Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Arrives in June

The Ultimate 4K Collection for the Ultimate Fan

Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection

Six Iconic Films from the Acclaimed Columbia Pictures Library Debut on 4K Ultra HD™ For the First Time June 16th 2020

MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON ~ LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB ~ GANDHI ~ A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN ~ JERRY MAGUIRE

Exclusively Available on 4K Disc in this Limited-Edition Set, Includes an 80-Page Hardbound Book on the History & Impact of the Films and Over 30 Hours of New and Archival Special Features

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is proud to debut six of the most acclaimed and beloved films from its library on 4K Ultra HD disc for the first time ever, exclusively within the COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION, available June 16. This must-own set includes iconic favorites that span the studio’s history: MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB, GANDHI, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and JERRY MAGUIRE. Each film is fully restored in 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range.

Additionally, this set of fan favorites wouldn’t be complete without the fans themselves making their voices heard! In a recent Sony Pictures Home Entertainment poll, consumers were asked which modern classics they wanted to see included in a 4K gift set. More than 30,000 responses were received, and A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and JERRY MAGUIRE were the #1 and #2 winners, respectively, ensuring their inclusion within this collection.

The six films in the COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION are only available on 4K Ultra HD disc within this special collector’s set with a limited-edition run of fewer than 8,000 units in the U.S. Included with the collection is a gorgeous hardbound 80-page book, featuring in-depth sections about the making of each film within the set via an all-new essay written by acclaimed film historian Julie Kirgo.

In addition, the set also includes an exclusive disc featuring excerpts from Columbia Pictures’ televised 50th anniversary special, which originally aired in 1975 and has never been officially available. These excerpts feature rare on-camera insights from such luminaries as Frank Capra, Phil Silvers and Orson Welles. This exclusive disc also includes the vintage behind-the-scenes documentary “Mr. Attenborough and Mr. Gandhi,” which was filmed on the set of GANDHI and features interviews with cast and crew.

Peter Sellers portrays a trio of men who attempt to avert this catastrophe: British Captain Lionel Mandrake, the only person with access to paranoid Gen. Nice. Hope the set is (relatively) cheap.

Mr. Smith and Dr. Strangelove are both black and white. I hope they won't be colorized. (The others were in color.)

Bizarre set.

Classic movies means something different to me than "A league of their own".

I might have to get the set for Lawrence of Arabia alone. As I have been hinting over the years, it is my favorite movie of all time and one of the "classics" that really deserves a 4K treatment.

The Bluray looked great already. This 4K must be breathtaking.

Cheers

yeah it's inevitable that we find these box sets wanting one way or another as what titles should be included. Kramer VS Kramer, Tootsie, A Few Good Men, Midnight Express, those are just few from the top of my head.

Greetings,

A Few Good Men is already out on Ultra HD Blu-ray.

A Few Good Men Ultra HD Blu-ray Spotlight

As for the selections, these were chosen from a fan poll that garnered 30,000 responses. Not exactly certain how they arrived at the initial pool of choices. I am good with most of them though.

Regards,
Thanks for the heads up on AFGM.
As for the box set choices now that you mention it, I thought there was an open online link invitation to vote and the pool wasn't all that large indeed. Well compared to this list.

Unfortunate packaging. I want boxes that fit on the shelf with all my other movies, not something that needs a special place of its own - and while the book is awesome, I'd be perfectly happy sticking it on the other shelf where the books go. The pictures make it look like maybe the individual movies are in actual, viable standalone cases, but maybe the packaging is just made to look that way. If they are individual cases, I'm probably in for a set and I'll just chuck the box. And if not, well, that sucks, but I guess there's no crying in Blu-Ray collecting...

I assume this won't be an issue, I haven't seen studios colorizing movies for a long time.

A League of Their Own and Jerry Maguire were the two fan selections. I feel like they should have made an entire set for classics and an entire set for fan votes. Like you said, those two movies are way different than the other three. Oddly enough, I voted those two movies into the set, but I don't care to own the other 3.

At $115 for six movies it comes to <$20 per movie. That is about par for older movies re-mastered and released in 4K.

At that price the book is thrown in for free.

I think A League of Their Own is an unequivocal classic, though it admittedly doesn't have the rock-solid critic consensus held by the other titles.

At that price the book is thrown in for free.
Compared to the other big sets that have come out..Mission Impossible, Batman, and The Christopher Nolan Collection the price for this set seems fair. If we knew Sony wasn't going to offer the titles individually I could see having the set for LOA and Ghandi at least. We could be coming to the end of the line of boxed sets as studios empty out the vaults.

It is. It's just strange to put it in this set vs. putting it with more modern classics.

I can only speak for myself, but I like that this set offers variety of era. One from the '30s, two from the '60s, one from the '80s and two from the '90s is a nice mix.

$19.17 per movie, rounded off to the penny, if I can still do arithmetic in my head.

I hope that the films are well restored.

Book? Does anyone read anymore?

Why paper books and the independent bookstore aren't dead

Turns out all those dire predictions were wrong.

I did, right now the price is as low as I think it will be for sometime. Releases June 16th. The longer we're cooped up the better the set is looking.

That was mostly a joke, albeit not very funny.

However, adding reading materials generally isn't a big selling point for me for movies or movie collections.

I hope that they eventually get around to releasing Lawrence of Arabia as a standalone 4K UHD movie. That one I will buy. The others I will rent.
