Alright, finally made the thread. So, as I've been browsing and reading through many of the forums, in particular the entire thread of "The reference list of bass movies", there are several, several, scenes and little moments of LFE bliss that many people would love to have all on one disc. Or maybe not, but oh well.

So, I have started to compile all of the many scenes that folks have said represent the ultimate in low-freq and bring inadvertent smiles across the room when played/felt. So here's the list of scenes that will be included as of right now:

I'd love to see this come to fruition.

Jindrak 05-31-2012 09:27 AM

Oh, it most definitely will. If no one can help provide scenes, then I will need to buy the rest of the movies, which I priced on Amazon to be around $300. Although, hopefully I might be able to find some of them at the library/redbox.

But what would also be a big help is with the titles that have ***'s next to them, I need people to suggest scene's from those particular movies. I wouldn't want to pick them myself only for someone later on down the road to say "Oh, but I wish this scene had been included" after the disc has already been made.

I wouldnt worry too much about that cause there will always be someone. I have pretty much every movie you have on there but have no clue how to clip scenes otherwise I would help out. I have DVDfab so if you have instructions on how to do so let me know and I can see what I can do however I would have no clue how to get them to you either.

Jindrak 05-31-2012 04:12 PM

Sent you a pm

New scene:

Live Free or Die Hard (The apartment shootout)
Star Wars 2 DVD (The opening scene)

scubasteve2365 05-31-2012 06:00 PM

If you mix DVD and bluray content you will run into issues. At the very least if the disc authors most projectors and display devices are going to have to handshake again which often takes a second or two, which doesn't sound like a big deal but when bouncing from menu to clip and back to menu it will prove to be undesirable. You can maybe reencode the DVD video to 1920x1080 at 23.976 fps to solve this but I don't know the impact on mixing it back with the audio. Another consideration will be the framerate of all your clips. You ideally want them the same.

Lastly how you are you authoring this? Leo and I used Scenarist, which isn't very accessible.

Jindrak 05-31-2012 08:10 PM

I will be using multiAVCHD. On some BD's, they have both HD special features and SD and I haven't run into any problems with playback from them. The only reason I include the 3 DVD scenes is because for Titan AE, there is no Blu-Ray and for The Haunting, everyone raves for the DTS track.

But, those 3 could also just have their own little section on the disc. And how in the world do you 2 have the cash to get something like scenarist when it's not even for your job??

But, I suppose those crucial scenes could be cut.

HD/SD can be mixed, not sure if multiAVCHD will handle that though. Even then I don't think you can make "sections" like Leo and I had on our disc. MultiAVCHD doesn't have the ability to do full menu authoring. It's great for what it is, a tool, coded by one guy.

Scenarist is pretty much what you want. Even if you can get access to it the learning curve is pretty steep. You need to have and be familiar with photoshop as well. Going this route be prepared to dump a couple hundred hours into this project from clip collection to authoring to testing.

Jindrak 05-31-2012 09:40 PM

I already have PhotoShop and am familiar with it. However, I cannot use Scenarist, as I simply cannot drop $5000 + just to one-time author a blu-ray. However, I am quite sure I can make something very nice to everyone without it If the DVD scenes do not work out, then they don't work out. I'll make 2 versions for me to test.

I can, however, use something like Adobe Encore or Sony's DVD Architect (Which can do Blu-Ray Authoring) if that helps.

Encore and Architect won't handle the lossless audio tracks. Your choices are multiAVCHD, Sonic Scenarist, Sony's BluPrint ( also very expensive like Scenarist) and one more expensive piece (cheaper than BluPrint and scenarist though) of software. That piece has a 30 day evaluation, in the event that you have the time to throw at this and wrap your project up that fast. I'll try to dig up the name.

I'm just trying to help you see what you're getting into. Strangely bluray authoring isn't as accessible as DVD authoring if you want to retain lossless audio. Encore and some the other consumer level packages would be perfect for this project (and mine) if the lossless was handled. Unfortunately they weren't so that meant that I was forced to use a professional studio grade suite. Maybe things have changed since I last looked into and a consumer grade package now handles lossless.

Dostudio and Bluprunt have free trial periods.

