Home Theater of the Month: Waldo Theater & Flynn's Arcade

This month's entry is a theme theater with a connected arcade: Waldo's and Flynn's Arcade. Congratulations to Jameson Shaw, that looks like a really sweet entertainment complex!

"Jameson Shaw is a huge fan of the Tron movie series. So much so that he teamed up with Shawn Byrne of Quest Acoustical Interiors to build both a home theater and an arcade modeled after the movie's look and feel, with rustic touches taken from the surrounding town of Evergreen, CO. Alongside Adam Pelz of Bespoke Cinema and Steve Kujala of Heartwood Custom Interior Finishes, Byrne took Shaw's retro-meets-modern dreams and made them a reality."

Pretty cool except the carpet in the HT room is to me quite ugly and to busy for my taste. The game room is killer.

This guy put a Barco almost commercial grade projector in his theater. I have a new hero.

Fantastic. I would love to see more photos including the front of the theater (screen side).

What was the total cost?
$450,000.

Beautiful theater and love the theme having grown up in the 80's and playing TRON. That aside, for $450K!!! he got shortchanged on most of the equipment list (Barco projector is fantastic!). Marantz 8805, only 2 Seaton subs where 4 would clearly benefit, 7.1.4 instead of 9.1.6, Triad gold instead of Platinum for front stage. Clearly most of the money went into the construction cost. Sorry to sound so cynical, but half a million dollars is a lot of money to spend and one cannot help but wonder in 6 months of planning how the budget was allocated.

Unless one has truly unlimited funds (or close to it - think of the Rob Hahn theater), there is always a balance between form and function. I happen to lean very strong (>95%) to the function side since for 99+% of the time I'm in the theater, the "lights are off". But for those who want a better "lights on" experience, more money needs to go to the form side. There is no "right" or "wrong", just personal preference. I have no doubt that both the audio (calibrated by Adam Pelz) and the video are outstanding in his theater and I'm sure the family gets great pleasure each time they use it.

Great looking theater, but it doesn't look much like a TRON theater/Flynn's game room to me.. A lot of missed opportunities in the design and for $450,000 I would be very disappointed, then again, it's not my house and the owner obviously ok'ed the design..

Why do so many fellow AV enthusiasts always have to be so quick to say they would have expected more for the money. No wonder so few people ever nominate their own theater

Not more, but better Tron/Flynn design..

I know he paid a premium for "experts" to lay out the room, GCs, laborers and depending on where in CO he is and the access to his home, he could have paid a premium to have materials delivered..

Does anyone ever think that this person will look through this thread and read the comments. Many of the designers and HT consultants and construction specialists are also forum members. Over half the comments are negative. How would you feel? My grandmother always said the time to provide comments about her cooking was while she was preparing it if we thought we could do better. Once the food was on the plate it was time to eat and be grateful for a hot meal.

Not to mention speciality contractors to spend 6+ weeks there.

Yes the client ok’d the design. We thought about more “circuitry” feel in the theater, even considered the Tron game grid, but this is the direction the client and I agreed on. Helps to know a little bit more than the information or title portrays. However, we did try to provide the look and feel of Flynn’s arcade, and 80’s feel, automatic door, etc. Since then, we actually designed a theater with a very “circuitry” on the wall feel. Thanks for looking!
