It all began when the theater was being calibrated back in Nov. During the initial playback at reference level with only 2 channels active, the power source was tripped. Knowing right away that the theater would require more power, I called my electrician and he let me know he'd be on-site the following Mon (happened on a Sat).

After spending about an hour or so running the new outlets to the A/V closet, everything seemed to be going as planned! Then it began...

My front left tower had a nasty crackle sound to it. I immediately thought this was a ground loop issue. I had my electrician come back out and we tried many many different things, including making sure everything in
the house was run in parallel, to get the crackle resolved by no luck. Finally, as I had once before tried swapping out the RCA cable from my receiver to the miniDSP, I tried one more time as that would be considered "low hanging fruit". TA-DA! It fixed the front left tower!

However, in the process of doing whatever we did, my subwoofers now had that ominous, low hum sound. I believe unless you were listening for it, you likely wouldn't recognize it. But I knew it was there and would hear it every time I got through watching something. Once I called attention to it, anyone else in the room would then hear it. My electrician was out several more times and we tried many other things to try to isolate the problem.

Troubleshooting went on for several weeks when I had the time and really didn't put much effort into it now as I thought it I was stuck with it as tried so many things! I tried unplugging the HDMI's, RCA's all the equipment from the outlets to see what would make a difference. Nothing though.

My electrician stopped by again last week to look once again at the electrical because mind you, before the new outlets were installed, there was no hum. I know I have given the poor guy headaches trying to figure this out! We decided to call Rythmik to see if we might have overlooked something. Following their instruction of unplugging all HDMI cables (yet again after previous attempts) as cable boxes are a likely culprit, they also mentioned the cheater plugs (3 prong converter to 2 prong eliminating the ground) as the subs are grounded internally. As my electrician was in the room, he mentioned that he had just got done disconnecting the ground connection from those outlets the subs were plugged into which should've yielded the same exact result. Rythmik also mentioned to try a different audio cable.

After they said that, we turned the subs sideways to access the speaker cable and noticed if you were to slightly move the RCA cable, it would make a difference in sound and not in a good way! The humming would get louder. So went to Best Buy this past Sat to get another RCA cable that would reach from subwoofer to miniDSP/receiver. Swapped out the cables but no luck. At this point, I was really discouraged as I thought I really was stuck with the ground loop issue.

I kept going back to thinking it had to be something with that outlet that was installed because when I would unplug the LCR amps from outlets, that seemed to make a bit of a difference. As a last resort, I went to Lowes yesterday (Sun) and picked up a few cheater plugs. I thought, perhaps seeing if the ground issue might be with those outlets so tried plugging in the amps with the cheater plugs into those outlets. I couldn't believe it as it still didn't help!! I even tried running those amps through a power conditioner but nope, nothing as the hum was still there.

So there I sat pretty discouraged and was putting the cheater plugs back in the package to take them back to Lowes when I thought, you know I have them here and I know we disconnected the ground wires from the outlets and that didn't help, but might as well try putting these plugs on the ends of the subs and hook them in and see what happens. AND LO AND BEHOLD IT FIXED THE ISSUE!!!!!!
Jedi
I just read your post about the ground loop issue.

I'm going through something similar, with my front sub, I tried everything and for the life of me, cannot solve it.
So I ran a separate sub cable from my AV, into the room, outside of the wall and that solved the problem.
So the RG6 in the wall seems to be causing it since the cable I ran outside the wall doesn't cause any hum.

Thinking of trying this cheater you used, do you have a link for it, or which one you got?
Thanks

And nice work on HTOTM!

Ground loop issues are a pain! Thankfully, mine was an easy fix, just was the absolute last thing I checked lol

This little guy is what did the trick. It's just a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter. I can use this because my subs are grounded internally. You may check about yours. But also know how annoying it can be to have that hum and if this does work, might be worth the risk if not grounded internally

Are your subs using 3 prong plugs?
I'm using the HSU VTF-3 MK5, and they are using 2 prong AC plugs.
So guessing those may not work, since they are 3 prongs to 2...

Yeah might not work in your situation My subs are 3 prong.

Still, at only about $.70, it's a very inexpensive thing to try. Other than that, might start by getting an electrician to your house and making sure everything in the fuse box is run in parallel. Next thing to try is unplug the cords from your cable box as that can be an issue as well

Congrats! WOW! It took me two days to read through the thread after the HTOTM write-up posted. I am all at once speechless (which my wife would be skeptical of), humbled and a tad envious (can't lie, but I think most of us reading this thread are, as well.) Something in the HTOTM write-up caught my attention and I paid special attention to try and find an answer to my question as I read through the build-thread. So, as Captain Needa, I will apologize if it did escape me.

"The acoustic treatments were integrated into the paneling. “The acoustic treatments and fabric track are all products from Quest. They are in specific locations to provide absorption, diffusion, and reflection."" How was it determined where and how the acoustic paneling would placed? Knowing this would greatly help my own knowledge. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed the read and great question! As part of the overall designing and planning process, Quest ran an acoustical analysis based on the specs of my equipment, room properties and anticipated build. That determined the type of material and location the acoustic paneling would go. I did quite a bit of research ahead of time about reflection points, but am glad that I relied on them for this part as there is SOOO much more to consider when it comes to the science of acoustics.

Hey @jedi1982
Pics of the finished room look SUPER! Love me some Star Wars themes, though I don't think the wife would go for a Death Star themed livingroom. :-)

Great theater, I bet it feels really special.

Good question! We use proprietary modeling to calculate ray tracing, low frequencies for each seat, modal pressure plotting, sweet triangle analysis, and numerical analysis to determine proper placement of everything including treatment types.

Love it and thank you! I like how it's not really specialized in anything but has those signature lights and shapes so you know what the theme is and for those that don't recognize, they can appreciate the uniqueness of it as a theater room

Had a chance to grab a copy of Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition for the PS4 Pro as it went on sale for $20 and holy cow! The HDR looks spectacular!! Have played about 5 hours and am absolutely loving everything about the game. There's just something refreshing about being able to shoot down giant robots with some pretty cool gear...

Yeah it stinks the fact that I knew about what additional Marvel movies already in the making as it takes some of the fun (or agony based on the ending) out of waiting for Avengers #4

My wife and a friend of ours was mad about the ending and didn't understand it. I said it should make since in#4, and they have to bring it to an end at some point. A bunch of the actors are wanting to be done with it I think.

Klipsch KPS-400’s FR/FL with built in 15” 300 watt side firing subs, RC-7 Center, RS-3 Surrounds.

I've been following your build since the beginning, and I love it. I’m curious - Do you have an Apple TV or other digital streamer, and if so do you use it more or less than UHD blu rays?

That's great news and hope you've been able to find some of the content here helpful The only streaming I do is via Netflix and haven't streamed any UHD content through that. I had a friend bring his Amazon Fire Stick and hooked to my receiver to stream Westworld in The Force Theater and plan on doing that when GoT is released next year as well!

I'm leaning towards cutting the cord when my uVerse contract is up as I don't watch a lot of tv. Primarily have it so my little guy can watch Disney/XD/Nick which, believe, can stream all of those live with several streaming services. Hoping in another year as more people cut the cord, companies will have worked out any kinks or quirks with their systems by then