And I believe Nero, whatever the current version is, can handled HD audio too, but is limited to templates when it comes to menus.

Also besides an authoring program you will need some different audio and video tools, things tend to get out of wack sometimes when the streams are clipped.

scubasteve2365 06-01-2012 06:26 AM

Thanks Leo, DoStudio was the name that escaped me.

trek737 06-01-2012 12:19 PM

Private Ryan ( Opening attack on the beaches of Omaha)

Master and the Commander ( When his ship is under attack)

Rango ( When he crosses the road in the beginning of the movie and the last action scene at the end of the movie... It may not be all bass but it is sounds incredible)

Just a few ideas if you wanted some extra material....

Good luck,
Jim

lt99 06-01-2012 12:30 PM

Another one:
The Art of Flight (The first song – Alaska)

The Dolby TrueHD 7.1 is insane on this track, the visual is also spectacular.

superleo 06-11-2012 08:41 AM

Anything happening here?

Just watched Super 8. I haven't check at the subs threads, but I'm sure some one must have the waterfall graphs for the train wreck scene. Very impressive!!!

Jindrak 06-14-2012 09:26 PM

Yep, stuff is happening. Slow going, but trucking along. Added a few scenes where none were suggested. Removed Cloverfield from the list of "Scenes Needed", as there are already 2 scenes and that is plenty for Clover.

I might take The Incredibles off, as I haven't heard much from other people about scenes that stand out in this movie, just overall good bass.

Jindrak 07-16-2012 01:54 PM

Updated. Several scenes have been collected, but still have a long ways to go.

NewHTbuyer 07-16-2012 02:42 PM

Great idea.

A new movie that has impressed many: Underworld Awakening. The first appearance of the giant Lycan and later the scene when the elevator drops on Selene.

coolcat4843 07-25-2012 02:37 PM

I picked up the DTS Blu-Ray Demo Disc 2008 edition, at the Consumer Electronics Show
in Las Vegas, several years ago.

The folks at DTS were passing them out at there booth.
Never pass up freebies!

It has the best quality lossless audio that I have ever experienced on BD, with bass
so deep and powerful, that it will rattle the gold fillings in your teeth. smile.gif

I don't understand why Dolby and DTS don't sell there demo disc to the general public.
They would make a killing!

Jindrak 07-27-2012 02:56 PM

Another scene added:

The Matrix Revolutions - Burly Brawl

Jindrak 08-13-2012 10:55 PM

Ubergoober update. To start, here's the scenes I've added/gotten:

The Last Airbender - Water Wall
War of the Worlds (Lightning Strikes, Military Fighting Back, Plane Crash in Basement)
The Incredible Hulk (Sonic Cannons)
Battle: LA (Heli ride to Santa Monica, Final Battle)
Hellboy 2 (Elemental Battle)
Transformers (Base Attack at Beginning, Ironhide Jump)
Dark Knight (Lau's Extraction, Hospital Explosion, Bank Robbery)
Live Free or Die Hard (Apartment Shootout, F35 Attack)
Iron Man (Cave Escape)
Jurassic Park (T-rex Appears)
Tron Legacy (Disc Wars, Entering the Grid, Plane Battle)
The Hurt Locker (The beginning bomb Explosion)
Immortals (Tidal Wave, Mountain Destruction)
Batman: Under the Red Hood (First Five Minutes)
Toy Story 2 (Intro Scene)
Scott Pilgrim (The Twins Battle)
Iron Man 2 (Intro Scene, Creating a new element)
Resident Evil: Afterlife (Tokyo Purge)
Star Trek (Drilling Platform Fight, Narada emerges from the black hole)

