Alien is Coming to Ultra HD Blu-ray

The Scariest Movie Ever Made Celebrates its 40th Anniversary When

Alien

Arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on April 23rd, 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 26, 2019) –– In space no one can hear you scream. The terrifying sci-fi adventure, ALIEN, celebrates 40 years with an all-new 4K Ultra HD™ master, available April 23. A limited edition 4K UHD™ steelbook of ALIEN 40th Anniversary Edition will also be available exclusively at Best Buy.

In the film that birthed the wildly successful ALIEN franchise, the crew of the deep space tug Nostromo awaken from stasis during a voyage home to Earth when their ship’s computer detects what is believed to be an alien distress signal coming from the desolate nearby moon, LV-426. While investigating, one of the crew, Kane (John Hurt), is attacked by an alien creature that latches to his face and he is rushed back to the Nostromo to receive medical treatment. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the ship’s warrant officer, advises against Kane’s return due to quarantine regulations - but her orders are ignored by Ash (Ian Holm), bringing the Nostromo under threat from a mysterious, extraterrestrial apex predator with violent and lethal survival instincts.

The film was restored in 4K in 2018 by 20th Century Fox at Company 3/Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, supervised by Ridley Scott and Pam Dery, with the 4K scans were done at EFilm.

How on Earth can they NOT remix the soundtrack in Atmos??

This is not a good sign for getting the most suitable film ever with an Atmos mix - Aliens.

Arrrgghh, Atmos should be obligatory on UHD! So irritating just upgrading the picture and not the sound, when such a upgraded sound format exists. Major bummer.....

Sometimes ATMOS is not suitable for an older film, remixing sometimes is hoky...colorization, turning mono into 5.1 sound...the list begins. This film is close 40 years old, it may not need sonic dancing monkey tricks. What we should hope for is the best picture and sound quality we can get out of the film. ATMOS is not a value added option, it's a tool that should be used with restraint.

Problem arises as Aliens may have to signed off on by James Cameron if/when a 4k transfer is done, he's a bit behind in his movie transfer approvals. The third and fourth movie may have not generated enough interest to warrant 4k transfers.
Don't get me wrong, I'd buy a 4K box set of the four films. I think you'll see a 4k Aliens at some point.

I did some quick research of the Alien movie. I'd like to share this interesting link with you.:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_(film)
You will be asked: "Did you mean: Alien (film)?"
Place your cursor underneath Alien (film) and left click it.
Thanks

As a matter of fact I used the original 2.0 track (of the Blu-ray) to test the Dolby Upmixer in my first Dolby Atmos AV receiver in 2015 and liked it better than the IMHO pimped 5.1 remastered track.

However, the original soundtrack isn't really something to write home about, its shortcomings become rather obvious during the first crew briefing scene and suggests that the source recordings themselves are in a rather bad state, i.e. I'm not aware whether there is technology that somehow could improve the original recordings.

The film was released in Dolby Stereo, so we did have the original Dolby Stereo Matrix with three separate front channels (L, C, R) and one mono-channel for both surrounds which is what Dolby Surround Pro Logic extracted from the 2.0 signal.

In this regard the upcoming UHD Blu-ray constitutes perhaps some improvement, i.e. it seems that the Center and Surround information is no longer encoded in the 2.0 track but for the first time both channels are available as discrete channels!

(4.1 = L, C, R, mono surround + isolated LFE channel)

I guess that's all the improvement we can possibly expect - and the upmixer in your AV receiver now probably has 4 discrete channels you can upmix.

We went in and we completely de-noised and de-grained it, up-rezzed it, color-corrected it end to end every frame. And it looks amazing. It looks better than it looked in theaters originally, because it was shot on a high-speed negative that was a new negative that didn’t pan out too well and got replaced the following year. So it was pretty grainy. We got rid of all the grain. It’s sharper and clearer and more beautiful than it’s ever looked. And we did that to the long version, to the “director’s cut” or the extended play. I call it the “FM Mix.” That’s dating myself!
If I have to sit through another red push vs teal push or DNR thread about Aliens, I'm just gonna take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. Between Cameron's alleged involvement in the Aliens LaserDisc, the controversy surrounding the Aliens Blu-ray, and his DECADES of awful T2 transfers that I have sadly purchased (including the most recent 4K smearfest disc), I have very little interest in his approval of a new transfer of Aliens, the DPs should make that call for all his movies.

As it happens, my Alien disc is missing from my Blu-ray anthology box set, so I need a replacement. At least Ridley knows how to properly release a home video, even if he can't remember whether his own characters are actually androids or not. And yes - Gladiator Blu-ray was effed up - but the 4K disc is a thing of beauty. Recent examples include Blade Runner 4K, The Martian 4K, Exodus 4K, Robin Hood 4K, Prometheus 4K, Alien Covenant 4K, and the aforementioned Gladiator 4K. Alien 4K and Black Hawk Down 4K will likely be phenomenal as well.

I'd also like to get a 4K remaster of Alien 3 - both the theatrical cut and special/director/assembly cut. I don't feel like the Anthology Blu-ray got a fair chance to shine, but maybe the issues are from the source. Was Alien Resurrection a 2K DI? I probably wouldn't expect much from it beyond a significant boost to color/contrast with HDR.

Some of the red push or teal push is due to people's equipment also....but we won't go there. If people really want video perfection take a look at 'Altered Carbon' on Netflix. But after a point perfection takes the film out of film. When these threads go crazy then it's time to go something else for awhile, perhaps a few episodes of 'Forged In Fire' are in order.

As it's been said in audio circles, what you get is only as good as the master tapes.
