Home Theater of the Month: Steve’s First Dedicated Theater

Steve Callas is an operations manager for a manufacturing facility, though in his spare time he’s clearly a home theater fanatic. Callas built a home theater for well under the cost of the ones we normally feature, with the added bonus of being easily moveable. Or as Steve puts it, “I knew this would not be my end all, be all.”

Congrats Steve!

Well deserved and beautifully appointed theater. Such a welcoming calm....looking out the windows into space. I can only imagine reclining and looking up into the stars enjoying the peace and quiet. Then, when the movie starts, being immersed in visual glory with the large screen presentation and added sense of realism as every ripple of bass takes control of your body. Two big thumbs up!

Looks fantastic, Steve! Does the fact that none of the seats are dead center cause any issues? I'm assuming based on your well thought-out setup that it doesn't......

While I have no doubt that both the audio and video are top notch, I really appreciate that you were able to put such a fine space together for $26,000. Congrats and well deserved award.

Steve,

A great theater at any cost...but for 26k that is simply genius. It looks like it's 3 times that amount. Very, very well done!

@Utopianemo Center seat gives the best stereo imaging, but off center seat gives the best overall FR, especially with bass, in my room. So it’s a tradeoff - I really wanted to use these big recliners, and i couldn’t fit 3 across, so i went with the better FR.

Some gear is better than others, but great gear doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I’ll still put these Boston VR3s up against anything =D

Very cool and a lot more modest then some of the other 100K rooms they usually feature. That ceiling is awesome!

Congrats Steve! I for sure would love to hear what the VR3's are capable of in a dedicated setting. I love my old Boston VR965's as well and know that it will take much more money on some speakers and some power to better them.

@SteveCallas , nice room. Which high gain AT Screen are you using? JVC is for sure an awesome projector specially when coupled with a nice bright AT screen.

@harrisu I actually found that i didn’t care for the screen materials made as high gain. They were too sparkly for my taste. Screen Innovation Maestro material was like an ultra bright white, it probably had decent gain and looked very nice, but I ended up with a neutral gain Silver Ticket

What's the gain on neutral gain Sliver Ticket? Yeah you are spot on about the sparkly effects. The one that I ended up keeping for myself is Severtson Microperf with 1.3 gain. Even 1.5 was showing sparkles but 1.3 is very neutral. I don't see any material effect on it and been using it for over a year now. Even sitting 9.5' away and no issues .

Seems like screen questions coming up in here and my theater thread, so I figured I’d find the High Gain AT thread with my testing impressions. Looks like it starts here:
