"Those Who Can't Earn A Living Must Find Another Way To Provide"

Synopsis:

“Two police detectives (Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn) find themselves suspended after a video of their strong-arm tactics is leaked to the media. In another part of town, a felon (Tory Kittles) is released from prison and discovers that his family is about to be evicted. With little money and no options, all three men descend into the criminal underworld, where danger awaits them in the shadows.” – Lionsgate Home Entertainment

My Take:

I generally tend to enjoy film noir, especially if it involves character driven narratives. Dragged Across Concrete is a dark drama that centers around a group of characters faced with dilemmas that require them to set aside moral questions in the hopes of bettering, more or less, dire circumstances. The risk is high but, the reward is higher, that is, IF everything goes according to plan.

Set in a fictional city Dragged Across Concrete is a well-crafted and taut crime drama that uses contemporary themes, home spun social commentary and straight up storytelling, all set to a slow burn that is compellingly rich in context and wonderfully executed. I honestly can’t say much more other than this is a must see for those that enjoy an edgy, atmospheric drama that revolves around desperate men that are defined by a sense of purpose. Be warned that this can be a violent and graphic film that some viewers may not find easy to watch. Don’t be fooled by what is seemingly a cast of has been actors whose heyday are well behind them, there’s some great work here. I was pleasantly surprised by Dragged Across Concrete and commend writer/director S. Craig Zahler and his cast on a job well done.

Replay Value:

Parental Guide:

The rating is for strong violence, grisly images, language, and some sexuality/nudity.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:

Dragged Across Concrete comes to Blu-ray Disc from Lionsgate Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound.

This is a stylized high definition video presentation that utilizes a muted level of chroma that works toward conveying the theme and locations depicted in the story. When present colors are rendered cleanly with natural looking texture and delineation. The photography doesn’t lend the video to glossy, eye catching definition however images are detailed and sharp which provides appreciable depth and dimension. Close ups reveal lucid subtle nuance that allows the pores, stubble, peach fuzzy hair and subtle skin variation among the cast to be distinguishable. This also applies to the surface structure of objects and clothing within the frame. Black levels and contrast are spot on with estimable detail visible within dark backgrounds and shadows.

The DTS-HD MA soundtrack did a nice job rendering the elements present in recording. Dialogue was well articulated with clear tonal distinction. Dynamic range was good although it was rarely tested by the film’s elements. Low frequency detail wasn’t frequently applied however when present in active sequences it sounded full bodied and robust. Rear channel activity was limited to a few discrete effects and ambient surround sound that bridged the front and rear sound stages. This film relies more on dialogue and front sound field presence than it does on filling the room with sound effects and ultra-deep bass. I thought it worked well toward that end and sounded good.

Bonus Features:
  • Elements of a Crime: 3-Part Documentary
  • Moral Conflict: Creating Cinema that Challenges - Featurette
  • DVD
  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

From the mind of writer/director S. Craig Zahler Dragged Across Concrete is engagingly atmospheric, tightly spun and genuinely rewarding via its conceptually dark aesthetic that works on nearly every level. It comes to Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment featuring gratifying high definition picture and sound mated with a fair supplemental package that offers insights from the cast/crew. Dragged Across Concrete is highly recommended viewing that deserves a place near the top of your Blu-ray rental queue.

Man, this guy is pumping out the movies! I still haven't seen Cell Block 99!! (simply because I had been saving it to watch with a particular group of friends but that still hasn't happened yet)

I absolutely loved Bone Tomahawk and it sounds like all of his movies have been just as good.

I REALLY want to see this. Mel Gibson is gold in just about everything he does, even his newer low budget stuff.

Thanks for the review as always Ralph. I must admit I'd never even heard of this film - completely off my radar. I had previously been put off by the idea of Vince Vaughan in a non-comedic role, but watching Brawl in Cell Block 99 has put paid to that lol, so I'll definitely be checking this one out.

This is one raw, badass film. It's a bit of a slow start for the first 30 min, but by the 2nd half it picks up pace pretty significantly. Others have mentioned Cell Block 99, which was also very good. I grew up on films like this as a kid in the 80s, so it's right up my alley.

Great review, Ralph!

Too slow for me, not sure if the 2nd half really "took off" because I shut it down after the bank violence. The Vince Vaughn eating for over a minute was a complete waste of film. I think they just tried to use naked women to get better ratings as well.

R rated movie and "anchovies" is what you say when you are mad? I thought an entire other movie started when they did the backstory on the woman who worked in the bank leaving her child. Ok....we need a reason to feel something towards someone inside the bank...So make her pretty and throw in the fact she has a new born, guess it works?

Also, very smart to park a car under a street light when doing survielence? Best was pulling out of the gravel lot over a grass ditch and then creaming the concrete median a few feet behind the car you are tailing...thats subtle!

I needed a movie with a little bit more thought behind the writing...or maybe Jason Statham shouldve done this one and I would call it ok.

I rented this from Netflix. Man, is this movie slow but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the bass in this especially during gunfire.

I agree with these comments, and thought the pace could be quicker with just a little editing, but overall still enjoyed the movie. Not sure if it would be a repeat watch for me only because it tended to drag here and there.
