The way you have to do it is to open the image to full screen, and then right click and get image URL. It is REALLY long... and there is no other way around it right now. I wish they would support it another way... but it does work.
Thanks for the info. Doesn't sound easier than Flickr so I'll stick with Flickr for the time being, or just use embedded images for (hopefully) the most future-proof approach overall!

As this forum has been hit so hard by this decision of PB, maybe there is a way to convince PB to make a deal with AVSforum.
Maybe for a reduced price funded by the forum, they can give clearance for linking to only this forum
just a thought

I agree with damelon, the URL links are unbelievably long. lol Not sure what's up with that, but, at least it works. For awhile, you couldn't link to photos at all.

Does anyone know if there is a way to use Amazon Photos? With Prime you get unlimited storage. Can you link from there somehow or is it locked behind their site and app?

So can we replicate the embedded photo behavior by uploading photos to AVSForum's gallery / photo upload?

I guess I'll try one:

EDIT: Ok, that works - I guess I'll upload the photos from at least my 'important' threads... <sigh>

And what's with PB claiming that linking/hosting "is against the terms of service for your account level"??? They provided the "embed" codes right on the page of every photo!?!?!? (and still do!)

That's the alternative. However, IIRC, those images will be exclusively visible to forum users and not show up on the Google and other image search engines.

In my particular case I've been posting visualizations and in-depth Star Wars research over at theForce.net. By hotlinking the images these show up on the image search engines and anybody interested in the subjects I'm writing about can examine and read the context by back-tracing theForce.net as the image source. That's why I need the hot-linking function until I find the time to do my own webpage.

Here is an article with alternative providers for hot-linking, but usually with a restricted amount of data volume: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/07/02/ph...r-third-party/

Since what I'm doing is non-commercial I'm really upset about photobucket-kicking-our-buckets. If they would have offered at least the option for a moderate fee for non-commercial applications, that would have been something I could have lived with.

With all the negative backleash at Photobucket, I'm afraid they won't stay in business that much longer. Failure to offer this aforementioned moderate fee will probably be the end for them as I don't believe their coercion scheme will yield the results they are hoping for.

I'm on my way out of Photobucket. They can rot in all for all I'm concerned.

I too worry about Imgur, but I suppose I can migrate again once they collapse or decide to stab us in the back

It's not to often I agree with a Cyclone. Just kidding buddy!!

After downloading all my albums from Photobucket, I made sure I erased all the photos I had saved there and deleted my account. I know I'm only a very minor blip on their radar, but I'm not gonna leave them with anything that could ever cause someone to visit their site.

I'm sure I'll get flack for this, but I would much prefer that imgur would append a small banner ad at the bottom of the embed image to pay for the bandwidth... maybe they'll do this if too few account owners pony up the $$$ for a premium account.

Yeah a lot of those guys post pictures of holsters, projects, new firearms, training logs etc. I'm sure a very high number of them used photobucket as a way to easily link to photos.

Probably because the suits in the office changed terms before the software team was ready to roll out the new website/interface. So now they create a mess and I bet everyone loses their job when they implode.

So far I've had no luck in attempting to download my photos.

The Zip file downloads OK, but my Zip rejects it when I try to unZip.

Tried about six times over a period of a week.

Any suggestions ?

I successfully downloaded and unzipped one of my albums in windows 10. I didn't use any other program. I remember that once I asked for the down load it took several minutes to prepare the file before I could download it.

Peter, I just tried it again with another folder. After I downloaded I clicked on the zip file in windows and I got a menu that included the option to extract. Worked fine. This is what I see when I click the compressed folder. A tools tab with the all powerful EXTRACT ALL

Mine seemed to unzip okay, but it took ages for them to download. Or get prepared for download.

I suppose almost all existing Photobucket users are doing the same thing, though

Ugh...that's going to be a major hit for this forum. One of the greatest things about this forum is the ability to go back and read and learn from all those great build threads and other helpful threads that are now going to be incomplete.

Unless the plan was to get people so heavily invested in the service that they could extort $400 a year from you when they decided to pull the plug.

I can get a VPN that will handle all of my internet traffic (so they are both receiving it and relaying it.. so twice my traffic in bandwidth) for $100/year all day long. I've seen it for $30 with some services.

To say that you use anywhere near $400/yr is ridiculous. If you know anybody that pays it, I have some $600 epipens to sell them.

Thanks Big.

When I try it everything works as described by you and others - a long delay whilst the download is prepared - followed by the download with no errors reported - and then Zip spits the dummy.

FYI - I'm using Chrome and fully licensed WinZip under Win 7 Pro.

What is it they say about trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result ??!!

WinZip once again reports that the downloaded file is "not a valid zip file".

Cheers,

It's possible that some of the archive's header data was lost/corrupted during the download process. This could strip the archive of its "identity".

I think that there are "tools" to repair/restore such data, but it may be simpler to download another copy of the archive, if possible.

These sites offered easy cut 'n paste widgets for BBcode for years. I don't doubt that the e-suite made this drastic change and sprung it on developers without warning.

My high speed broadband internet has been $41.95 for over 10 years. In my city, it's actually a bargain price.

I wonder if the Photobucket suits expected that there would be a mass exodus from their site, including everyone downloading their images. So much for mitigating their bandwidth demands, eh?

Photobucket: the internet equivalent of that idiot who sneaks through the railroad crossing barricades when they're down, lights flashing, bells ringing. "Hold my beer, watch this (as I change my TOS and piss off half the internet)."

Just a tidbit of information to brighten your day. Fox International Media bought Photobucket from the founders and original venture partners in 2007 for a reported $300 million
Fox sold Photobucket to Ontela in 2009 for an estimated $60 million. Some group of suits made a $240 million error in judgement.

Don't use the attachment or insert picture when posting. The attachment (paperclip) is what creates the thumbnail.

Upload your pictures to your personal gallery (Tools - My Gallery). Once uploaded, click on the small pic to open in a new window, then just right click on the pic and copy; paste into post. Wallah! No thumbnails.

I think you can also open the picture in a new window, copy the URL & paste it into the post. But much easier to copy/paste the pic.

On a new thread, this isn't that big of a deal. But think about some of the really old build threads... or the "SHOW ME YOUR" threads which are collections from everyone. Those will mostly be a whole lot of nothing now. I'm not banking on PB to resolve this, so I have slowly been replacing my photos pages at a time. Fortunately PB used the actual image names in their linking, so I can tell what images were where in my own thread. I've started replacing them but it takes a long time, and it won't fix when people replied with images either. Some things are just going to be broken no matter what. Very sad.

Fortunately, I also backed up BIG's album (from my theater) and a lot of pictures from Sandman's theater (Which I based mine off of) while I was studying it before my build, so I have a lot of old images I can re-import.
