I think one of the Hobbit movies was also filmed higher than normal. It was making people dizzy in the theater. It was 48fps. Billy Lynn was 120fps. On disk Billy Lynn will be 60fps. Again. I think. Even in 3D.

If your current cable is working, stick with it! I’m shocked though—I ran my HDMI cables at least 2 years after yours were run (3 of them), and they are 100% obsolete. Can’t pass the full 4k signal. I ran Cat6 as well in case those cables became obsolete, but I expected 4K UHD baluns to be 100% stable right now (I don’t think they are, but I haven’t looked in quite some time. Emotiva has something that looks useful.

Matt, as I have read the RUIPRO HDMI cable only does 10bit color depth. If you have it setup to 12bit color, do you think it would handle that high a frame rate as well? Any comparison to the ones sold by Momoprice that are certified as 18Gb?

I just received and installed the (Blue Jeans Cable) BJC Series-3A Active HDMI Cable (directional), 35 foot and allows viewing of Billy Lynn. Cost me $59.25 with shipping.

An instrument for the G2G....its going DOWN this weekend!

For the millenials out there who just dont know, this is a digital SPL meter. An absolute must for calibration.

Btw, @DougUSMC that first demo session you had last year (Force Awakens and Knowing)--it was around 106db on average, thanks to my fuzzy math on what reference volume number is on the PrePro. I set it to that same number (-2) last night, and the SPL meter told the tale. I have recalibrated since last year, but because I still baseline at 75db at MLP for all speakers before i start to go Qsys-Qrazy, the numbers probably aren't too far off.

Yeah man, it would have been awesome if you were going to make it, but I’ll do one again next year on a weekend when you definitely can make it down.

Depending on how these sessions go this weekend, I might host quarterly G2Gs...I’ve also been meaning to chat with some local folks to start up a movie-watching club where maybe once a month we vote on a movie and watch it in someone’s theater, simply rotating the locations. Will probably coordinate that one in the Area Home Theater Meets subforum.

That's good to hear you could hold more G2Gs as I am not able to make this re-scheduled one. Vicariously, I will have to rely on the reports of other attendees.

UNLEASHED: THE G2G is happening this weekend!!!

Session 1 is kicking off Sat night at 7pm, Session 2 is kicking off at 10am Sunday morning, and Session 3 is kicking off Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm.

20 minutes of high resolution audio and 60 minutes of largely 4K immersive demo material are ready to facilitate the unleashing of the beast upon the public.

Like all G2G-throwers who have come before me, I can’t emphasize just how much time has been dedicated the material creation and selection. Finding real gems in films not generally known for AV prowess was also a goal of mine.

For instance: There is a scene in Sully where Capt. Sully has a flashback to his military days where his fighter jet was malfunctioning. That scene, played back at AVS-approved volume levels, places you RIGHT IN THE COCKPIT or RIGHT IN THE SKY or RIGHT UNDER THE PLANE (excellent immersive mixing) during the landing. It’s a short demo scene, but one of my favorite in the demo queue.

Yeah man, I was looking forward to meeting you. When I used to frequent the What’s Your System Configuration, I think Craig referenced your screen wall build a couple times (baffle wall?). I remembered pepar because it sounds like pepper and I put pepper on everything—even in lemonade). But there shall indeed be more!

We met one time at Craig's theater. I think it might have been when he bought the Platinums ... or maybe implemented "wides". It all runs together.

My name is pepar and I am a chilihead. The inspiration was "Peppar" Absolute Vodka although those files seem to be corrupted. Glad to hear you share my capsicum obsession. I will bring some home made sauces with me. Mustardy Habanero, Red Jalapeno, Roasted Garlic Habanero and the newest, Pineapple Ghost.

Oh you make your own pepper sauce? You can just grab a u-haul and move down here this Sunday. Thanks a bunch! Lol, but seriously do I smell a pepper sauce eating contest between sessions 1 and 2?

..... maybe no contest... Session 2 would see seeeeveral bathroom interruptions. Lol.

Nah I've only Been to Craig's house one time, that was right after checking out Dennis' system.

CORRECTION: i've been to Craig's house twice... ...the second trip is what convinced me i needed Triad Platinum LCRs in my life.

Posted this over in the Qsys thread, but figured I’d post here for anyone interested in the inner workings of the listening modes employed in The Beast, Unleashed:

Quote:
Originally Posted by BrolicBeast View Post

Tapping a blue box above each speaker does two things: tapping and dragging up or down will increase or decrease the gain, but more importantly (and here’s why I went with this box as opposed to the knob), I can tap once and input a gain value directly. This is important because it allows for a level of accuracy not really possible (or not as quickly possible) as with the knobs and other options. PEQ is accessible on the “Wall” pages.

There are several listening modes, each one the product of painstaking testing and lengthy evaluation:

CALIBRATION: this mode disables all curves, shelves, and customizations to allow me to take neutral speaker/subwoofer measurements.

ATMOS: This mutes all non-ceiling speakers. Great for determining how much overhead content has been mixed into a track.

MUSIC: This mode was created purely for two-channel music. I’ve tailored this mode to really bring voices forward. The result is a very clear-sounding vocal presentation.

MOVIE NIGHT: This mode is basically for casual watching. Ticks all of the right boxes calibration-wise, and is basically “industry standard” before customization. If the other modes are the “after” then this is the “before.”

BEAST MODE: This is the mode that sounds great with everything. All material thrown at it excels. Has been customized to provide a high-impact experience with zero listening fatigue, even at very loud volumes.

THE BROLIC EXPERIENCE: This mode tightens the immersive audio bubble ( Dolby Atmos, DTS:X) around the seating area. This is certainly the recommended listening mode.

DANGER CLOSE: This mode is extreme. This mode is not for the faint of heart, as it uses a very special EQ shelf in conjunction with some other tweaks on the subwoofers that really put you into the action. This mode is, to me, the ULTIMATE listening mode. :-)

Thats my iPad (current model)! I got it solely for media purposes this past May or June, so i really only use it to fuel my workout music (through wireless headphones) and theater use (qsys, plex, sonos, etc.)
