How much Have You Spent on Your Current Dedicated Home Theater?

Putting together a dedicated home theater is no trivial endeavor. Even at the very entry-level, and investment needs to be made in a projector plus screen (or a very large TV) l, plus a surround-sound system and furniture… and that's at the absolute minimum.

Painting the room Black, adding risers, including acoustical treatments and other upgrades add to the expense. And once you get into themes theaters, adding a bar, building a sealed entry door, maybe attic enclosure for the projector… and that's before we get into fundamentals, such as whether you start from scratch and build the actual structure with a dedicated theater in mind… there's practically no limit to how far you can go to optimize a theater, beginning with the foundation or floor. if you want a screening room that would make a Hollywood a-list director or photography proud, even that is doable..

Here on AVS Forum, home theater is the focus. From DIY to pie in the sky, this forum has it all. Indeed, over the years this community has influenced the home theater industry itself in numerous ways. Which is why we are now curious as to how much you have invested in your current dedicated home theater.

The flooring in my open concept basement theater was 12k due to WAF. Not what I wanted to spend.

How much Have You Spent on Your Dedicated Home Theater?

I spent about $8k. This includes:

1. Epson 3800 home cinema projector
2. Denon 4400h receiver
3. Klipsch r112sw subwoofer
4. JBL studio 590s for lcr
5. JBL audio 580s for surrounds
6. Panasonic UHD 420 player
7. Logitech elite
8. Theater seating
9. Spandex for screen and panels
10. Wood for the construction

I am not including cost of carpet, drywall, electrical and painting since the room would in any case need to have been finished in the basement.

How much Have You Spent on Your Dedicated Home Theater?

Update:
Probably about $18k current expense. If I had purchased everything new/full price, it would likely be closer to $40k or more. I love a bargain.

Over the years I’m probably up to $20-25K. That’s piecing things together, started with a lot of equipment I already had, etc.

I will need to wait and see. So far the building (addition) has been 100K because I built it myself, it's still not finished but in all fairness, it's a garage as well. I will certainly update this once i'm finished.

That's a gray area, you can estimate what the added cost of that room is and include it, yes... if you otherwise would not have spent the money, then it counts toward the dedicated theater.

Good point. To clarify, I added the word "current" to the OP. I'm interested in what the current room/system costs, not lifetime total.

I think I’m at around $35k for my room and everything included that was specific to the theater (Cloverdale Cinema), including the soundproofing ($5k), lighting, ($1k), carpet($2k), speakers ($8k), projector ($8k), screen wall and screen ($500), furniture ($4k), rack, processing and power ($3.5k).

Important to note that I painted the space myself (saved $1k), pulled all my own speaker and romex wire, and did a bunch of other related tasks. My wife (an Interior Designer) did the colors and decor. Theater design was courtesy of the fine folks on AVS.

If I had outsourced everything, I expect I would have been another $10k?

$30,174 to date. My budget was $30K and I don't expect to many more expenses so with the marque, front row BOSS, and digital movie poster builds still yet to complete, but some components purchased, i'll be at about $31K. That includes every dime from bare room to completed fully soundproofed and complete theater. Including construction materials, soundproofing, HAVC, finishes, equipment, seating, lighting, screen etc. As well as the three jobs I paid others to do consulting, carpet install, and taping. I am very happy with how the budget worked out and feel although some things were over budget I was able to keep some things under budget. I also feel like the research I did prior and the consultant I have used during the build were both huge reasons why I came in close to budget.

Now as far as timing I wasn't even in the right atmosphere...I planned on 6 months (for the entire basement) i'm on month 18 and counting .

I think you needed to add a few lower categories dollar ranges.

HT IMHO should be inclusive to everyone and at all price points. Enjoyment is the end goal and my hope is to not discourage anyone looking here to live the dream.

Here is my roundup.

We bought this 1860s Victorian house on short sale for $24K. We put a year of sweat equity into it along with another $15k of reclaimed, repurposed and salvaged materials. There was a parlor room 11x14 off the living room that was deemed the location of our 4 seat single row Front projection home theater / media entertainment room. 100% external light proof, with dark light absorbing interior finish.

Room cost $200

Projector Viewsonic Pro-7827-HD 1080p DLP close out special $499

Mount system DIY CIH+IMAX manual zoom using Chief components $100

Screen DIY stealth painted ND gray .5 gain $25

Used Onkyo AVR 5.1 prior to HDMI $50

Sony BD player with streaming capabilities $79

OTA Homeworx tuner box $34

Attic antenna Free no one wants OTA any more 16 1080 network channels the way God intended TV to be.

Used Carver amp for subs $100

Front LR mains DIY $300

Phantom center $0

Rears LR Pioneer mains garage sale $30

Subs two DIY 12” ported $250

A/B switch for audio selection do to lack of HDMI pass thru $10

HTPC option Toshiba laptop $375

Cables and misc. $200

Grand total $2,252 plus labor “priceless” as it’s a hobby.

We sit on our old 4 seat leather reclining sofa watching Netflix, Amazon, OTA TV, BD and DVD and anything we surf to on the HTPC worth watching large. We do RedBox rentals and have really slowed down on buying media over the last year or two.

Internet and streaming services Cost us about $100 per month or $3 a day. That’s a small price for all the amazing entertainment we get.

I won’t win HT of the month anytime soon but that was never a goal. But when the lights go out my vision is totally filled and the total AV experience is much better than our best local cinema. We can seat 2 couples and squeeze in a few kids if we have to. Popcorn is every bit as good.

It can be done on a shoestring budget.

15k ?? But I started from zero and got it wrong before I got it right.

3k - junk store bought speakers I had to replace with diy. This also includes the motorized screen I no longer use because it is too small. Wasted money.

3k - new speakers from the DIY sound group. Best thing I ever done, seriously.

5k - All new electronics top to bottom with 4 amps Xbox and harmony remote and on, and on.....

1k - in wood just for the many successful and fails in subwoofer box building. Some expensive bonfires too (no speakers were hurt in the heated exchange). This will include everything for the room.

1k in earplugs for my family so I could learn REW and find the many different locations to best place my subwoofers. (Just move it 3 inches and I will try it again....).

2k in the lost wages of life when I got it so right that I locked myself in the room for a month so I could enjoy it. This also includes the counseling for the withdrawals from the AVS forum and the DIY section...... DO NOT go to the DIY section!!!!

Damn, I am here.

Honestly if the middle of Minnesota is anything like living on the great lakes, I have 4-5 months a year if I didn’t have the HT I would go crazy.
