Seamless Home Theater build

Hi All,

This build is going to be kind of unique as it is taking an existing space and basically gluing in a fairly high end setup.

I'll list the current equipment that is going into the build as well as some basic pictures updates and tests as we go along.

What I have:

Speakers:
1.) (3) JBL G-734's (LCR)
2.) (4) JBL Control 328C's (Atmos)
3.) (4) off brand transducers for seats(I'll figure out the brand shortly)
4.) (2) JBL Synthesis S1S Subwoofers (They use the newer JBL 2242H driver)
5.) JBL 4648A-8 (JBL 2226J's likely keep for midbass) Placed under the C.
6.) (2) JBL 4647A (JBL 2226hpl going to place directly under the LR and handle midbass two being used now)
7.) (4) JBL 2152Hs (Being used for surrounds)

AVR/Amps:
1.) Onkyo TX-RZ5100 Preamplifer
2.) (3) Behringer NU4-6000 (to power all speakers main speakers and likely transducers)
3.) Behringer NU3000DSP (for subwoofers)

Projector/Screen:
1.) Carl's Place 140" finished nano-perf screen
2.) Epson Home Cinema 5050UB

Media Players:
1.) Kangroo pocket PC
2.) Nvidia Shield 2017 16GB
3.) Samsung UHD Blu-ray Player

So that is the basics....and here is a random pictures and more to come of stuff. Our goal is to set it up such that the home theater can be used generally as well as we have a bar in our basement. So we can throw up some sports or watch a movie and get the most use out of the investment we can.

I tested all the parts of the system last night. I am going to pick up the last two JBL 8340s I need tonight here are some testing pictures. The NU4-6000s worked fantastic! Easily a great solution for powering your mains.

As things are moving we have updated the wall painting it black where the screen will cover and The start of the media/server room has begun running a coax into the basement. A 42U rack is on the way and these shelves likely are going to go away.

The screen should be pretty much the whole wall, the server room is directly behind the black wall.

Here is a rough version of what I'll setup likely for my LF and LFE channels.

I still have two more 4647A's but the boxes need a bit of work and I need to recone at 2226HPL. So perhaps in the future something to mess with.

Got the screen up and roughed in for testing. Also tested our the JBL 2152H...they will be taking over for my surrounds over the JBL 8340s getting two more of them. Here are some pics. This is Carls Nanoperf...it works great! This is the 140" screen. IMAX feel I was going for!

There are no current direct plans to mess with the tile floor. There might be an area rug. The tile has not caused much of an issue at the moment that I can find. I will do more testing to figure out why I don't notice the tile floors impact but I believe it is largely due to the 7 foot ceiling and the fact that the tiles are insulated.

I know that the tile should be giving me an issue but I'm not seeing it yet, I'll do more complete tests and post the results once everything is setup.

I feel like a Demo review is in order.

I spent a few hours at Darren's home before buying his "old" surrounds. He demoed his setup. The system sounds great and the setup fits the space well. He has some great equipment and a nice space. His entire ceiling is an acoustic panel which is lucky for his acoustics.

All those JBL 15's and 18's has lead to a system that has great bass and all the dynamics of a real cinema. In fact if there is one compliment I can pay his system, it reminded me of a cinema in a good sense.

I hope to come back and help take measurements and hear it once his surrounds are in.

The final two JBL 2152H speakers came in today. I'll be testing them tonight to make sure they are in good working order and then all the speakers for the setup will be complete!

Have you had a chance to hear the 328C's before? I've been looking to use these as atmos with a danley based theater and was curious of their fidelity.

I have listened to them for testing. They keep up very nicely. On par with the JBL 8340A. Their specs almost match. I'm very happy with them. I also have a set of the JBL 227C I think sound amazing also. I think you'll be happy with them. Honestly don't know how you could do better without going to what I'm using for surrounds but then it gets kind of huge. The JBL 2152H is the ultimate multipurpose speaker.

I should add that spec wise the 328C crush the SCS8s

This is the JBL 2152H mounted in to a MTC-300BB8...you have to remove the cap and hang it from the mount. Works great.

Alright this is where I could use some help or ideas. I need to hang or mount or place on a stand the above JBL 2152Hs in the can. Any ideas or thoughts? I was just going to hang them down via wire but that seems a big janky maybe there is a better way?

What about using decoupling mounts used for soundproof wall construction. I have some you could look at. They would provide a strong mostly rigid mount but decouple at mid and low frequencies.

I am back for a quick update. People have asked a lot of questions about the JBL Control 328C and why I was not going with the more conventional SCS8.

The JBL Control 328C has far better output and runs a superior compression driver. The SCS 8 uses the 2414H CD where as the 328C uses the 2412H. The output LF wise also allows the 328C to go down to 45hz at -10 where the SCS 8 is 70hz at -10 and a sad 90hz at -3. To me the SCS8 was never really an option.

So new possible problem. The 2416H driver I'm using could have issues with it's older diaphragm.

The 2416H has never changed but they updated the diaphragm to a what is called a 2416H-1. The -1 means its updated and design flaw was corrected...the design flaw does not mean that they sound any different but the original has the ability to fail in an unexpected way that the -1 does not have an issue with causing it to rub against the magnet.

I can likely test for this problem with the Dayton UMM-6 I have but I'd rather not take everything apart to figure out if it is having an issue.

So this is an update for my LFE obviously it's a bit hot...but I'll fix that. The lower spread is with the stock VBSS by Matt G set to stereo...the higher output is after I crossed over the 18s into the 15s. A lot can be said for letting speakers play in their sweet spot. Especially it seems subwoofers. More can be tweaked to get it flatter which will happen but so far so good.

So you are useing these for side and rear surrounds, did you get them mounted and do you have any pics. Do they make a box like the scs 8 come in that you could mount these in to. The way the scs 8 mount to the wall with the bracket makes it easy.

They don't make the SCS8 box, the box is part of the SCS8.

I am only using the JBL 2152H for surrounds see the pictures. I also took pictures of my atmos speakers which I am using the JBL Control 328C's. The 328C out perform the SCS8. In most peoples setups the 328C would be fine for surrounds and atmos but I was targeting keeping the timbre the same for my surrounds. It certainly pays off...also I needed a wide spread for the atmos so the 2152Hs are out. Everything is not finished yet...just put in roughly the final places. I did get lucky that the 2152Hs fit in the same can as the 328C.
Let me know if you have more questions!

You have mounted them to some kind of speaker stand. Looks good. If I do a Jbl speaker the 328c is what I was looking for for my in ceiling speakers.

So equipment and gear wise I'm finished with the main bits now I'm on to finishing everything.

I've ordered 3 JBL ST400s to be added to my LCR to help the high end of the front of the house. I'll keep everyone informed on the impacts.