Now, I have a problem. To many scenes frown.gif Right now, the folder is sitting at 51.4 GB, which is to much for a Dual Layer Blu-Ray, and I still don't have the Pulse - Server Room or Open Range - Showdown or the Thor - 1st Warp and Thor - Warp Tower Collapses scenes. So, I need some help in deciding which scenes to keep and which one's to throw out. I've already decided to not include the Super 8 - Train Wreck sequence and The Pacific - Iwo Jima battle. I've updated the 1st post so that it doesn't look as ugly/messy. Hopefully some of you guys'll chime in, otherwise I'll have to decide on my own which ones to keep, and I don't want to discard good ones frown.gif Right now, I'm thinking about getting rid of the HTTYD - Super Dragon scene, as it's over 2GB in size and most people have probably seen it and/or have the movie. The other one is Pearl Harbor - Surprise Attack, as that one is about 2.55GB in size. If both of those went out, then the total size would be around 46.85GB, which would be enough to get (I think) the Pulse and Open Range scenes. I'd really like to have those 2, as they are rather excellent ones that do a good job of showing off. But, after that, I should be good to go and could start immediate work on getting the menu's up and running.

superleo 08-14-2012 07:17 AM

Great job.

I would maybe just use 1 clip from Dark Knight , 1 clip from Transformers and 1 clip from Iron man 2. That might give you enough space to add the clips you really want included in the ULTIMATE disc.

Jindrak 08-14-2012 11:58 AM

I had also checked out

The Day After Tomorrow - Helicopters Freeze & New York gets Flooded
Wall-E
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

But they didn't have anything that was truly noteworthy. Good bass in Transformers, but not a whole lot below 25Hz for any reasonable amount of time. I'd also have liked to get Redline in here, but that would take up to much space. The Haunting DTS dvd is also out, as are Star Wars Episode 1 - Pod Race and Star Wars Episode 2 - Beginning Shot. After I get Pulse and Open Range scenes, I'll see if there's still room for Titan AE - Ice Nebula. I decided to get rid of Pearl Harbor. The 2 Iron Man scenes are both below 500MB each, so I believe they are just to small to get rid of.

Poo, if only there was such a thing as 60GB Blu Ray discs.

Edit: Book of Eli - Street Shootout is gone. Not good enough. Total folder is now at 48.8GB

48.8 is probably too big. You gotta do the 1000 versus 1024 conversion. A kB according to windows is 1024 bytes but according to disc manufacturers it's 1000 bytes.

Jindrak 08-14-2012 04:32 PM

I know a few more gig's need to be lost., I was just stating the current size of the folder. Hard to let some of these go.

Jindrak 09-04-2012 08:30 AM

All scenes have been collected, and I'm currently in the process of making a menu. That's really all that's left is menu creation and then making a test disc. smile.gif

What software have you decided to use? Did you not make a simple test disc already? You should have made one that has three or four clips on it so that you know your clip trimming process and resulting clips are fully compliant. Even then youll probably still have clips that fail to mux that will have to be, for a lack of a better word, repaired.

Talking about sort of makes me want to make another one. Home Theater Demo Disc v3(d)... Hmmnnn

hellajon 09-05-2012 11:53 AM

You're doing gods work.. I applaud you.

enderland 09-05-2012 02:42 PM

Definitely excited for this!

Even though I don't have the most awesome sub setup compared to most of you lot it would be awesome to have something like this regardless biggrin.gif

ki11abee 09-05-2012 06:31 PM

Like i did for scubasteves discs, if i can paypal you for a done blu ray, let me know. Dont have the time to download and burn this. Thanks!
And I hope someone puts the Kill Bill Bride fight scene vs the gang one day on their disc.....

Jindrak 09-05-2012 06:50 PM

Oh, now we got some excitement going on smile.gif

Scuba - I did make a test disc just on my computer, both an image (.iso) file and a complete bdmv folder setup and tested it with PowerDVD just to make sure all the scenes functioned the way I wanted to. Still haven't completed the menu yet, but will also test that out on the comp before burning to the dual layer blu-ray. (I'll be using a BD-RE that way I can erase and burn again in case of things I want to change.) The first software I had tried out was called EasyBD. It included an "easybd menu" app, which was lame, and a more full featured menu creation tool called "IG Editor", which was better, but lacked a way to link the different pages and menu options together and to the clips. So after I get back from vacation, I'll be using DoStudio. Hopefully that will work, otherwise the only other option will be a trial run with Sony BluPrint or hoping that either you or superleo could make the menu for me. But hopefully DoStudio should hit the spot, as it seems to be a more full featured program than EasyBD.

