"Some Things Were Never Meant to be Controlled"

My Take:

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything...and everyone along with it.

Looking at the cast for Geostorm would lead one to believe that the chances of it being a decent disaster thriller are quite good. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Beginning with an implausible concept, and poorly shaped characters, the plot revisits themes we’ve seen before, by glossing over the elements necessary to make for a solid foundational story. On top of that, the attempts to interweave meaningful drama, miss altogether, leaving a hodgepodge of a movie, that resulted in constant eyerolling. The production elements aren’t terrible, but this one doesn’t smack of a big-ticket blockbuster with an unlimited budget either. The performances weren’t any better, but some of that was owed to the cheesy dialog written for them.

When all was said and done, Geostorm didn’t make the grade, and was a bit on the painful side to watch.

Replay Value:

Parental Guide:

The rating is for destruction, action, violence.

Geostorm comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 28 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.7 Mbps.

This is a pleasing high definition presentation that exhibits video quality that is faithful to the film’s theatrical elements and consistent with a new release coming Blu-ray Disc. Much of the film is adorned by a sepia toned aesthetic that combines with the use of browns, beiges, and crimson to set the mood intended by the filmmakers. It rarely makes for eye catching imagery but the results are pleasing. Fleshtones tend to look a little balmy and fall in line with the film’s visual elements. Contrast is spot on and blacks are fairly delineated and deep. Images are crisp and resolute with defining sharpness that provides appreciable dimension. The video is whistle clean and shows no obvious signs of compression errors or video related anomalies.

The 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack doesn’t disappoint. This is an entertaining mix that utilizes the entire system to create a theater like experience. Sound staging is excellent as both the front and rear channels are seamlessly integrated. Sound effects traverse the room during the large-scale disaster sequences. Dynamics are energy filled and impact felt with discerning articulation and resolute clarity. This is a fairly aggressive mix that makes regular use of the subwoofer to accentuate its already strong dynamics. The quality of the bass is first rate as it is fills the room with clean, hard hitting, and deep resonating low frequency energy. Chapters 7 to 9 make for great demonstration sequences. Dialog has excellent presence, with defining vocal character, and clarity. This is a solid overall presentation that helped make this film just a bit more entertaining.

Bonus Features:
  • “Wreaking Havoc: Cutting edge visual effects, research and technology create the world of Geostorm.
  • Search for Answers: Inspired by his daughter’s question of why can’t global warming be stopped, Director Dean Devlin retraces the creative journey that led to Geostorm.
  • An International Event: A global cast opens up about the secrets behind Geostorm.
  • Bonus DVD
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Geostorm is a poorly crafted disaster movie that clearly strove to be more, but simply lacked a script capable of delivering a story that would have made it palatable enough for genre junkies to thrive on. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring solid technical merits, mated with a middling supplemental set. Geostorm isn’t a very good movie. I can’t really recommend it for cable TV since the only thing that potentially makes it worth watching at all is its Blu-ray presentation. So, if you’re looking for something to rent to give your surround sound system some work, you might consider this. Otherwise it’s a pass.

Thanks Ralph,
For every dollar you get me to spend on a film, you save me a dollar on another.
This sounds like a wait for commercial TV, power nap time, feature.
How many past global disaster movies going back to "Towering Inferno" and "Poseidon Adventure" have cast top rate actors and then delivered a cut rate movie.

Was this movie in the theaters beyond it's opening weekend? I don't recall it being in the theaters for very long at all.

I couldn't agree with Ralph more. Here's a quote from my review: "The screenplay telegraphed its “surprise” elements with less-than subtle clues from the dialog, and the third act is a virtual “how not to make special effects look real” special feature. Seriously, it should be studied by film students worldwide on how NOT to jump the shark."

@Ralph Potts , would you agree? My wife and I were laughing constantly and we don't think that was the director's intent!

You wouldn't make it 30 seconds in this film before feeling that way. My wife and I both had our eyes rolling into our heads over it.

We watched this in 3D last night. It's likely the worst movie I've seen in the last several years.

I can't believe how bad the acting was from every single actor in this movie.

Sharknado was far more entertaining..!

Lots of "not so great" comments here...
I'll watch any disaster movie, but I'll see how this pans out.

What could possibly top the special affects of 2012 though, when all of California slid into the Pacific ?

One of the best things about a disaster movie is that no one actually dies or gets hurt, one can sit back and watch the absolute destruction, people being frozen, burned etc... and not have to worry about any of it actually happening.

For a disaster movie, there wasn't enough disaster in it, nor did the main characters centre much around it.
I feel the scenes of destruction could have been extended way more, with more character development in that respect.

I found the CGI pretty good, but like I said, I just wanted to see more of it.
I would have liked to have seen some of the cities get obliterated from the Geo Storm.

And what's bad acting, Jim Sturgis's chin quivering while he was welling up with tears ???
Someone would have to point that out to me; bad acting that is ?

I watched this for what the movie was supposed to be, destruction and disaster and I found it came up short.

I enjoyed Ralph's review more than the movie.

Can someone explain how Gerard Butler launched into space without wearing a pressurized spacesuit or helmet?

As for Ed Harris, let's just say my suspicion was correct as soon as it was time to ponder such things.

I went to see this in IMAX 3D and had a very good time. I don't know why all the hate here. It simply delivered what it set out to be. To be honest, I expected much much worse! The worst movie I've ever seen will always be Star Wars The Last Jedi, but at least this film I knew it wasn't going to be academy award winner by far. I knew what it was before going in, so I lowered my expectations and enjoyed it! Plan to buy it in 3D for my projector at home.

I saw the 3d version and, IMHO, it´s flat. One of the worst 3d presentations.

I like disaster movies, but also are tired of evil lecture, go Electric they say.
My last electric bill double from around $100, to over $200 just for plugging two car for this very cold winter last month, and it is not over for a few more

At least all my lights bulbs inside the house are LED, very low consumption
