Congrats Mikela for HTotM, well deserved.

As you know I followed your build from more or less day one. The result is beautiful and I can only imagine the sonic pleasure it brings.

Well deserved recognition. A lot of thought went into achieving the ultimate performance. I think Mike's wife deserves special recognition for allowing him to follow his dreams.

My kind of theater. Function over form every time. Love the black sort of industrial look with exposed wires, speakers and room treatment. And I have no doubt it sounds stupendous. And LOTS of "woofage" !!

Congrats. Would love to hear it sometime !!!

You're close, Art. It's from a play by Czech writer Karel Capek https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.U.R. - the origin of the word "robot".

This is close to the perfect design for me, and I agree about the speakers being point sources for optimum 3D (or even 2D) sound placement and imaging.
I've always wanted to hear some Danley speakers, I bet they are expensive!

However, I would put the left and right speakers behind the screen too and make the screen bigger / wider

Actually, given this room's height, I'd probably use a 16:9 screen with automatic vertical masking (including sliding-in of the A-lens) for Scope, for those times you want IMAX you can roll out the A-lens from the light path. But that's just me, I tend to watch everything on my projector, so around 50-50 TV + Games vs Movies.

The subs on the front wall fire bass into the room. In a typical room, those bass waves would bounce off the back wall and combine with the bass coming from the front wall: where ever they combine in phase, they re-enforce each other and create peaks; where ever they combine out of phase, they cancel each other and create nulls. So you end up with peaks & nulls along the length of the room, giving you uneven frequency response and inconsistency for multiple rows of seating.

Unlike a typical room, Mike has turned the last 3 feet of his room into a giant bass absorber, making the back wall disappear (acoustically). If there's no back wall for the bass waves to bounce off of, then there will be no peaks & nulls along the length of the room. Of course, no absorber is perfect, so the peaks & nulls are greatly reduced but not 100% eliminated. Still a big improvement.

To minimize peaks & nulls across the width and height of the room, the subs are placed in modal nulls (locations where the bass interacts the least with the room). So they're at 1/6, 3/6, 5/6 points of room width and 1/4, 3/4 points of room height. This minimizes the first 5 width modes (resonances) and first 3 height modes of the room. As a result, measuring across the width of his room will show less than 1 dB of variation from seat to seat. All this before any EQ is used.

Sanjay

Congratulations!!! I can't believe I have never even contemplated going the exposed wire route before! It's a total win-win, though, as not only did it end up looking pretty cool, but future-proofing is a total non-issue since you can always reconfigure or re-do things to your heart's content. Well done! The zero compromises approach is certainly inspiring.

"Windows 10, Kodi, MPC-BE, madVR"

@mikela I'm guessing you use Kodi as a library explorer, then launch MPC-BE as an external player? Are you aware of Kodi DSPlayer? It's more of an all-in-one solution (supports madVR + LAV filters too)

Yes, launching MPC-BE as an external player to Kodi. I thought DSPlayer was no longer supported?

I had a great time experiencing Mike’s theater at the LA area get together. That SBA must be experienced to fully comprehend what Mike has built. I remember the wall flexing in the restroom on the outside of the theater when someone was demoing the opening scene to BR 2049. I had never seen any like that before! The only downside is that it seems no one wants to follow Mike’s room as we haven’t had a GTG in a while.

Hi, Mike
The SBA is really something. Do you care to share some waterfall graph before EQ?
I'm still in the planning phase of my HT and like to explore the possibility of SBA with less driver.
Theoretically, according to sdurani, the number of bass position depends on the number of resonances trying to eliminate.

You did the same 6 positions BUT double the driver to get bigger output I guess?

My room is 140"x226"x98", I tried the room mode calculator, looks like I only need to get rid of 1st height and width; 2nd of my length if I'm cross at 80Hz?
But I don't know how to interpret into where to put the drive and how many drives I need.
Please help.
