Mandy Blu-ray Review

Mandy is set in the primal wilderness of 1983 where Red Miller, a broken and haunted man hunts an unhinged religious sect who slaughtered the love of his life.

"You're just meat. Without a soul, without a brain, without anything."

My Take:

From what I had heard of Mandy, it is being heralded as a new cult classic-- a new grindhouse midnight movie if you will. I figured if Nicholas Cage goes full-on crazy Cage, and the pedigree of writer/director Panos Cosmatos (Son of George P. Cosmatos - Cobra, Rambo 2, Tombstone) pans out, Mandy should be a lot of fun.

Set in 1983, Cage plays Red, a lumberjack living with his girlfriend Mandy. They live simply, staying in a...you guessed it, cabin in the woods. Mandy catches the attention of a cult leader, who summons a Demon-Biker gang (who are obviously inspired by Hellraisers Cenobites) to kidnap her. This sends Red on a blood-soaked, insanity-filled rampage of revenge as he tries to get back the love of his life.

Mandy received a 92% Rotten Tomatoes and favorable reviews everywhere, making me wonder what movie I saw. Some of the dialogue was so terrible I wondered if it was intentional, yet it took itself seriously. Some of the acting was stand-out bad and the overly trippy soaked vibe seemed too forced. Yes, it did have some cool parts, namely one of the best soundtracks I have heard recently by the late Jóhann Jóhannsson (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and The Theory of Everything). The film had some really cool Heavy Metal/Fantasy novel imagery, cool set pieces with smokey saturated colors and Nick Cage was a less cliched cage ins actually gave a cool performance here. I found the experience a bit overly self-indulgent and felt it would have been much more effective if it had a bit of help in the editing room. Cutting away 30 minutes of the over 2-hour run-time might have made all the difference for me - I found my focus wandering more often than I would like. I say its worth a watch, but check your expectations and you just might enjoy it more than I did.

Replay Value:

Parental Guide:

Mandy contains violence, gore, nudity, profanity, and drug use.

Mandy comes to Blu-ray Disc from Image Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 channel sound.

Filmed digitally, the image is sharp and well defined. Colors are stylistically used to conjure the fantasy novels that Mandy loves to read. The primaries are overly saturated, and at times the image is soaked in neon. Flesh-tones seem to stay naturally warm and the color design fits the vibe of the film well. Mostly set in the dark, I had no issues with shadow details and seeing the action in these dark/nighttime scenes, however, there were times where black crushed or did seem a wee bit grey. I enjoyed the sometimes smokey and trippy atmosphere, my only criticism would be some occasional visible compression noise. This is a nit-pick in a generally first-rate video presentation.

The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is aggressive as the film, with palpable surround activity, in-your-face-dynamics, and a synth/guitar soaked pseudo-metal soundtrack. As bonkers as the film is, the soundtrack is a perfect companion. There were a few moments where the mix fell noticeably flat and I did long for a little more LFE activity, but again, that was more of a nit-pick. Is it perfect, no...but it was fun as hell!

Bonus Features:
  • HD: Behind The Scenes
  • HD: Deleted & Extended Scenes

Final Thoughts:

Mandy is a specific flick for a specific crowd. I can see some loathing it, some loving it, and many like me, feeling pretty indifferent. I found it long-winded and a bit too forced, yet it had some great ideas and was weird enough to rise above some of its faults. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission and the Blu-ray is a great way to experience Mandy if you are so inclined.

I've watched Mandy three times now. It's great that interesting movies like it are still being made and that we don't have to settle for templatized Marvel dreck. Anyone seeking a bit of a trip should check it out.

Good review, matches a lot of my impressions. Sound track was great. Video quality was mixed, as I had also noticed black/contrast being sometimes inconsistent. On the topic of color, all the use of red light is an area where I think this style of movie could benefit from the wide color gamut of a UHD release so that it really comes through as blood red rather than the more orangish red we get with 709. Yes, the movie definitely could have benefited from better editing, and for all the time spent building up the first act I think the second act should have committed and gone further into deep end. Instead it felt a bit too restrained, more pulpy than truly trippy. The acting was actually surprisingly good across the board except the scene with Bill Duke whose delivery and lines just didn't work. That scene should have been cut. It didn't feel like the right way to explain the bikers. Regardless, I am happy that there are movies out there willing to try different things and visually there were some very evocative sequences to be appreciated.

The director stated in an interview (https://www.rogerebert.com/interview...entine-mandy):

"I am trying to create pop culture artifacts and not just straight-up thinking of story and wanting to tell that in an effective way. The story is played simple, and I like the idea of a very simple storyline and then building a universe around that."

I think that helps explain some of why the story was lacking. I get what he is attempting to do, but even if you are trying to construct a movie that does not focus on story, that doesn't mean you can simply leave in a poorly constructed story. It should be simple, but not stand out as such. Since it did not disappear into the background I think he fell short in that regard.
