Sliding Doors an Option?

Looking to build a home addition which will be used for two rooms. One, a dedicated home theater and the other an open entertaining area (with a bar).

My wife and I are wondering if we could have some sort of sliding doors or some way to open up the home theater if we're entertaining a lot of folks.

Is this a horrible idea? Anyone know of any good options?

Lots of good options there. You could put in a set of double pocket doors, that slide back into the wall cavities. That would open things up nicely when you wanted to 'join' the two rooms without encroaching on available floor space for open doors, and still let you close the theater off nicely for light control when needed.

...but only for light control.

As far as sound control, it is possibly the worst choice. I've installed many pocket doors and I think that beyond having little sound containment you will have a rattling problem.

Double doors would be an improvement and a single door the best choice.

However, you have to make a choice based on your own priorities. If aesthetics are paramount then sliding doors may be for you. Double doors would be a good compromise.

I think you can solve the rattling but not the sound leakage inherent in multiple doors. You may want to visit the Johnson pocket door hardware website for ideas.
