Room Layout & Analysis Spreadsheet

Linked to this thread is a beta version of a room layout and frequency response estimation spreadsheet. The spreadsheet:

+ Allows entry of room dimensions, listener location and independent placement of right and left speakers
+ Calculates the location of the first reflection points along each of the side walls (for treatment placement purposes)
+ Calculates the speaker boundary interference frequencies
+ Calculates the room modes based on the dimensions of the room
+ Estimates the untreated room frequency response curve at the listener location
+ Estimates the T60 (time for a sound to decay -60db) based on the surfaces in the room (using Sabine's formula)
+ Calculates the Schroeder frequency for the room (room crossover frequency from resonator to reflector)
+ Calculates main speaker listening angles
+ Allows screen size and aspect ratio selection from a dropdown menu and calculates screen viewing angles
+ Calculates Dolby ATMOS ceiling speaker optimal locations given ceiling height (45 degrees from listener ear height)
+ Creates a scaled map of the room with speaker and listener locations marked

This was created to help me do all of these things as I'm designing a new home theater. There are various tools that do some of these things, but I didn't find one (that was free) that did all of them. I have done my best to validate the calculations, but there could be errors. The estimated frequency response curve at the listener is a rough estimate as I had to use linear interpolation for the location on the sinusoidal wave instead of a more precise calculation.

Feel free to use this for your own home theater adventures. Comments are welcome, but please be kind. It may not be perfect, but it meets my needs and might help others as well.

I'm posting this for AVSForum members to use freely because of all of the helpful information and feedback that this forum has provided over the years.
This was originally posted in Audio Theory and Setup but it is more appropriate here as I have added many home theater calculations.

Spreadsheet Web Version Link | Spreadsheet Download Link

Updates
vb02 - Changed room width data entry to be direct, with secondary entry on listener distance from left wall.
vb10 - Added main speaker angle calculations. For home theater, viewing angle calculations along with a dropdown to select home theater screen size has also been added. The data entry was also simplified.
vb11 - Added Dolby ATMOS ceiling speaker location calcs, added scaled model of the room based on object locations
vb12 - Added main speaker sound transmission time to listener and millisecond delay for side and opposite wall first reflection points
vb14 - Added ability to include up to four subwoofers with independent locations to the analysis. Also reorganized the presentation of data to simplify the visuals.
vb15 - Added front wall first reflection locations and further cleaned up the interface.
Modified delivery to be through the web site, this enables access via mobile devices and computers that do not have Excel.

Latest version vb14 added ability to include up to four subwoofers with independent locations to the analysis. Also reorganized the presentation of data to simplify the visuals.

This is pretty much the full feature set that I plan to add, unless there are solid suggestions that are in scope of what I planned to do. Error and problem reporting as well as feedback is welcome.

I haven't had a chance to download and play with it yet but certainly will, sounds like a ton of work went into this. I'm assuming this is only for rectangular rooms?

Yes, it models rectangles only. Just don't have the time to do odd shapes with multiple angles.

It's probably a fine forum, but just because of the name I've always thought of it as bizarro world.

Modified the link to enable access to the spreadsheet via a web interface. This enables users of mobile, tablet and devices that do not have Excel to use the sheet. (I'm a little shocked that it worked, but it does!)

Very impressive spreadsheet !!! It would be extremly useful to make +2 more positions for 2 sub = the 1/4 and 3/4 on the front + center front + rear wall accordign to Harman recommendations: Subwoofers Optimal Number and Locations.

Thanks. I'm glad that you like the sheet. Good idea on the sub placement addition. I've read the Harmon research and its solid. That said, it might take me a little while because it's the end of the semester and I don't have as much time as I did during the summer - lots of grading!

I did intentionally limit access to the web-interface version for distribution. This method of delivery was requested by my local AV dealer who told me it would be most helpful if their installers could use the calculations on a cell phone or tablet. This distribution method doesn't require Excel or any special computing power, just a web browser and works on a smart phone or tablet. Also, I put a TON of time in to this and didn't want others to steal my work. I'll consider an Excel file release though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Very impressive! Thanks for sharing.

Do you have a build thread or something like this? I think it'd be great to see how you utilize this tool to apply to your own theater room.

Link added so you can download the Excel spreadsheet directly if you prefer that over a web-interface.

Thanks. I'm working on a build thread. I used my spreadsheet during the planning for my room. I had started using tools like Visio to attempt to draw out the elements of the room and place them in proper Dolby and ATMOS configuration. For example, ceiling ATMOS speakers should be at a 45% degree angle from the ear position of the listener. Given 9' ceilings, I had mapped out the room and then drew a line at a 45 degree angle from ear height, and then measured where that line intersected with the ceiling to calculate the location. That got cumbersome as I moved elements of the room around while trying different configurations, so this spreadsheet really helped.

It also aided me in placement of speakers and properly locating my room treatments at first reflection points. I double checked the calculations in my actual room by putting a mirror along the wall and I was glad to see the speaker in the mirror at exactly the point my spreadsheet said the first reflection would be.

This is AWESOME!!! Thanks a lot!!!

I understand and greatly appreciate your work. At my area the mobile internet is so bad that sometimes it's better to use the off-line tools. Wish you well and thanks again for your tool and time.
