"They’re Back"

My Take:

Under-appreciated and overburdened moms Amy, Kiki and Carla rebel against the challenges and expectations of the Super Bowl for moms: Christmas. As if creating the perfect holiday for their families isn't hard enough, they'll have to do it while hosting and entertaining their own respective mothers when they come to visit.

A Bad Moms Christmas comes at you with essentially the same feel, which is a storyline built around three Moms, each of whom has their share of problems, but now have to contend with their visiting mothers, who really need a time out. Unfortunately, this holiday themed sequel, which brings back the original's primary cast, lacks the subplots, and thematic balance that made its predecessor entertaining on several levels. Here the storyline is less interesting, and adheres to the same female-centric themed narrative that revolves around the complexities/frustrations of motherhood taken to the comedic next level, but now with oodles of crassness, overt sexual references, and awkward mother daughter interaction.

The attempts at meaningful drama fail, and the elements of romance that worked in the first film are nowhere to be found. The returning cast members fall right back into their respective roles and do well enough with what they are given to work with. As for the additions to the cast, I did rather enjoy Susan Sarandon in the role of Carla’s mother, but wasn't especially impressed with Cheryl Hines or Christine Baranski (who literally plays the same character in every movie!) in the roles of Kiki and Amy’s mothers.

If you enjoyed Bad Moms, A Bad Moms Christmas isn't terrible, but as sequels go it just feels like a rehashing with a mediocre script, and heavy handed direction. My reaction to it would be best described as lukewarm.

A Bad Moms Christmas comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 29 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.6 Mbps.

This is an excellent video presentation that seems a perfect match for the source material. Colors are deeply saturated with eye pleasing vitality and delineated depth. Images are resolute, with stable sharpness, and appreciable subtle refinement. Certain scenes appear better resolved than others although I suspect this is related to the photography. Contrast is dynamic without being overpowering and blacks are respectable in depth with discernible detail visible in low lighting and shadows. I didn’t see any signs of video related artifacts and thought that in general video quality was excellent.

This DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound track is cracking good, and delivers crystal clear sound that is rich in sonic detail and effortless dynamics. Excellent tonal balance makes pans across the left, center and right channels appear seamless. Bass reproduction is taut and on occasion exhibits a robust low end. The mix makes frequent use of the surrounds to reproduce the discrete and ambient sounds contained within the soundtrack. I enjoyed the enveloping nature of the audio and felt that the integration between the front and rear soundstages was spot on.

Bonus Features:
  • Gag Reel
  • Additional Scenes
  • Crew Music Video
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • Bonus DVD
  • Digital HD Copy

Final Thoughts:

A Bad Mms Christmas is a lackluster follow up to its more entertaining predecessor. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment in a solid offering that features strong technical merits and an abysmal supplemental package. I suspect that A Bad Moms Christmas will appeal more to diehard, “Bad Moms” fans and is tough to recommend. In that light I would suggest a rental prior to purchase.

Pretty bad money grab movie. Was hardly worth the time I lost. Only bright spot was Christine Baranski which is also a dark spot given that with all her talent she would get sucked into the [email protected] this movie was.

Upon seeing the trailer, I was both confused and disappointed that they weren't making this a sequel about the girls teaming up with Christina Applegate, like they implied was going to happen at the end of the first one. The first was surprisingly hilarious, I thought, and I would've been on-board for the sequel it seemed they were teasing. However, the sequel they did end up making did not look appealing at all.

Ugh. A movie designed, marketed, and targeted for the #metoo movement. Because, why can't women act like obnoxious men???

lol I suspect your problems are much more deep rooted than simple 'chauvinism' with such a hard line opinion as that.

Nope, happily married with daughters, great mom, no issues at all with women in general.

I just don't think they're funny. Ellen DeGeneres has perhaps made me chuckle a time or two. Amy Peeler once or twice. But in general, whether it's stand-up comedy or on-screen......it just lands flat with me.

That's actually a pretty commonly held opinion. Not unique to me.

I saw this tonight and really enjoyed it not as much as the first. It was a Netflix rental and I was surprised the disc actually had special features for a Universal title.
