Lightbulb V-T HT 2.0: Dedicated Room within a Room within a Concrete Home

I'm finally getting around to posting a build thread for theater 2.0. In July of 2014 we started building a concrete home using ICF or Insulated Concrete forms. Here at AVS I will concentrate on the dedicated theater built into a basement room of that home. Originally I was designing a multi-purpose Theater/Gameroom but eventually that design changed into two separate rooms, the dedicated theater and a Lobby/Arcade room. Though we ended up with a smaller theater we were able to improve our sound containment efforts.

Theater Size: The unfinished area set aside for the home theater is 16'6" wide and 19'5". Ceilings throughout the basement are 9' clear but we were able to step down the theater area gaining about 16" for 10'4" ceilings. Building a room within a room cut down our finished size quite a bit leaving 15'6" wide and 18'6" in length. Height varies due to the soffits from about 7'8" on the riser under the lowest soffit to just under 10' above the first row of seats.

Usage: 65% Movies, 25% Gaming, 10% TV

Design: I'd like for theater 2.o to be a very clean and open design. Components can be visible, in wall/on-wall but I want very little protruding into the room. 8 "Good Seats" with the front row of 4 being the ideal seats.

I like our current theater but I think I missed out not going with a wider AT screen.

Link to finished photos in old build thread.

The Plan:

So this is what we ended up with:

Showing Soffits:

Sound "Proofing" efforts:
  • The Theater is completely decoupled from the rest of the house... Well as decoupled as we could make it. It doesn't even share a slab with the rest of the basement. Exterior walls sit 1" away from the ICF/concrete walls on three sides and 1" away from the load bearing wall in the back. These walls then support a new ceiling interleaved between the floor joists above.
  • All walls and ceilings will have 1 layer or in some cases 2 layers of 5/8" OSB and a layer of 5/8" drywall with Green Glue between.
  • All walls and ceilings bays are stuffed with insulation.
  • All outlets, lights, switches, supply ducts, return vents and in-wall speakers are given a similar backer-box treatment of at minimum 2 layers of OSB.
  • You will then exit from the theater into the lobby that although not decoupled from the rest of the house has OSB/Drywall treatment and a second door to help contain the noise coming through the theater door.

a 16 inch tall riser only requires a single step not two, Actually two 5 and change steps will feel awkward but I would make it a big deep step as shown in my Big Step thread. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/19-ded...big-steps.html

The riser finished out at closer to 18", by the time we add a sub-floor to the lower area I think we are looking at rise of 5-3/4" on three steps. We tested it out and they were comfortable as long as we made the run at least 12" I might mock up some big a$$ steps and see how those feel.

Drywall & Green Glue is Done... Now it's getting finished.

Screen Wall from the entry

Screen Wall from the back row

Looking back towards the riser

Empty Soffits above the screen... 2 - 6' long areas ~ 15" x 15" for use as base traps

Ceiling from the back looking forward. Each of these squares will get a base trap too, except the center section in the back. This is the bay for the projector.

Ceiling from the front.

Looking towards the EQ Room

A friend shot this picture of my house... Thought it was cool even if it does capture the worst side, aesthetically.

I'll post some more exterior pics when it drys out a little. Concentrating on the interior right now.

Holy COW! Where do you live, OZ?! There's a yellow-ish foot path running right thru an emerald forest that is DIRECTLY next to your house. And there's nothing else around but that.

Where I live, when I see that much green, I expect to see big numbers every 10 yards!

...and there's a freeking RAINBOW coming out of your house, no less.

What, you ride a unicorn to work too?!

Between the concrete (ICF) construction, my sound containment efforts and the 1.5 football fields to the nearest neighbor.... that shouldn't be a problem.

For the Theater and Lobby Colors I just took one of Sherwin-Williams HGTV Color Palettes and picked the colors I liked... "...exclusive color collections and paint designed for beautiful color transitions throughout your home." Ha, Color design for idiots.

The theater will be Tricorn Black for the Screen Wall and Ceiling. Well-Bred Brown for the Walls.
THe Lobby is Latte for the base color, Antique Red for the Red team and Indigo Batik for the Blue team.

This is gonna be nice. Like Big was saying 16" only needs one step. Mine is 16" and I did just like he mentioned with a huge deep step. I really like the look of it. I'd say you could go 18" tall and be fine. You're room is almost identical to mine. Mine is 16x21'6" with 10'4" ceilings as well. Whats cool about that high of a riser and that ceiling height is even projecting a 170" picture at the proper height you can literally walk on the edge of the stage and not be close to the light path and it makes the room feel huge, even on the bottom row there is plenty of room to play kinetic or walk around and not be in it's path.

I've also owned the RLS2 inwalls. Probably one of my best consumer speakers, great choice. Great vocals and able to hit around -5db from reference. When I sold my last house and HT those were behind the screen.

With the painting done we have been working on flooring, tiling, doors and trim... but we started with the 2nd floor and are working our way down. So it may be a while yet before I have some more theater updates. .... SIGH...

In fact I'm kicked out of the basement entirely for a few days while the finish drys.

We went with a stained concrete finish for the basement outside of the theater.

While I wait I'm speculating on my eventual equipment list.

For the projector I'm playing the wait and see game. Will have to be something with lens memory for the scope screen zoom. Probably not 4K because of $$$.

I'm leaning towards a 120" Wide Scope Falcon Screen with their new Horizon AT fabric. That will make my 16x9 image about the same size as my current theater.
