Outrigger Theater and Poker Room Project

Intro

I have been a home theater dreamer for as long as I can remember. In the summer of 2012, I started looking at what I could do with an addition to my house. There were lots of comments and suggestions from the community that I appreciated. In the summer of 2013, while I was trying to garner support for the addition from the spouse, I picked up my first projector and entered the fray with a 10' x 10' multi-purpose room. Fast forward to January of 2019 (and a couple of life events later), I have a legitimate space to work with.

So begins the new journey....

The Space

The new space consists of two upstairs rooms. The first room was a theater for the previous homeowner(s). The second room is a bedroom that has a full bath and a modest walk-in closet. My plans for the second room are a dedicated poker room for home games.

Room 1: 16'10" x 20'7"
Room 2: 14'4" x 14'2"

I do not move in until February, so I have not spent a lot of time in the space. However, I was able to take a couple of measurements during a home inspection and added them to the realtor marketing data shown above.

Plans

There are several items that must be addressed with the theater. Lighting and light control will be a big one. The current screen is a 150" pulldown that is in front of the windows. I am thinking that I will need to rotate the seating 90% to get to a 2.35:1 fixed screen. Neither the currently installed projector or the one from my old space have lens memory, so a new projector is in order. I am thinking 7.X.4 ATMOS so a new audio chain is required. I will continue to use Crestron control. I am a bit worried that it appears that each room upstairs has a single 15A circuit each. Changing that sounds expensive. The poker room and HT area will both be competing for my time. I am not sure what my priority will be. Probably half involved in both so I can be the least efficient!

Budget

I do not have a set budget, but the only thing that I have ever bought new for my "theater" was a Oppo 103. I appreciate a good value so it will be difficult to just throw money at this and sleep at night. I will only be answering to myself, so perhaps it will be a bit easier to spend money.

Other Thought(s)

Not sure if I am starting this thread too early since I have not moved in yet. I would hate to jinx anything. I look forward to deleting this part of the post in a few weeks once I close.

Open Invitation

I look forward to any and all comments on my journey.

Starting Point

House price included all furniture and electronics. Audio is a Bose 5.1 that does not handle HDMI. The screen is a 150" Elite Screens pulldown. The projector is some sort of BenQ. There is seating for 8 that is not offset. Unknown brand for the seating. The windows treatments are horizontal blinds.

Equipment available from the previous room

Denon 4806 AVR
Oppo BDP-103
JVC RS1X Projector
Lumagen Radiance XD
Crestron AV2 Controller
Crestron RMC3 Controller
Cambridge Audio Bass Cube 15

95% chance I am buying 3 Fusion 10s and 2 Volt 6s from @chadsmith013 on 1/19/2019 for my LCRs and initial surrounds.

What do you plan on doing with the windows? Will you put a seal over them that’s aesthetically pleasing from the outside?

The power could be an interesting one. If you plan on running an atmos system and decently powerful subs, you might be tripping that 15 amp ... do you know if there is headroom in the breaker box?

Are the AC exhaust and return in the floor? I didn’t see them in the images.

Looks like a fantastic space!

Windows right now I am thinking motorized blinds with side channels. But then columns would not work with out blocking some of the window(s). The only lights at the moment up there come from items plugged into the electrical outlets. There are no overhead lights yet. So, the windows serve an important function.

There is 200A service to the house. There are places for at least one more breaker. The breakers are much bigger physically than what is in my current house. Not sure if the Arc fault makes that happen or not. I have been thinking I want to install a generator, so reworking the breaker box would not be that noticeable in that big expense.

The AC looks like this and it is in the ceiling. I did not snap a pic of the AHU that is in the closet but it is only servicing 716 SQFT. So there is probably lots of head room.

I am looking forward to seeing what the attic space looks like. This appears to be so much easier than what I had in the old house.

Oh..oh….

I just made an impulse buy on a used Integra DHC-80.6 11.2-Channel Pre/Pro on the recommendation of someone I trust very much.

Looks like I am going to need a real rack now.

I think I can use the Denon 4806 as the amp to start with since the Denon has 7.1 inputs. @chadsmith013 says I don't need killer power for the Fusion 10s.

this is correct...AVR power is more then plenty...

you will see that in 2 days...after you hear them, you can let me know if you think they need an amp

I wonder if the existing mount will work with the JVC RS1X

That JVC has to be better than the BENQ, right?

They let you keep the Bose? haha you’re off to a great start with that space and equipment list already.

Cool to see you integrating a poker room in here too. I like to host home games and I’m looking to use my theater space with a folding table down the line. Also, interesting to see Crestron used residential, thought they were mostly commercial now. Subscribed!

I contacted the seller and told him if he had a use for it to go ahead and take the Bose with him. He is a really nice guy.

As far as the Crestron goes, there is a lot of older equipment on eBay these days. You just have to watch and be patient to find a good price. It makes it a little unique in the DIY community.

I am looking to build my own poker table. There are several videos online that show how to do that. At least one I have seen used folding legs. My 1st step will be locating a set of double pedestal legs to serve as a base. I have a friend that did that and I cannot let him out do me! :>)

Let me give him some props:

These are the legs that I am after. My friend found a used dining room table for $100 that he bought and discarded everything but the legs. Excuse the mess on the table, he was in the middle of setting up the table in a new space and was working a bar shelf project. I do think he should have been showing the Russell's Reserve a bit more respect than having it hang out on the floor.

Thanks for joining in for the ride.

I put a note with a picture in the Jax thread showing them hooked up to my set up in the apartment. I don't close on the house until the 31st (and move in on the 4th of Feb). I am likely to go over on the 31st and make audio and video though! :>)

I have started my SketchUp drawing to play with the space and the seating. I have forgotten a lot of how to use Sketchup. I was only ever a hack anyway ...

The Integra DHC 80.6 showed up on Wednesday. I updated to the latest firmware since it said it fixed some Atmos issues.

Getting closer to pulling the trigger on the 8 Volt 10's needed for the surrounds and overheads. I wonder if I should break into 4 and 4 and do two separate buys with 2 separate assembly periods to spread the $$ outlay and effort outlay....

I am assuming I need a full gallon of Duratex but I have not done any math to confirm.

I like how dark @dlinsley got his front wall.

Something to strive for. For you DIYSG folks, I believe those are Titans as the LCRs behind the AT. They can be seen in this post Litter box remodel post 61

I think I am leaning towards fabric panels eventually. I may paint a dark flat as an interim step for the walls.

Thanks! Yes, Titan 615LX behind the screen. I probably should do something, but so far I haven't done anything to the cabinets. Now that I have the black panels in (completed just last Monday) they are no longer visible even through the semi-transparent GoM FR701.

Looks like I am going to build my theater off of the previous purchases of the Jacksonville HT group.

I went over and bought Don's JVC X990 from him. Thanks Don! That laser Sony he has sure makes a beautiful picture.

Who's house shall I shop at next....

My 15 inch single sub certainly is not filling the space with bass.
