I’m pretty sure when Ralph gives his score for the 1080p BD audio he’s scoring it as a non atmos mix. For instance he’s giving the 7.1 channel TrueHD presentation a 96.

Greetings,

BNestico is correct. I provide a rating for the 7.1 channel mix (Atmos core) so that those that aren't set up for Dolby Atmos playback have a frame of reference for the quality of the surround mix. You'll note that the rating parameters for each are different.

Regards,
then you can write Atmos score and Atmos core score just under it or in a bracket. so it does not change if i have a Atmos setup and see the movie with bluray. because it always makes me think that Bluray has an inferior audio quality.

Hi Ralph, maybe you can answer a question for me.

1) I always felt the standard Blu-ray version of The Matrix had anemic bass compared to the sequels. That was my major disappointment with the first movie.

Has this changed on the Ultra HD version? Is the bass deeper, louder and more dynamic? I especially felt the fight scenes lacked oomph on the Blu-ray, not sure if it was just me.

2) Is this a 7.1 soundtrack with Atmos or a 5.1 with Atmos?

It's clearly indicated 7.1 Dolby TrueHD (Atmos core) in the audio summary beneath the ratings.

Stephan, I agree with you regarding the lack of punch The Matrix had versus the sequels. That is much improved here as the response is deeper and louder. There is an improvement in dynamic range but, the track still retains much of the essence of the original. Not in a bad way. No worries, you won't be disappointed.

The Atmos core is Dolby TrueHD 7.1.

Greetings,

I noticed this during the Dojo and Jump Program scenes when making comparisons to the UHD version but, didn't run comparison to the original release. I have amended the review and made mention of it. I had this in my notes but neglected to include it.

Wow, Atmos score of 100. Really looking forward to watching this one now. Recently upgraded some of the speakers in my home theatre and am loving the fact that some excellent movies are being lovingly updated to today's standards. Truly a great time to be a home theatre enthusiast!!!

By improved dynamic range does this mean more aggressive dynamic range compression resulting in a louder track with less actual dynamic range?
Definitely curious to see the differences between the Atmos and older mixes tracks.

Greetings,

I wouldn't say that. The track wasn't compressed in my opinion. I found it to have better overall balance with a rich low end. Dialog and effects were better resolved too.

So I’m assuming based on the high video score that the inconsistent coloring of the DVD & Blu-Ray has been solved?

I have the DVD and never liked it. I was going to get the Blu-ray, but I happened to see it at a friends house and it wasn’t appreciably better than the DVD and still had some really bad occurrences of coloring in many scenes.

The color timing has been tweaked and now comes more in line with the original theatrical presentation.

Great review Ralph, thanks! I was thirteen in 1977 as well, probably the perfect age for Star Wars debut.

Thanks for the reply, Just gave it a try but still fixed on DV. I Have a Sony Vw500 projector and use the oppo hdr to sdr conversation and tone mapping options in hdr10 but this isn't a option in DV. Do you need to perform any kind of power cycle on the player?

I would suggest that you post this question in the Oppo 203 thread. I would prefer not to continue the discussion here as it's off topic. You will get the answer from the folks in that forum thread.

Thank you for the review! I was 14 when this released and was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this movie as a kid. When I heard they were doing a 4K remaster with Dolby Atmos I wet myself with anticipation. Everyone is gushing over this version and that makes me anticipate it even more! Cannot wait for Tuesday! Although oddly Wal-Mart and Best Buy show it as “shipping only,” which I found odd. Can’t wait to add this to my ever growing 4K collection.

Thanks for the review...I really appreciate the info about the BR having the Atmos soundtrack.

This is vital for me until I upgrade my projector (Dolby Vision also converts 24hz to 60hz, when also converting to SDR and 2020 to 709......) Just too may compromises on the way to getting immersive sound.

I don't even mind that the BR is not released on its own - as I am sure the UHD will come in handy one day.

I had started to stop looking at UHD titles with DV on them.

May is turning out to be an expensive month for UHD BLU-RAY. I decided to order this it will arrive on Friday. This was my go to disc even back then on DVD to demonstrate my audio gear! I am looking forward to the ATMOS track and better dynamic range as we recently upgraded receiver and sub woofer.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for your review.

Did you notice much use of the overhead Atmos speakers? Did the rain sounds come from the roof ? What was the lobby shoot out scene like?
Saving Private Ryan UHD is an example where the rain was broken in the audio mix. Just hoping Matrix did it right.