One thing I've always wondered was why these studio/software makers make menu creation such a hassle. I've made dozens of DVD menu's with DVDLab Pro, and it was very intuitive and simple to use. And yet all these other offerings for Blu-Ray are rather overly complicated (so far from what I've seen). Of course, the other thing is that full featured Blu-Ray creation is still a little bit in its infancy.

k1llabee - Hmm, never heard anyone suggest Kill Bill for sub scenes. I'll have to check that out. I'm also thinking about making a "Volume 2" for the Bass Disc, since there are still so many more Bass scenes out there.

scubasteve2365 09-06-2012 05:53 AM

I disagree, I don't think BD authoring is in its infancy. Its far more capable than DVD authoring. The issue is two fold.

1) there isn't much in regards to consumer level template menu offering
2) BD authoring split with BDMV and java being very different

The menu creation is very, very hard, because it's very tedious. You have to manually build everything. Leo and I could not do it for you, as it is dependent on the authoring software used and we used Scenarist. With Scenarist, and hopefully the other professional grade suites, you actually create the menu in photoshop. You don't just create the look of the menu, but rather you do the full animated states of each button and organize them into layers. A script is then installed in photoshop that will export the resulting file into something that scenarist interprets. All the while you have to be regulating buffer size. It's simply just a ton of not fun tedious work, but it's rewarding when done to see the menu operate when you manually created and developed each little piece. In fact when users tell me they ripped the clips and play it back without using the menu I cringe a little, has a little bit of a "my brand new car just got dinged by a shopping cart" kind of feel to it.

Hunker in, you've got a ton of work to do. Of course I could be wrong and do studio might have an easy button but something tells me it won't.

superleo 09-06-2012 07:37 AM

Dostudio's menu creation is pretty similar to Scenarist. You create the menu in Photoshop and then import the layers with a tool (Moseiac). There are several tutorials for menu creation for Dostudio.

Most of your work now would be in Photoshop.

Like Steve, I believe that the coolest thing about these discs is the menus. Not only because is hard work to create them, but because is what actually makes the discs shine, being able to use popup-menus to navigate the disc and have everything available right there and there is the soul of these creations. Having the demo clips is one part of the whole deal, but If you haven't actually use the discs with menus you are actually missing out.

I'm sure The Ultimate Bass disc will have "kick ass" navigation too. Looking forward to it.

Jindrak 09-06-2012 12:34 PM

Scuba - That's what I meant, but I guess it didn't come out that way.

Hopefully this thing should actually go by fast, because when I was using the IGEditor, I already went ahead and made all the buttons in PS and I already have the background image as well. Really all that needs to happen is a way to link the buttons with the proper remote commands (up, down, left, right, enter) and then link each title to the corresponding video. It's a rather simple menu. I'll have to see how the pop-up menu stuff works, because I'm not sure how I'll fit that in.

Dingaling2004 10-15-2012 02:44 AM

This is gonna be awesome. Looking forward to it. I think another important thing to come out of this is realising how much work has gone into the previous demo discs by scuba and super Leo. I constantly go back to these discs for demo with friends. Your selfless efforts are truly appreciated. Thank you.

One of my clients is an editor at Bad Robot and I was going to pay him to make me a similar demo disk. However, since you've already picked most of what I planned to use myself, I think it's easier for me to simply (eagerly) wait for yours! wink.gif

michelevit 10-16-2012 05:58 PM

Rebuilding my theater and incorporating a infinite baffle subwoofer. Looking forward to your demo disc.

fleixius 10-18-2012 01:11 AM

Any timeline for completion? I'm getting ready for carpet and would love to check this out!

You know that there are already two really good blurays out there already right? One by me and another by superleo. No need to wait. Ours aren't subwoofer specific but they do have subwoofer categories.

Great advice! Last week I downloaded both and copied yours to a thumb drive for viewing via my Oppo. It works great! I just ordered a 128GB thumb drive so I can copy both of them to one device and then leave them plugged in all the time.

Which begs the question, has anyone considered making a 120+ GBsampler that includes ALL of the clips in question? Then, for those of us who have devices that can read from media other than Blu-rays (thumb drives, hard drives), the total amount of demo material available could be tripled (almost)!

Hi Scubasteve, how would I go about securing a copy ofyour Demo disc?

