Terry,

Man, those photos sure do bring back some great memories.
We really have had some kick-a$$ times, both with our home theater hobby and with all our shenanigans with cars.

How the time does fly by as we have both sold at least two cars each and are both awaiting delivery of new ones. And, both of us have done serious upgrades to our home theaters you, Mr. Showboat, of course going all out on what is now really a showcase place.

Hey buddy, more good times are definitely ahead for both of us.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,

I thought you might enjoy a trip back in time with those pictures.

And yes we both do have 2019 Audi RS3's coming in maybe end of May or June.

As you say Good-Times we have and still are having.

I have to be in Manchester, TN on Monday by 7:15AM for a big work meeting. It probably goes without saying, but there's no way to get there from Charlotte by plane that morning, forcing my hand to fly on Sunday. I happened to see Terry was in Franklin so after we connected I scheduled an earlier flight to allow some "hang out" time before shuffling off to my hotel for the night.

I agree with everybody's opinion that your theater is *FAR* from basic! Not even close!! And to be clear, I never walk into these things with any kind of expectations or critical ear. I'm there primarily because my job affords me little opportunities every now and then to meet a fellow AVS-er in-person and basically 'nerd out' as my wife calls it. With that said, I look forward to meeting you and your wife and 'nerding out' on Sunday!

And if you're up for a full movie I'd love to see Bladerunner 2049. Looks to be a great flick and I've heard it has stellar sound.

I don’t mean to hype it up too much, but for me 2049 was probably my favorite cinematic experience in a decade.

Hey brother Tim,

I can assure you that in my case the Home Theater is not gathering dust buddy from Non use Pal.

I can spend as much time messing around watching whatever your little heart desires Pal.

I'll go ahead and Pre-Load 2049 and Fire-Up the RS4500 Laser unit so all will be ready to simply Touch the Start-Button.

Oh, Tim, you can later say anything you wish or say nothing at all if that's your preference on seeing & hearing my H/T.
I'm soon to be 74 years old so believe me I much-much prefer Blunt-Honesty over a Snow-Job !!!

Looking forward to your arrival on Sunday.

Gotcha covered buddy,

Terry: My guess is that Tim will find the audio and video in your theater quite excellent. And he is the kind of visitor you want because he is such a gentlemen, I can't imagine he would ever say anything that was not positive.

Enjoy !!

Hey Chuck,

Just received a text from Tim his flight was early so he is right now picking up his rental.
He's going to text me when he's actually headed this way which is going to be real soon now.

He also has brought with him a selection of DEMO 4K Disc for us both to check-out on the H/T system.

I think this is going to be a really-really FUN afternoon and early evening.

Who knows Chuck, Tim might like what he sees and hears buddy.

We will also be having Dinner at The Chop House maybe 15-minutes from my house in Franklin.

Guys,

Well my AVS H/T buddy from Charlotte, NC came by and checked out the H/T today.
We then went to the Chop House for dinner which was excellent as always.
Hung-out at the Chop House chatting and Tim left around 9 PM or so heading to Murfreesboro, TN. to his hotel.
He has to get up early for a business meeting in the morning in Manchester, TN.

I'm not going to post what Tim thought of the H/T and will leave that all up to him.
He may or may not elect to post anything.

I'm 100% sure he did enjoy his visit though and his dinner at the Chop House.

Hi Terry,

Hey, I'm glad to hear that you and Tim had a grand old time in your home theater followed up by an excellent meal in the Chop House.

Thanks for the phone call so that I had a chance to have a short chat with Tim. He is a very interesting and knowledgeable fellow so it must have been not only a fun day watching movies and demos but also a very informative one as he really knows deeply the A/V world.

Take care and enjoy your new 4K disc, compliments of Tim.

Cheers,

Hi Tom,

Your 100% correct he definitely knows his way around the H/T thing for sure.

I also now thanks to meeting him in person as well as texting and phone calls have a lot more (Useful) information on ATMOS.

Definitely enjoyed the movie. I also appreciated the long, slow camera "push shots" which gave you time to suck in the cinematic images. Also never heard of Ana de Armas before this movie...shockingly beautiful woman.

Terry - Long overdue but thank you for your hospitality last week. I really enjoyed the movie and "nerding out". Your system sounded terrific! I'm still nominating you for a "biggest liar on AVS" award for saying you had a "basic" system as nothing could be further from the truth! The only 'ding' I would give you for your system is the lack of a programmable remote control like a Logitech Harmony Elite or similar. No doubt you are a master of all the different remotes but I don't think you realize how life-changing introducing a programmable remote would be.

Although I brought a gift, I'm afraid I won't get an invite back after eating you out of house and home of all the cashews and Baked Lays I wolfed down...not to mention the thousands you are now looking at spending for an Atmos upgrade! It was one expensive visit to have me come by!

Agreed. I spent a week with a heartache after watching this movie. Stunning woman - and a soft accent like hers gets me every time...

Hey Tim,

2049 is a Bad-Ass ACTION-PACKED-MOVIE for a fact.
And I think we had the H/T system turned-up to where we both totally 100% enjoyed it for the Video & Audio.
Also your right we were two guys doing the thing that's for sure. LOL !!!

Logitech Harmony Elite or similar remote control devises.
I'm totally out buddy.
Just not me my Good-Man and believe me Wolf Hill Technologies (Charles & Jason) have BEAT-Up on me about that.
I simply prefer to pick-up the correct single remote for each individual device and going that route.
It works and it works 100% of the time .........

