Godzilla: King of the Monsters is Coming to Blu-ray

Long Live the King As

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Arrives onto 4K Ultra UHD, Blu-ray, Combo Pack, DVD Special Edition on August 27th, 2019 from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment

Own it Early on Digital Beginning on August 13th

Burbank, CA, July 16 – Experience the epic monstrous action as legendary Titans collide when “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” arrives on 4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD Special Edition and Digital. Directed by Michael Dougherty (“Krampus,” “Trick 'r Treat,” “Superman Returns”), the film stars Kyle Chandler (“Catch-22,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” TV’s “Friday Night Lights”), Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films, TV’s “Bates Motel”) and Millie Bobby Brown (TV’s “Stranger Things”) in her feature film debut.

From Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Toho Co. Ltd. and Huahua Media, the film’s acclaimed ensemble cast also includes Bradley Whitford (“Get Out,” “The Post”), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water,” “Blue Jasmine”), Charles Dance ( TV’s “Game of Thrones,” “The Imitation Game”), Thomas Middleditch (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” TV’s “Silicon Valley”), Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Next Three Days”), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton,” “Long Shot”), Oscar nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Godzilla”), Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception,” “Godzilla”) and Golden Globe nominee Ziyi Zhang (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).

Dougherty directed from a script he wrote with Zach Shields, story by Max Borenstein, Dougherty and Shields, based on the characters “Godzilla,” “King Ghidorah,” “Mothra” and “Rodan” owned and created by Toho Co., Ltd. The film was produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Brian Rogers, with Shields, Barry Waldman, Hiro Matsuoka, Keiji Ota, Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers, and Ali Mendes and Jay Ashenfelter co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team included director of photography Lawrence Sher (the “Hangover” films, “Godzilla”), production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”), editors Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films), Oscar nominee Richard Pearson (“United 93,” “Kong: Skull Island”) and Bob Ducsay (“Godzilla,” “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi”), costume designer Louise Mingenbach (the “X-Men” films, the “Hangover” films) and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Life of Pi,” “Godzilla”). Music is by Bear McCreary (TV’s “The Walking Dead,” “10 Cloverfield Lane”).

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will feature Dolby VisionTM HDR, which dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range, and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen, frame by frame. It will also feature HDR10+TM, a new HDR technology that optimizes brightness levels and contrast for each scene.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will also feature a Dolby Atmos® soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar. Dolby Atmos soundtracks are also fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will also be available on Movies Anywhere. Using the free Movies Anywhere app and website, consumers can access all their eligible movies by connecting their Movies Anywhere account with their participating digital retailer accounts.

Fans can also own “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” via purchase from digital retailers beginning August 13th.

SYNOPSIS

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed Ghidorah. This will be my next blind buy. Have watched the first one multiple times! Hoping for a potent LFE track down to at least 20hz or so.

Saw this right at the beginning of June in the theater. Loved it. Great popcorn flick.

Any word on if the 2014 Godzilla is getting a 4k treatment? I haven't been able to find any info at all, but If I understand correctly, GKOTM is part 2 of a trilogy. Maybe there will be a 4k box set after the 3rd is made.

A lot of mindless action from beginning to end - should make for a wonderful home demo disc

In terms of half-decent story-telling and compelling characters, I much prefer Godzilla (2014) and Kong.

Yeah boi!

TIme for a 70's style WXYZ DEE-troit Monster Week!

(WXYZ ABC 7 in Detroit would do a Japanese monster film (plus random American/British flix like the Blob, etc) fest week, airing Godzilla, Gamera and similar flix around 4pm weekday afternoon at least once a year for us skool kiddies)

EVERY kid would be talking about 'zilla (and his son!), Mothra, and Gamera at school the next day

Shaweet times
http://www.dvddrive-in.com/TV%20Guide/430movielogo.htm

Quote:
Of all the genre weeks that THE 4:30 MOVIE broadcast, NONE were as highly anticipated each year as the Japanese "Monster Week" flicks. These films would guarantee that my homework would be done by 4:30 and that my entire collection of Aurora monster models (Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, The Phantom of the Opera, King Kong, The Mummy and Godzilla) would be scattered on the living room floor along with Matchbox cars and little H.O. scale buildings (which would serve quite well as "little" Tokyo). Scenes of mass destruction on the television set would be mimicked by me right in my own living room with my model Frankenstein battling my model Godzilla (who was an ideal substitute for Baragon) when FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD was broadcast.

"Monster Week" goes as far back as June 1971 in which a whole spectacular week devoted to...GODZILLA VS. THE THING (Monday), REPTILICUS (Tuesday), WAR OF THE MONSTERS (Wednesday), THE X FROM OUTER SPACE (Thursday) and MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET (Friday). WOW!!!! What a show, but this was only the beginning!!!! Starting in January, 1974, Channel 7 would broadcast a "Monster Week" at least once a year right through July, 1981. Some of these weeks consisted of...

GODZILLA VS. THE THING (Tuesday)

Monster flicks are ALL ABOUT the mindless action!

Breathing radioactive fire and stomping on people, cars, trains and smashing buildings with wonton abandon makes for a nostalgic flick.
(though nice to have some scifi-ish technobabble and sensible plot and maybe character drama thrown in)

In that vein, 'zilla fans should check out the recent Rampage Dwayne Johnson flick- I took it as a homage to Japanese monster flicks.

The Meg was also a suprisingly good scifi monster flick-esque update to Jaws.

Rent it first - if you do not like it then it's just a rental.
If you like it enough to buy it, you've already seen it and can wait for prices to come down...

Thank you for another great review, Ralph. I just ordered it from Amazon in 3D. I noticed that of late, Amazon carries a lot of recent movies in 3D. Perhaps this means that Amazon, as well as the studios, have come to the realization that there is still a market for 3D in the USA. The television manufacturers made a significant mistake when they stopped making 3D televisions. I won't buy 4k for that reason alone. Too bad the manufactures are so myopic. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing this one.

it's on digital now and has a very good Atmos mix, but the story however.... I agree Kong and Godzilla [2014] were much better.

long live the king..

I watched this last night Vudu UHD +ATMOS - it was awesome!!... so many LOL moments with the 18"s shaking the house. The ATMOS mix was a blast.. very nice!!

I thought the overall UHD PQ was excellent - looking forward to seeing it again when the UHD + 3D discs land.

In honor of KOTM's arrival I have his theater poster in the light box outside the theater this week