Read the thread. smile.gif

https://www.avsforum.com/t/1283375/home-theater-demo-disc-version-2-0

I'd read the first page or two, and then start working my way from newest to oldest, as a lot changed over the course of the run, but I don't know how current the earliest posts have been kept. They'll still have important info, though. Then the newest posts should help point you to the most-current (still valid) information.

Jindrak 12-08-2012 08:44 AM

Sorry for not updating this thread. RL got in the way of things for a while, but I should hopefully be making some more headway on this soon.

Thanks, this set me on the path and I enjoyed Scuba's disc today!

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing/hearing Jindrak's ultimate disc when it gets completed.

Just happened on this thread... hope this is still in the works. Sounds like it will be an awesome demo disk!

eek.gif Well, you could re-encode the video on the clips to make them smaller.

I know I'll have people chasing me with pitchforks and torches for saying this, but the video on most blu-ray discs are encoded at unnecessarily high bitrates. If done correctly you can easily shave bits with no visible loss in quality. Taking it a step further you can actually improve the visual quality by using motion compensated noise reduction before recompressing to reduce grain and artifacts. Of course it is more work and not a trivial process.

Slingblayde 02-17-2013 11:22 PM

This is a definite d/l for me, I love the demo discs Scuba and Leo made. Can I suggest a scene also (even though I havent seen it yet) The shuttle launch from the IMAX Hubble bluray. People on the forum have said it is killer.

Jindrak 02-27-2013 11:54 AM

Ladies and Gentleman, after such a long time, through countless battles, it is finally here. I've finally completed Volume 1 of the Ultimate Bass Demo Disc.. Now, the menu is not great shakes to look at, the only thing available to me to use was multiAVCHD, but I'm happy with how it turned out. There were many errors the program gave me that I had to systematically hunt down and fix, including re-ripping certain scenes. But, it is now here, and I am very happy with what I've made.

The only feasible way to download this monster, like the other demo discs here, is by torrent. I'll try and seed it as constantly as I can so that other's can get it downloaded and seeded.
The only thing you will probably notice with the demo disc is that for the LotR - Gandalf vs. Balrog scene, I edited together the first part of the scene from Fellowship of the Ring so that you get the whole beginning of the Balrog scene, and merged it with the continuation scene from The Two Towers. There's a slight audio "change" sound that you will be able to hear, but that's just the scene changing from the Fellowship to the Two Towers version. I couldn't make the scene transition any smoother, because none of the video editing programs out there (Premiere, Vegas, etc) can edit and output HD audio. But, I don't think it detracts from the scene to much.

I have also already started work on Volume 2 of the Ultimate Bass Demo Disc, now that I've made this one and know what to look out for, it just go by much more smoothly. More info on Volume 2 will be put out shortly.

vikgrao 02-27-2013 12:21 PM

Congrats Jindrak Thanks for the amazing disc and the effort you put into this. Does this disc have the Open Range shootout scene?
Regards
Vik

airscapes 02-27-2013 12:24 PM

how do we download it and what's is needed to burn it to disk?

nickbuol 02-27-2013 01:17 PM

Download some Torrent software (I used uTorrent, google it, it is free like many others).

Download the .torrent file using the link a couple of posts before yours.

Wait for it to download (it will speed up as more people get it downloaded and share).

Burning it will be a little more complex and I will have to see the file structure in the .Torrent to know how to guide you, and the download link is blocked at work. Maybe someone else can chime in.

superleo 02-27-2013 01:41 PM

Congratulation on your disc!!!

Currently downloading, it'll take awhile but looking forward to it.

Jindrak, may be you can tell us if the file is a compress file or directly from the BDMV folder structure?

Jindrak 02-27-2013 04:40 PM

The file is not compressed. Once downloaded, you will have the BDMV folder, ready to burn. Just use any software you want. A good free one is Imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com/). Here's a picture of the folder you are downloading and whats inside:

You can ignore everything except the BDMV folder, as those are just extra's left over from the creation of the disc. And yes, this does have the Open Range shootout scene. (Over 10 minutes of it too, I might add)

Pictures of the menu:

neutro 02-27-2013 07:26 PM

Thanks! Downloading at a nice speed but it will take a while indeed. I'll try to seed for a little while afterwards.