And as you said after us further discussing Atmos I'm all in on adding that.
Hopefully before year-end for that addition.
All I really need now since I have made my Final-Decisions on the components/gear is the $$$$$$$$$$$$$
That I am now actually looking forward to !!!

Oh, before I forget with my poor excuse of Short-Term-Memory.
I have Restocked the Snack area as well as the small refrigerator so when you are in the area just give me a SHOUT so we can once again get together.
If I am running LOW on refreshments Publix is like maybe 5-minutes away buddy.

Hi Tim,

It was nice having a short chat with you during your visit to Terry's.
I would love to have been a part of that "nerd" session.

It's good to get your feedback about Terry's Home Theater as my last vissit was about 4 years ago before he made the latest upgrades.

I want to visit again but now that he is enthusiastically convinced to do ATMOS I may have to wait until that's done to enjoy the H/T at its best.

Don't worry about digging deep into his snack bar. Terry loves to feed his guests with whatever their A/V hearts desire.

Over the years we have paled around with Hot Cars and Expensive Home Theaters. Terry has given me lots of good advice, particularly when it comes to spending more money to get the best equipment:

- "Hey, Tom, go with the bigger Rotel amp, not a direct-to-customer one."

- "Tom, buddy, get the 85-inch Sony 4K HDR flatscreen, not the 75-inch."

- "Friend, you need a second JL Audio f113 Fathom v.2, 3000-watt, 120-pound subwoofer in gloss black."

- "San Antonio friend, you need Chad B to calibrate both your flatscreen and sound system."

The good news is that I'm thrilled with the results now that the H/T is a full-blown, delicious 7.2.4 system.

Tim, I've been stunned with the video quality of Terry's JVC laser projector based on screen shots Terry has sent to me. Any comments you have about that based on all the gear you have seen over the years would be interesting.

Good luck with the completion of your H/T which looks to be one outstanding project.

Cheers,
Tom

I've seen a ton of projectors in-person, including all the latest from everyone at last year's CEDIA. Certainly no way to fairly compare completely separate demo room impressions, but I did have some favorites. In the unlimited budget category there is a clear choice with Digital Projection Inc's native 8K laser projector. Full stop. Nothing else was even close...but for $400,000 it shouldn't be close to anything else.

Barco makes some fantastic units as well, although they are still a bit spendy. For the upper crust of residential projectors that JVC 4K laser is a true performer. Awesome image and brighter than you'd ever want it with room to spare - even for HDR. I also like the "set it and forget it" calibration convenience of laser, without question. But in terms of more mainstream projectors I really like JVC's NX-5/NX-7/NX-9 series with particular preference for the NX-9 which uses the same optics as JVC's reference laser but has auto tone mapping and 8K upscaling - all of which looked absolutely fantastic.

For the rest I'm sure there are plenty of reviews about the JVC and Sony projectors in the $7000-$10000 range which make every reviewer seemingly split hairs when comparing on screen performance between the two brands.

Tim,

Thank you for your reply.
If I ever move from the flatscreen world to projectors it is nice to have some rough guidelines about manufacturers and price ranges.

It would appear that Terry is justifiably in Home Theater Heaven.

^^ Hard to argue. The latest “shootout” between several JVCs and Sony’s bears out your conclusions. And then you can have combinations of products. For example, take the RS2000, add a Lumagen and a Panamorph (forget MSRP) and you are at the ~MSRP of the RS3000 but with extra brightness and some other benefits as well. And not to be left out of the mix is who does the calibration? Lots of great choices,

In my particular case, knowing what I now know, I would still stick with my substantially discounted RS4500 + Lumagen + Panamorph. Based upon my age, limitations on screen size, screen gain, throw distance and usage ( or even usage doubled or tripled), this projector will easily outlive me. And I have yet to see an image on any projector (that costs less than the price of a luxury car or upper middle class home) that gives me even the slightest desire to change.

That said, if I were 30 years younger and could still afford the RS4500, I would never consider it. I also would not buy the RS3000. I would buy the RS2000 + Lumagen + Panamorph. The Lumagen + Panamorph could move along as projectors got faster/better/cheaper/brighter/smarter - and they most certainly will. And the rate of improvement in projectors is astonishing. Again, at 30 years younger than I am today, I would never buy top of the line. In fact, until the purchase of the 4500, I have always bought 1 or 2 down from the top.

The great news: There are choices for everyone - and spectacular choices at that !!!!

I did the rs2000 with paladin lens (no lumagen, but I plan to get a MadVR Envy when they come out). Although I could point out flaws, I honestly couldn't see ever needing more. More money spent would, in my opinion, only correct extremely minor issues and make improvements that are so small it would be difficult to justify especially considering the very high cost. Laser light source makes good sense, and if I ever upgrade, this would be the reason. Of course all this is relative and very subjective.

I know @p3bham and a number of others have an addiction to Stonewater pics and sadly I've imposed an unexpected and unwelcome "intervention", forcing everyone to go "cold turkey" by not being as fastidious in my posting as I have in the past. Today marks the third day I've been home during the past 7 weeks. Fortunately I have a well-deserved travel break and can get back to important matters like reigniting your progress picture addictions in the coming days. As noted before, I have a ton of progress I haven't yet posted and my goal is to get caught up by this Sunday morning.

I've gone all the way through the detox phase over the last couple weeks as I've been at the beach house. But now I'm ready to dive back into full blown addiction. Bring on the updates!

Roll Tide.
