eye caper flick that capably captures the fun, character driven essence that makes films of its ilk enjoyable. The plot is appropriately simple incorporating a conspiracy based narrative that requires two wonderfully drawn archetypes to team up, overcome their differences, and save the day. Co-written by director Shane Black, this film ticks all the right boxes as its quantifiable L.A. Noir style story resonates with delightful energy, spot on period references, and pitch perfect humor that is complimented by the superb chemistry between leads Gosling and Crowe. With the litany of disposable action/crime stories we see today The Nice Guys is a refreshing genre entry with an entertaining vibe that elevated it to a level that made it memorable and fun.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for violence, sexuality, nudity, language and brief drug use.

  • Resolution/Clarity:
  • Black Level/Shadow Detail:
  • Color Reproduction:

  • Compression:

The Nice Guys comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 28 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.8 Mbps.

This high definition video presentation looks great and features a distinctive visual aesthetic that utilizes a reserved chromatic palette which makes use of sepia tones and muted primary colors. Certain sequences/elements make bolder use of color with noticeably deeper saturation. Contrast and brightness are well balanced which results in distortion free and satisfying image quality. Blacks appear deep and punchy but delineation in low level scenes can range from very good to average. Flesh tones are a bit on the bland side but retain enough complexional variety to avoid appearing lifeless. Close ups offer appreciable texture and subtle refinement. Wide angle shots, especially those shot in the natural light of day, have excellent depth, with sharp resolute definition quality that is rarely questionable. I didn’t notice any signs of compression or video related artifacts.

The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio sound keeps pace with the video and is quite good. Dynamics are robust and highs are crisp without being strident or edgy. Dialog is rendered with defining tonal expression and room penetrating depth through the center channel. The front soundstage is diffused with excellent separation and clearly articulated detail. The presentation makes ample use of the entire surround platform. At times it opens up quite nicely to create an involving surround mix containing a mix of directional and ambient sounds. Bass response doesn’t reach subterranean levels however it appropriately supports the source elements and provides an appreciably tight, and punchy low end.

Bonus Features:
  • (HD Always Bet on Black – 5 minute featurette
  • (HD) Worst. Detectives. Ever: Making The Nice Guys – 6 minute featurette
  • Bonus DVD
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

The Nice Guys is a throwback private eye caper/buddy flick that capably captures the fun, character driven essence that makes films of its ilk so enjoyable. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring solid high definition audio/video quality mated with a disappointing supplemental package that contains only a pair of bland production featurettes. I thoroughly enjoyed The Nice Guys and highly recommend it when you’re in the mood for something off the beaten path.

This looks like a good Redbox que item for me. Sometimes nonsense makes sense and this film seems to fit the bill for a nice action comedy.

Thanks Ralph for the heads up.

Nice review Ralph. I had a lot of solid laughs throughout the movie and Crowe and Gossling were hilariously seedy looking. At the very least, this one is a top of the list rental.

Thanks Ralph. I had not even heard about this movie so thanks for bringing it to my attention. I like this genre of movies, so it will be going on my Netflix queue immediately. I love it when you bring a movie not known to me to my attention. It has happened a few times before and I've enjoyed most of them.

Bought this one on digital download few weeks back. Liked it, but didn't like it as much as I wanted. A solid rental.

I saw The Nice Guys in the theater and loved it. Quick, witty, and an excellent performance from the girl who plays Gosling's daughter. Picked it up today, can't wait to watch it again.

One of the worst movies i have seen this year
Bad acting (and i`m a big fan of Russel Crowe), bad directing, chaotic script, an absolute waste of time & money

I liked Angourie Rice. Without her I would have felt lost a little. I gave it a 3.5 (out of 5)...just watched the Blu last night.
The party was cool. The opening was cool. The bar scene was cool. The colors were colorful.

I got this as a birthday present last week and loved it. Was too busy to catch it at the cinema but will make up for it by watching this fairly often. Disappointing it did not make enough money for a sequel--I'd love another adventure for these two. Oh well. The 70s live on, baby.

Would you guys say it is a dark comedy or a dry sense of humor movie? I really don't like those at all. I want to rent this one hopefully this weekend considering it has good reviews.

I would say the movie had a bit of a dry side to it in reference to comedy. I myself like some dry comedy but I just could not get into the Nice Guys.

I enjoyed the movie but I think Shane Black did a better version with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Saw this movie tonight via Netflix rental. I expected it to be funnier then it was. The story was good though and it had it's bass moments especially in regards to the music. The daughter of Gosling's character really stole the show.
