Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Poll

Let Your Voice Be Heard In The

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Poll

Starting today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is giving AVS Forum members the opportunity to vote for their favorites on 4K Ultra HD! The Studio has compiled a list of “modern classics” from their extensive library and would like our input on those that we would like to see on 4K Ultra HD disc in a special gift set, coming in 2020.

Secondly, we will then be able to vote for up to three other selections from a broader list of catalog titles that the studio will consider for release on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the future. Lastly, there is an option for members to offer their choice for a film from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that isn’t among those listed that they would like to buy on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

My choices are in! Visit the below link to vote for your favorites. Don’t miss out, make your voice heard and vote by June 30th. Feel free to reply in this thread with your picks and the reason you chose them.

I put The Karate Kid Part II for the title I typed in. I voted for A League of Their Own for the first question, and Starman, Annie and Rudy for the second question. I like movies with in-depth and/or feel-good plots.

I wrote in Dances With Wolves.

Edit: Nevermind. I did a search on IMDB for top 100 Sony Pictures movies, and it was in that list. But everywhere else I search, it says Orion Pictures and MGM, not Sony, so I have no idea how IMDB is getting this one in their search.

The list of movies that Sony has which haven't already been released in 4K is weak...

Jerry Maguire (since I had to pick one, but none really excited me)

Das Boot, Mask of Zorro, A Few Good Men (but honestly I'd only consider Das Boot, again the rest of the list was meh)

Gone With the Wind (write in). This is the only one I actually would buy, not because I love it but it's the #1 attended/viewed in theaters movie of all time so I feel compelled to own it.

Denon X4300H; Sony XBR75 900E; Definitive Technology RLS-II/DI 5.5LCR/DI 5.5R; NHT SW12

A Few Good Men came out on 4K UHD a couple years back (25th Anniversary Edition), with a pretty nice Atmos mix.

Same here: Das Boot was the only one I wanted from that list.

The only movie I can think of, that's on the following list, I'd buy in 4K is Lawrence of Arabia. I wold buy that right away, but the rest I either don't know or just not going to make the cut. The other movies I liked are Snatch and Whiplash. I would have picked The Longest Yard if it was the original.

I don't know if this is all of Sony's movies or not, but I pulled it from movie insider.

I picked A League of Their Own for the first question because its a great movie, then because I love love love The Other Guys, I selected it - aim for the bushes! That would be incredible. I also selected Last Action Hero and Big Fish because they're just fun mindless films which I wouldnt mind seeing in 4k!

I would like to see some of the older Columbia Pictures movies that Sony owns. My write in choice for 4K release was Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Current system:
Sony 75X900e/Sony HT-NT5 sound bar with SR-5 rear speakers
Sony X800 4K blu-ray player/Dish Hopper3
Roku 4 Premier/'Sony PS-4

Anyone who votes for Last Action Hero needs to go to jail. Both Arnold and his housemaid have disavowed that movie.

Not excited about anything in the 1st section so voted for A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN because, why not.

LAST ACTION HERO - my kid likes it and I'm a big Arnold fan
BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON - I fell in love with Vanity when this movie came out and it'd be awesome to see her in 4K
STRIPES - John Candy, Bill Murray

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES - underrated movie, IMO. There's already a 4K mastered release but I'm assuming any new release would also include HDR

My main choice was Big Fish, even though I've never seen it. I've read good things about how nice it looks.

A League of Their Own

Then Silverado, Starman and Looper

Blue Thunder for my write-in

I'm surprised more didn't vote for Silverado. I think it would make an excellent HDR and Atmos presentation!

Unfortunately for us Canadians, Sony has begun not releasing catalog 4K titles here for some reason. The Karate Kid and The Natural are 2 of the latest

It's seems obvious (to me) that Sony is determined to reserve 4K Lawrence of Arabia for streaming (Apple?)

To call some of these "modern classics" is amusing, like Zathura...please And a title like Rudy was a great feel-good, inspiring drama but I don't need to buy it again on 4K or to get Atmos.

For the record, I have a number of these titles already on BD & even DVD (Jerry Maguire) & aren't persuaded to buy them again just for 4K/Atmos.

The only titles that could entice me are Das Boot, Passage to India, Remains of the Day, possibly Awakenings although the BD is again just fine. Someone mentioned they added Blue Thunder - that would be an interesting choice, might be interested in that

Without Lawrence of Arabia, Sony's list is underwhelming me for 4K double or triple-dips. If Warner Brothers gave us 2001, A Space Odyssey in a gorgeous 4K release, Sony should cough up LoA.

This is probably the one studio that doesn't need such a survey. Sony was first out with getting all the best catalog titles to 4k. Now if there was a survey for Disney (who now owns half of all movies just about since buying Fox), then the list could get interesting.

100% concur, Sanjay. I really stretched for the other 2 that I mentioned in my post and they'd have to be seriously discounted.

Repeat - without Lawrence of Arabia, Sony isn't enticing me to upgrade from BD's I already own.

That's another one I'd take (seen it over 30 times on the big screen, mostly after the 1989 restoration, couple times after the recent 4K restoration).

Why do they need so much personal information for a poll?

Started to fill it out until i got to the personal information.

Greetings,

I didn't find the request for name, DOB, gender and e-mail address to be intrusive. I suspect that this basic information is designed to assist with determining a demographic.

Marketing & targeted marketing. See which titles correspond to age & gender. If only older buyers want an older classic like a Gone With the Wind or Lawrence of Arabia and those titles don't show up with many 20-30 yr olds and the company wants to target 20-30 yr olds, then the chances of getting that older title are reduced. Or if females would buy more romantic dramas vs action/scifi, then they know to release some in those genres to increase sales to that gender.

Insidious how innocent-looking polls can be used and easy to see why social media companies like Facebook continue to abuse personal data even after being called before Congress. They sell the data, Sony uses the poll results to target movie releases to specific age groups & gender. They will know which titles have the most appeal & profitability for those groups that will spend the money for a disc vs one-time streaming. The data can be sliced & diced in multiple ways depending on the intentions.

You don't think they put out that poll solely because they want our opinion, did you?

Usually I don't do any online surveys & polls for this reason. But in this case, I agree with Ralph Potts, it wasn't too intrusive, and most likely used to match choices to demographics. As long as you realize what the specific questions can be used for when you hit Submit, you can make informed decision to participate or not

Otherwise, it may only get streamed. I read a few months ago that Sony has done a 4K version of Lawrence but only intends to release it on a streaming platform, I think it was Apple. So if folks really want to see it on UHD, better use this poll to ask for it.

Kinda surprised with how much of their catalog they've already knocked out. Some good movies left, but not much left that I really care for as far as UHD potential goes. Looper already had some good bass so maybe the Atmos would add to the soundfield, and Drive is one of my favs that I would buy blind anyway. District 9 was a surprise they hadn't done yet, but most of the rest I like are basic dramas that I doubt I'd need to upgrade.
