Constant work-in-progress home theater

I've had my projector since about 2011 and have been shining it on walls ever since. Finally decided after seeing free shipping and a discount on the 150" screen at monoprice that I'd order it. It sat in the box while I was up in my attic in 120 degree heat running cat6 network cables around my house. This included drilling from the attic all the way down to my first floor but thats not important for this thread.

When I was planning out how I wanted it to look I decided to look into red themed rooms and decided on a kind of light red wine-ish looking color for the walls and a near black onyx color for the trim and ceiling.

Specs for my equipment
  • Espon 6050UB
  • Marantz SR8012
  • Front L/R: Klipsch RP-8000F
  • Center: Klipsch RP-504C
  • Surround L/R: Klipsch PRO-160RPW
  • Surround Back L/R: Klipsch RP-600M
  • Atmos: Klipsch PRO-160RPC
  • Subwoofers: HSU VTF-3 MK5 (x2)
Still working out other details and need to rethink the rack layout since I went with an AVR instead of separates.

Old:

Epson 8350 projector
Monoprice 150" white fabric screen
Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 channel reveiver
Four corner speakers are Sony SSF-7000 tower speakers
Subwoofer, center and surround rears are leftover Onkyo parts from an HTIB from years ago

During construction, wish the builder would have let me run network and speaker cable when prior to drywall..

How monoprice ships their screen, has an internal box with corner reinforcement. I bet you could run it over and it'd be ok

The worst part, working in the attic. Wore a full body cover suit with goggles, a breather mask and gloves

First time painting a darker color, a word of advice, take your time and blend each coat well to avoid striping

I was in need of a nice way of blacking out the windows to avoid and light bleed behind the screen, found a company on here with a product called blackoutez. Worked perfectly for my needs.

I lied earlier, had to go back in my attic to install a H shaped 2x4 reinforcement area for my projector. Was a lot faster than running cables.

Ran speaker wires under the baseboards/carpet edge, didn't want to mess with in-wall so soon...

More work to come decorating and a getting a nicer couch that what I have now.

In the future I would like to get a couch similar to this

Finally worked on my theater after many years.

Pushing forward, got the subs in today and should have the rest of the speakers tomorrow afternoon. Delay on getting my sanus center/surround stands until next week though.

Right pedal seems like it's always stuck to the carpet for some reason. Only had it for about 10 months and I'm going to be scheduling my second service pretty soon.

PreciseD 09-09-2019 08:29 PM

Did it come with turn signals? Or was that an option ;)

First bmw so I wasn’t sure, was surprised when they appeared in the car at delivery.

So I have both plugged in with one port plugged to get a bit deeper bass. Think I’m a hair away from turning the amps all the way down and it blows my room to pieces.

mach250 09-10-2019 02:22 PM

Some more stuff to get into the room...should call in sick at work...

I think you should change the screen to an AT screen with a goal post minimal wall design by and raise the center channel to ear level, and tuck the gear behind the screen. ;)

Any recommendations for AT screens?

BIGmouthinDC 10-04-2019 05:45 AM

SeymourAV

As others have said, SeymourAV
I have a SeymourAV F120 XD Center Stage.

If you need a lower cost model, you could look at Silver Ticket. I had bought a couple of them, but never actually used them, and actually still have one sitting in my closet, haven't been able to sell.

Before my build was close to being done, I decided to go 2.35 instead of 16x9.

That would be too small for what I'd like to set up. I've been contemplating the wider ratio but this would force my 16:9 movies to be small in comparison. Only have a 13 1/2 wide area to use and this forces my L/R speakers pretty close to the walls. If I do an AT screen I can push a 2.35 ratio up to around 158" diagonal with an inch and a half on either side for decoration or led accents. I wonder if it would make more sense to do a DIY with an AT fabric and just build a wooden frame to customize?

dang it, now you guys have my mind running on even more gear  ...thinking about this makes it seem the best avenue, might have a friend I can sell my screen to without too much loss...which I just sent a message too :D

Great space! I agree with the others about the AT screen so the center isn't so low. Maybe you frame out the front wall with some 2x4s and grill clothe outside of the screen, then you can build a baffle wall loaded with bass trapping/absorption.

The other thing you could do if you didn't want to go that route is just scoot your seats forward more and do a 2.35:1, but I agree with you that can be a waste. Plus then you get into the whole masking thing, and watch a foreign scope movie where they have the subtitles below the bars lol, or something with an IMAX scene that changes to 16:9 on the bluray, etc. and open but a can of worms.

I like what the end result can be with the AT screen but I probably won't mess with it until I find a local buyer interested in my current one. Until then I can just make the plans for what I'd have to build. I like the idea of making the screen lift up for access like youthman if you're familiar with him on youtube.

None of this was important

BIGmouthinDC 04-26-2020 06:47 AM

yes that is load bearing and I've never seen open web doubled up floor joists severing the purpose of a support beam. I would have my doubts that the design is adequate. But that is just looking at the picture, there may be more to it that I can't see.

I spent 10 years in the roof and floor truss business a long time back, and often girder trusses are designed as support members.

Another day, another round of mental planning...today is materials for sound deadening panels. Already have 10 yards of black speaker grill type material I bought from joann a while back. Just need the insulation and thinking about using MDF for the framing. Going to squeeze the extra .5 of depth so I only need one panel of MDF.

I assume you have included the saw blade waste in the calculations, meaning you will end up somewhat under your dimensions.

Yeah, the scrap areas should more than make up for sawdust.

I think I finally decided on a final layout, my only concern is will sitting about 2-3 feet from the left and right surrounds be too close? Will end up being about a 15 foot viewing distance.

Went with a Middle Atlantic RCS-2724 rack as it will be plenty of space for what I need it to do.
