"Believe in Second Chances"

My Take:

After befriending a kind police officer, nine-year-old Zucchini is taken to a foster home filled with other orphans his age. Though he struggles to find his place at first, with the help of his new friends, Zucchini learns to trust and love again as he searches for a new family of his own. With a band of unforgettable characters, you’ll be cheering for, My Life as a Zucchini stands as a testament to the resilience of the human heart.

Nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature, My Life as a Zucchini is inspired by the novel by Giles Paris entitled “ Autobiographie d’une Courgette”. As seen through the eyes of an adolescent named Courgette, whose nickname is “Zucchini” this is touching tale that deals with universal themes that revolve around familial dysfunction, loss, overcoming adversity and the uplifting power of friendship. I watched it with my wife and adult daughter and we absolutely loved it. By the times the credits rolled there wasn’t a dry eye among us.

My Life as a Zucchini turned out to be much more than we anticipated and is one of those unknown “diamonds in the rough” that remind me why I enjoy my job as a reviewer.

My Life as a Zucchini comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 34 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3 Mbps.

This film features beautifully crafted animation that looks superb in high definition. The color range mates perfectly with the source material and are reproduced naturally, revealing subtle degrees of delineation that sparkle. Each of the characters has distinctive physical qualities that are attributable to them and all are easily discernable. The video is immaculately resolved with pristine quality and fine minutia that shows strict attention to detail. The facial features of the various characters have a lifelike quality that allows them to display a varied range of emotions. Contrast and black levels strike a great balance as whites are bright, detailed and punchy while blacks exhibit discernible depth and dynamic range. This is a resplendent, polished, and beautifully rendered Blu-ray presentation that looks fabulous on my large front projection display.

The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio presentation renders the source elements with excellent clarity and punchy dynamics. Dialog is delivered with appreciable tonal variation and refinement. The surrounds are active at times and used to good effect for front/rear channel pans and reproduction of music related ambience. The mix isn’t very aggressive but does create an enjoyable listening experience that matches the tone of the film.

Bonus Features:
  • The Making of My Life as a Zucchini – 18 minute featurette
  • The Genie in a Tin of Ravioli – 7 minute Animated Short
  • U.S. Trailer
  • Bonus DVD
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, My Life as a Zucchini is inspired by the novel by Giles Paris entitled “ Autobiographie d’une Courgette”, and is a touching, and entertaining family film that deals with universal themes that revolve around familial dysfunction, loss, overcoming adversity, and the uplifting power of friendship. It comes to Blu-ray from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring sparkling high definition video, crystal clear lossless sound, and a light supplemental package that includes a worthwhile production featurette, and animated short. My Life as a Zucchini is truly a must-see film for genre fans and comes highly recommended on Blu-ray.

Humm. Wow is right, but sometimes the BD pops up on Netflix once it releases.

It is available at http://www.store-3d-blurayrental.com...fe-as04-17.htm

Redbox doesn't seem to have it at all but then it's still not released yet.

Other options, the public library. Buying then reselling (something I used to do a lot of in the past but Half Price Books doesn't give you anything for BDs anymore (they still sell them for full price through), they were easy, I need to find another place to do this, maybe AVS or http://www.blu-ray.com/.

Cheers,

Just got through watching this; totally enjoyable !
Didn't need as much Kleenex as I expected _ when animals are involved, yes, but not so much with people.
People have more potential to bounce back because we have reason and rationalization, so human tragedies don't hurt so much knowing this.
Animals are instinctive, they just keep on hurting until something changes.

About the sets and stop motion animation _ I always have to think for a while about the staggering amount of physical effort that goes into it.
Move it, take a picture _ move it, take a picture _ move it, take a picture...

I look for details in the sets _ the snow !
What did they use to make the snow here, I thought it was very well done ?!

It would have been nice to see this get best animation.
I can't help but think sometimes that Disney knows whos strings to pull.

I have nothing against Disney, but it would be nice to see someone else get the cake for a change.
