My new dream theater underway

Hello all,

It has been quite a while since I’ve been on here. So thank you in advance.
I’m currently having my dream home theater being built. It is no where prefect but it will get there.
I’ll provide more details spec on my System tomorrow.

My pressing question is are kaleidescape system worth the money hooking up to a premium system. I will have a Sony 4K laser projector with a very screen?
I was get the pressure that kaleidescape system will be raising prices on July 1st.

Thanks,

More details to come tomorrow

Why not DIY with either Plex or Kodi on a nVidia Shield , and a NAS on the back end, such as a Synology or QNAP? Why pay for a premium for the same functionality?

I'm not an expert, but I think sirjaymz is right. You could have all your movies on a NAS and run everything through an NVIDA Shield for the same functionality, or build a HTPC and run everything through MadVR for the best 4K up-scaling I'm aware of.

I run Plex and Emby myself and I couldn't agree more. Kaleidescape is very much an unnecessary spend unless you just have money to burn.

I have Kaleidescape in my theater (Strato and Terra server) and the interface, ease of use and feature set is awesome. Even my wife and scroll through the movies and play one :D!

Is it worth the money? Probably not.

Some cool features of K are (besides the cool user interface):

1. Preset demo chapters that allow you to directly access certain scenes on any given movie you select to play. For example, select 'Ready Player One and with the 'Play Movie' option is 5-6 demo scenes for quick, direct access.
2. They preprogram in movie aspect ratio so screen masking automatically moves to fit picture.
3. No trailers or FBI warnings at all - go right to the movie if you like.
5. You can cut and paste your own demo clips from any movie you have into a demo file.
6. Can select movie by genre, director, film type (comedy, thriller, etc)
7. Download times are 15 minutes to an hour depending on speed of internet
8. Interface is easy to use and nice looking.

For reference, numbers 3, 5, 6 and 8 are commonplace for Kodi and presumably Plex (I haven't messed with Plex).

Ripping your own disc to store in NAS or unraid or whatever isn't overly complicated.

Not sure about the demo chapter markers. That sounds pretty cool. And I don't know if Kodi has a plug-in for aspect ratio to control masking. From my experience it has handled aspect ratios very well, but I haven't needed to control masking with it so haven't gone searching for that answer.

Just for a superficial comparison of features.

BTW... what happened to #4 ? :)

Hmmm.... Forgot #4 .

#4 All purchases are stored at K in case of a hard drive and back up catastrophe :D! Just re-download - hows that for an ad-lib?!

Honestly the only somewhat unique feature(s) you mentioned is the preset demo chapters and also the masking.

Everything else Plex/Emby/Kodi do. And they do it for free and not for several thousands of dollars. And Plex and Emby have great looking User Interfaces and Kodi you can skin to look however you want.

Plex and Emby also allow you to be able to remote play your library from outside your home.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a value purchase. No way!

It’s just convenient to acquire movies (download - no ripping, etc) and the I ser interface is second to none.

That’s why I purchased all ‘used’. :D

Go Minnesota Wild!

Just to add to the discussion, I bought a QNAP server and spent this winter ripping my entire movie collection. It took quite a while, but I'm quite pleased with the result. I love being able to stream my movie collection to any TV in the house through Plex. For my dedicated movie room, I use the Oppo 203 as my "front end" for streaming the movies rather than a Nvidia Shield. It doesn't have the pretty interface, but most importantly it can play ripped UHD blu-rays with full Dolby Vision and Atmos support. Ripping the UHD blu-rays was somewhat difficult because it required downgrading the firmware on my computer blu-ray drive first, but after that it was easy. Anyway, it all works great and I'm happy I went that route.

That is my biggest Kscape, they can't rip UHD disc on their current system. I have around 50 to 75 UHD already in my collection I will not re-buy.
