Cornel West commentary... Is this on the BD or UHD? I'm interested in this but don't have a UHD player (and my main TV is 1080).

I received my pre-ordered copy last evening from Amazon. I know what movie I am going to be watching this Friday evening! Bring on the popcorn and liquid refreshments for the third Friday in a row (SPR, Gladiator and now Matrix)!

This before SPR. The SPR blu-ray was already excellent 5/5 (if you have it already) while the Matrix had serious issues.

7.1 but no Atmos?

Regards,
I watched it last night on my OLED 65 C6P and the Oppo 203. I could not get it to do Atmos via a Pioneer SC-85. The English settings available in the menu were Atmos and 5.1 yet the Oppo showed what I was listening to was 7.1 which isn't available via the menu.

Comments? I'm missing something here.

Greetings,

The Oppo info screen won't show Atmos but, only TrueHD 7.1. What did the display on your Pioneer show during playback of the 7.1 TrueHD signal?

I watched this last night when. my copy arrived. I don't have a reference display unfortunately, as my 55" Sony x930D presents a lot of clouding and this movie is chock full of dark scenes with bright lights. Despite this annoyance, the movie looks fantastic, the colors and the textures are fantastic and the sound was good. One day I will have an OLED and be able to truly appreciate this UHD HDR disc in its entirety.

Just received the UHD Blu-Ray this afternoon from Amazon. All I got to say impressive video especially the HDR and the audio LFE kicked and impressive surround. The only oddity I experienced was when I selected the Dolby Atmos track in the disc menu my receiver Denon AVR-X4400H displayed Dolby True HD when the movie started I had to manually select Dolby Atmos from the Movie (Button) on remote. This is the first time I had to manually select the decoding to ATMOS.

Thanks Ralph Potts you nailed it with this review, and it was so worth the triple dip. I do not do many flicks during the week, but after seeing PioManiac posted that screen shot of Trinity, I found myself watching the tracker in Amazon.......waiting to leave work to get home to enjoy. Did not let me down. The use of Atmos seemed to be just right, as I have TM speakers, that were pretty active thru the movie, literally just after that screen shot, the glass breaking and the cement truck into the booth/building were pinging my TM's. Now where are the other 2 releases?

The Atmos has worked fine which is why I'm perplexed. I watched "Fury" last night and it was in Atmos and displayed as such, no issues.

It did show "7.1" on the Oppo info button as Fury was playing and it also showed "7.1" while Matrix was playing. As Ralph pointed out, the Oppo will show 7.1 for Atmos but, again, the SC-85 only displayed "Dolby Surround" during the Matrix. Also, the little speaker icons to the left of the word display, in this case "Dolby Surround", did not show the speaker configuration as it will for 5.1 or stereo sound. I presume I was listening to "real" 7.1 during the Matrix. Unless there is obvious sound from the overhead speakers, it's tough to tell if tehre was sound coming from them but i don't think there was.

Quick question, not terribly important but I guess I have to ask - any decent bass in the fight scenes? Like in the Neo/Morpheus spar and Neo/Smith showdown at the train station? Do the punches/kicks have any heft? Because I recently watched the old Bluray and the punches/impacts had little ... er, impact. Funnily enough, the old DVD of the Matrix had more impressive bass!

This bears repeating. Even if you stop playback and use the disc resume it will still default back to 5.1 DD. WTF are you thinking WB?

Anyway, this is my new reference disc for both video and audio.

Yeah I resumed playback today and it defaulted to DD 5.1 and for some reason the volume just seemed much lower then then Dolby Atmos. I had the volume set to -3 db on my Denon AVR-X4400H. At least the only kudos Warner gets is still including the ATMOS on the Blu-Ray disc.

Watched the BD last night. I've used the previous BD to sanity check calibrations after measuring so I'm pretty familiar with it. The remaster is quite different; brighter, more detail in general, more colorful, and also a tad more detail right after black. The black level remains fine though. Just like the previous release it's good for checking the black level on a display: the tie of the police sergeant who agent Smith talks to a couple of minutes in should be visible but only barely.

At least on my setup the UHD version doesn't convert from HDR to SDR well. Blacks are crushed regardless of setting on the conversion "slider" on my Sony X800. 1080p display owners will probably want to stick to the regular BD version unless they have a more magical converter than I do. This is obviously a bit of a lottery. For example, the remastered Blade Runner converts fine (fortunately) as far as I can tell.

This remastered The Matrix looks great and it really is like seeing the movie for the first time again. However, I question which version is closer to the original theatrical release. If my memory serves me right - and visual memory usually doesn't - it looked more like the previous release when I saw it in the cinema way too many years ago.

The Atmos soundtrack kicks a whole lot of behind. But yeah, as others have pointed out, make sure that's what you're getting.

A great release!

Well damn, not rushing out on Tuesday to pick it up at launch, I went to my local Best Buy today to knock this out over the holiday weekend but sadly they didn't have it.

So who wants to come over and watch my $12 Memorial Day sale consolation movie selection of Battleship instead?

Great review Ralph!

The new audio mix is spectacular. Again, it becomes demo worthy.
The video is quite good, and don’t think that it will look better unless they re-shoot the movie. However, it is not as good as other movies.

I got my delivery from Amazon yesterday and flipped the disc into my player figuring that I would sample a few scenes. As soon as the opening scene with Carrie Ann Moss came up, I was done for and watched the entire movie. It really holds up on repeat viewings. I watched it at night with my living room lights off. The Dolby Vision version looked very, very good and in the completely dark room the image really stood out. Colors were consistent with the way that the film was shot and they were well saturated. The green tinge that was present on the original Blu-rays was considerably toned down. There were some pinkish skin tones on the agents in a scene in the office building but they didn't bother me. I saw little if any black crush and could see a solid amount of detail on the dark outfits, even in dark scenes. This transfer is made for OLEDs. There certainly was grain but after a while it was not intrusive at all. The Atmos sound track was everything that you could ask for. All in all, this is an excellent 4k release.

You guys are absolutely killing me with these amazing Atmos reviews, as that seems to be my biggest weakness in re-buying all these older movies. But maybe it's fate I haven't found a copy yet as I have a new sub being delivered on Tuesday, so hopefully I'll be able to experience this in all its glory shortly after.

I like the first Matrix movie, so I thought I'd bop into Best Buy and pickup a copy. $35....uh, no thanks. I'll shop elsewhere or wait.

Picked up "Fury" yesterday and "Lone Survivor" today on UHD for $20. Good movies, good price.

+1

Was going to break down and buy this after all the glowing reports until I went to Amazon and saw the price. I'll wait.... $30+ for a catalog title especially is insane.

C'mon @Toe ! Take the red pill and fall further down the rabbit hole. What a great 4K release. Ralph Potts is spot on with this, and the Atmos is awesome! I do like those movies as well @ Jive Turkey. After screenshots by PioManiac, I am sure that I will end up with the 4K of Fury! Plus the screen shot of Trinity from PioManiac sold me on this flick here.

I won't be too far behind you hopefully, but I need a better deal before I jump in. My backlog of movies and music to check out in the HT right now is insane anyway so I'm not in a rush thankfully.

Ralph,
Thanks for the review. I remember how big a deal this was on DVD when I first put together my first home theater in 1999. I watched the UHD BD over the weekend and was like seeing it for the first time. Great blacks, fantastic detail, and nice overall color rendition this time as well. The rain etc coming from the ceiling and wides really added another layer of enjoyment.

I do agree that bright whites were clipping but in the less than real world settings where I saw it, it didn't distract.

Anyway , anyone who has enjoyed this film will certainly be pleased with this IMO.
