Home Theater of the Month: The Beast, Unleashed

Somewhere in Southern Maryland, in the home of systems engineer Matthew Blair, lurks The Beast, Unleashed. Fortunately, this beast is just the name of a fantastic home theater and nothing dangerous. Unless of course you consider the fact that the beast will easily ensnare you with its phenomenal looks, amazing sound, and incredible attention to detail.

Well deserved! Gorgeous build and powerhouse equipment.

I salute our Immersion professionals: Curt Hoyt to which I am very thankful for positioning my JBL loudspeakers correctly to achieve a very tight bubble and the greatly missed Peter CINERAMAX whose fearless R&D in PRO-RIBBON cinemas, curation of most immersive Kaleidescape scripts and forging ahead to 55 loudspeaker Crystal Led Cinemas will pave the road ahead. And Adam Pelz for bringing the system to jawdropping life!

Congrats to the HToM.

Good choice with the Nvidia Shield TV. Are you running Kodi, SPMC, MrMC or Plex for your ripped media?

Thanks so much! I’ll have you know that your curved steps were an inspiration!!! You are very, very welcome to come to the next G2G, which I’m hoping to pull off this year. I have tons of content that I plan to create demo clips for!!!

Thank you! The screen is literally floor to ceiling, with about an inch or so clearance above and below the screen frame. Yeah man, I was inspired to do a cost breakdown by @damelon who did an outstanding price breakdown for his theater down to the cent (based on actual receipts).

Thanks a bunch, man! Oh yeah—the Shield is the one-stop-shop. I’m using PLEX! Love everything about it...my wife loves the interface.

It was a fun project, there aren't many guys who would look at a furnace and say. "Well, we will just have to move it" Congratulations, hope you are enjoying it.

Recognition has been long overdue, and congrats. The information that you shared along the way has helped many (myself included) in making different choices with regard to our own projects. Did you ever finish with the room treatments and pro calibration? Is a Trinnov or Storm Audio in the future for the Beast?

Wow, to impact other projects is a huge and humbling thing to be a part of. Thank you! So, I have something coming up that is going to require a recalibration—I’m moving my rear four subs from behind the seating to behind the rear-wall fabric panels, making all subs truly invisible. Timeline is Feb/March on the sub move—after that, going to get the pro calibration done, and then hold another G2G in the summer.

With the Qsys DSP, I’m having a hard time justifying the Trinnov.....but I’m definitely not opposed to it. But there are so many other things I have that are higher on the priority list (paying off our mortgage in the next 5 years is the current “push” so I doubt I’ll be pursuing Trinnov at its current price point. Now Storm.....maybbeeeee, if I can experience an installation that makes me say “yup. This is better than the QSC stack”

That's pretty incredible, but two things really stuck out to me. First, the obvious, no discs? What if a friend comes over with a disc, or you get content only available on disc? I assume you've ripped your own discs, but that's pretty labor intensive if you want to see something once. The second, while the sound-proofing is really impressive in it's own right, it seems like the brute force method to dealing with HVAC noise from crappy HVAC equipment, versus getting decent HVAC equipment that doesn't make much noise in the first place.

Gracias! In the last few years, I've only had one person bring a disc over... Very few of my friends are actually into movies, and those that are come over for movie nights that I hold where the movie is already pre-selelected.

Backing up movies is only labor-intensive if trying to backup an entire collection. But when every disk is backed up immediately upon purchase, then it's really just a few minutes to get the process going and then walking away. if I want to watch a movie on a once, then I'll rent it in 4k/Atmos on Vudu, which I used to do even when I had a player in the rack.

The HVAC had to be moved because it was right in the middle of where I wanted the room to be. The mechanicals closet was literally where the left riser steps are now.

Matt: A great theater built by a great guy. This award is most certainly not a surprise, given the blood, sweat and tears and the final outcome. Triad Platinum LCRs, JVC Projector, 8 Seaton F18 subs, Lumagen Radiance Pro - that combination is tough to beat.

Congrats!!!! Well deserved.

Here is what I am comfortable with: Either the Trinnov (Room Optimizer) or possibly the Storm (Dirac) will provide better overall envelopment (Qsys notwithstanding). So if the Trinnov is off the table (love your idea to pay off your mortgage), then get the Storm prior to Adam (or whomever) comes to calibrate your room. I promise BOTH of those (Dirac + Adam) will be worth the expense. Check with Adam on this and get his recommendation.
