"One girl's triumphant path to becoming a chess champion"

My Take:

Based on the true story of a young girl, Phiona Mutesi, from the streets of Katwe, in Uganda, whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence, and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.

I am generally drawn to inspirational dramas especially those based on true events/people. Set against the backdrop of a small, poverty stricken, Ugandan village, I am not surprised that I never heard this story. Queen of Katwe is a heartwarming, and spirited drama, that like many of its predecessors strikes the right chords via a conventionally framed narrative that engages with an inspirational thematic tone that revolves around genuine characters that you come to care about. The drama/melodrama only occasionally gets in the way of the film’s feel good build up and pitch perfect familial context which is spot on.

Queen of Katwe probably isn’t the fact-based drama that everyone will be talking about around the water cooler, but for those of us that never tire of being inspired by those willing to put it all on the line to fulfill a dream, it’s an entertaining, and uplifting way to spend two hours.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for thematic elements, an accident scene and some suggestive material.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100/EXCELLENT = 83-91/GOOD = 74-82/AVERAGE = 65-73/BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

Queen of Katwe comes to Blu-ray Disc from Disney featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 31 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.5 Mbps.

This is a pleasing high definition video presentation that delivers quality which is on par with a newer release film coming to Blu-ray Disc. Colors appear natural with pleasing depth and vivid reproduction of both primary and secondary elements. Complexions are realistically depicted with defining texture, and good tonal separation. Blacks are respectable but don’t offer the depth that make them stand out. Detail in low light and dark backgrounds is estimable. Images offer excellent dimensional depth, stable sharpness, and definitive clarity This rendering appears to faithfully represent the film’s elements which when all is said and done is quite good.

The audio presentation is solid and renders the elements present in the soundtrack with aplomb. Dialogue is clearly articulated through the center channel and the film’s music holds sway over the soundstage with authority and crystal clarity. Aural perspective is primarily leans toward the front channels however spatial/venue replicating effects and diffuse ambience is fed to the rear channels which provides an effective sense of envelopment.

Bonus Features:
  • (HD) Queen of Katew - Their Story (3 featurettes totaling 28 minutes):
    1. A Spark of Inspiration
    2. Those Who Guide
    3. The Future is Bright
  • Audio Commentary
  • (HD) A Fork, A Spoon, & a Knight – 13 minute short film
  • (HD) Music
  • (HD) 8 Deleted Scenes with Director Introduction
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi—a teenage chess prodigy from the slums of Uganda, Queen of Katwe is a heartwarming, and spirited drama, that strikes the right chords via a conventionally framed narrative that engages with an inspirational thematic tone that revolves around characters that you come to care about. It comes to Blu-ray from Disney featuring excellent high definition picture and sound mated with a worthwhile supplemental offering that offers a glimpse behind the scenes and look at the real people involved. Queen of Katwe makes for a great rental when you’re in the mood for a bit of heartwarming inspiration on movie night.

I liked this as well. The pacing could have been improved a bit, but that's a minor complaint. The acting was excellent and the video quality was quite good and occasionally jaw-droppingly good Nice review Ralph.
