After finishing my sound system it was time to start a new project, a new home for my htm’s behind a AT screen but there was one catch. My wife said I was not allowed to build anything more into my room that will attach to any wall, you see I already had a 120” motorized screen that will stay in the house when and if we sell. I’ve been thinking about this project for a while now and this is what I came up with.

The design goal I started with is 135” spandex screen and room enough room for my MBM’s under each htm. After buying all of my supplies i only spent roughly +/- $300. And to top it off, it only took me three days to complete with the help of my family.

I started off with dual 2x4 sub frames mostly because my tile floor was not so flat, I do believe this was a good choice. You’ll also notice that my MBM’s won’t fit, more on That soon.

I also added rubber isolators to the bottom to help with the uneven floor. I’m not sure of the durometer but they are pretty hard.

At this point I was really wanting to do a baffle box/wall for all the htm’s so I started to enclose everything in except @Erich H talked me out of it for simplicity and just doing what works.

My next problem was turning 6cuft 35hz boxes into 4cuft 44hz boxes for my pa460’s. I’m going to build a third box for my center at a later date, I’m just running the pa’s form 60hz to 150hz along with my htm running from 60hz to 20k. I’m not exactly sure if this is good or bad but for now it works.

At this point I wired the top with some eye hooks and coupled this to my wall (the only thing touching any wall) so it doesn’t fall forward.

So, instead of paint I decided to do felt fabric ($40 dollars worth) to the entire structure and staple it on. This also helped with some resonance of the wood as well.

Because I fabric covered the front I had to load my MBM’s from the back, which is not a big deal to me. The ports have to fire through the felt and the screen so I’m sure shaking the felt is not going to be a major issue, fingers crossed.
The insulation is R30 ($45 for a batt) but worked great as it was the same 12inches thick as my entire structure.

Entertainment center finished.

Screen time. Just a typical 1x4 frame and white over black spandex from spandex world. I did used eye hooks for my mounting though, I just pounded a couple of finishing nails into the edge and dropped all four eye hooks over them, gravity will keep my screen from falling off.

Three (actually two) days of work completed.

Step 3..... Time to enjoy

Project difficulty I give this a 7

You don’t need to do a lot of detail work but there is still a lot to do.

Coolness factor is a 9

You get to put all the speakers behind a screen and you don’t need to put any holes into any wall, floor, or ceiling. This would be a great idea for apartment dwellers.

Well done. Enjoyed the pics of your progress. Is that a Tuba sub in one of your pics? If so, how does it compare to other subs you have heard?

That is a devastator loaded with a pa460. By far my favorite sub I’ve owned but big boxes are not for everybody.

It is incredibly loud and really clean, I also have another in the other rear corner too. My dual F20 horns are behind the black grille cloth in the front left wall of my room. The four of them blend quite well together and produce an incredible amount of bass. The Boss platform and new seating is really all I have left to upgrade.
This Xmas will be my two year date from when I first started this room with nothing rolled over except wires..... whew.