Jindrak 02-27-2013 08:24 PM

If everyone could bear with me, I've got some good news. I just rented a seedbox (1 GBps) so that everyone can download this thing MUCH faster. I'm going to stop my seeding for right now so that the seedbox can get setup. Everyone should be able to instantly max out their connection speed with this smile.gif

If you know about seed boxes then I'm sure you can stumble upon Scenarist for your next disc.

Thanks! I'll be seeding it during the week after downloaded. wink.gif

Rob Greer 02-28-2013 11:27 AM

Jindrak - Did you remove the link to the .torrent file / link from your post in preparation for the sharing via Seedbox? I can't locate it. frown.gif

Jindrak 02-28-2013 01:20 PM

Yes, I removed the link. A new torrent file will have to be created once I finish transferring the files via FTP to the seedbox. Should be about another day and a half. But, all will be well and ya'll be able to download much faster than my puny 200 - 350 KB upload speeds as before smile.gif

nickbuol 02-28-2013 02:36 PM

I was actually getting decent speed and it looks like everyone is stalled out at 9.4%. I guess that there is no reason to keep sharing if the torrent is going to change.

Approx. 34 hours left until upload completes. It should be done some time around 6:30 AM this Saturday morning.

neutro 02-28-2013 06:45 PM

Now all of that downoad will appear on my March data transfer total mad.gif I had planned on splitting the download half and half on February and March biggrin.gif

I know it's way too late for that but I was wondering if it woud be feasible to make a demo with heavily degraded video quality but the same soundtrack. This would either enable a much smaller image, or to pack a much larger quantity of scenes. After all, the goal is mainly to experiment the audio.

I thought about a seedbox too, but it came down to this. It was always going to take the same amount of time to do an initial upload or to transfer to the seedbox. I bet you'll find that this doesn't get the movie out there any quicker this week but those that come onto the torrent a month from now will get it somewhat faster. Just knowledge for your next disc so that you're not having to pump money into the distribution.

neutro 03-02-2013 08:10 AM

Is the new torrent available yet?

Just a few minutes guys.....

Update: Everything was transferred via FTP fine. A few problems creating the actual torrent file, but those have hopefully been sorted out now.

Had to spend all day working with their tech support.

Still have 1 thing left to get out.

Ok, re-making the torrent file (again). I know you guys must be frustrated. If this doesn't work, I'll just go back to seeding from my crappy connection. The new-new link will be up in a little bit.

You can't believe how frustrated I am man, talk about crappy service here rolleyes.gif

Seriously, I'll take it when it's ready biggrin.gif Anyway, the download will likely be a long affair anyway, and it will be a while before I can explore your demo disc fully. Thanks *a lot* for all your efforts, I really look forward to it.

art West-VL. 03-03-2013 12:44 AM

Thank! biggrin.gif
I downloaded for 10 minutes now at an average of 121kB/s
It seems that it will take a week to download, but the rate changes sometimes, so it can be two weeks or 4 days.

Thanks again, worth the wait and worth the week download!

One quetion, are these the same files posted earlier? If so, then I can stop the download because I have the other five DVD-9 torrents downloaded.

Jindrak 03-03-2013 09:48 AM

Not sure what you mean. I haven't uploaded any DVD-9's, and almost none of these scene's have been uploaded before. Before I left for work this morning, saw the upload rate at 2.1 MB/s. I'll try and see if it can't go faster. The download speed for everyone is dependent on what your ISP allows for you.

Is everyone else getting good speeds?

Helheim 03-03-2013 10:20 AM

I was getting 300-400 kB/s on the old one but this one only 130 kB/s I have a 100 mB/s connection.

landshark1 03-03-2013 10:38 AM

I've got very good download speed, around 700kB~1MB (FIOS). It's about 70% downloaded already since last night. It said another 6-7hrs to go, can't wait to check it out!

Btw, have you created any poster/cover artwork for the disc? Or do you have your background pic or something that you can upload so we can made it out own?

I'll be seeding it during the weekdays after finished too. wink.gif

Thanks again!
