1. Insulation in the soffits?

Insulation in every concealed cavity adjacent to the theater to tame resonances. This includes risers, ceilings, soffits, etc. Stage should be filled with sand.

Welcome to this side of the forum SOWK.

Insulation in soffits? Yes, you don't want any empty cavities to act as a drum if you could help it. You may want to consider as others have done, to leave the bottom of the soffit open and finish it with fabric so it can act as a bass trap. The thing is if you are planning to do something like that or are concerned about sound isolation you may want to drywall the room first then build your soffits.

Good luck.

Oman & Big, thank you for the input.

Oman321, The contractor has already started the soffits... so I will filling with cable tubing / insulation and will have to go external for the bass traps. That would have been a great plan though.

Or is there a way to still do this even if the drywall is not up yet?

Also new question added.

If sound isolation is not a concern then yes, you can stuff with insulation and cover the bottom with fabric. If your going the whole double drywall and green glue route then I would say no as it would totally defeat your sound proofing efforts.

As far as subs are concerned, a simple test is to place the sub at the seating position and then going around the room on hands & knees finding the position where the sub sounds/feels the best. Tuff to do in an unfinished room but you can probably get a fair analysis when everything is framed out and insulation is in place and before drywall goes up.

Having said that, I simply had one place where my sub would fit and that was dead center below the screen. With bass trapings at the corners of the screen wall it has worked out well.

At a minimum I would move the subs foward from the corners to the false wall, and use the corners for OC bass traps.

Just checked your video out SOWK, pretty cool. Nice open space you have to work with there. What are the rooms dimensions? How many seats are you able to get in there?

How deep is your false wall? Looks extremely deep?

Good to see a build thread.
You should definitely talk to Wayne for advice.

This is going to be an audiophile room as well.

Not just home theater.

Need good distance from side and front wall for best imaging and soundstage.

Supercool videos online. I was getting into the song. Great way to show progress!

UNICRON-WMD 05-10-2011 06:38 AM

Very nice man. Cool videos. I really wish I had more space in my basement for a bigger theater. I was only able to fit 14x19 room.

Also, only 5 seats? I am positive you can fit 3 seats on the riser and 4 seats in front.

This is more a Personal/Family Theater. Plus I am already over budget.

I know you're all going to be super jealous of my new screen...

Nothing but the highest quality here!

Image testing:

Included in the last picture is 2 of my friends for screen size comparison. Both are ~ 6' in height.

That temp screen sure looks familar - kind of amazing how good a picture you can get with a sheet or cheap fabric or wall. But I'm glad I graduated to a real screen a few days ago!

Edit: I like the screen progression in the first couple posts, good idea (i.e. I will have to steal it).

HuskerOmaha 07-12-2011 08:10 PM

Wow. You have a ton of room behind the screen. That will make things easy.

In other news, I lost out on my bid to buy Wisconsin season tickets this am.
