Finally our home theater is underway! I have always wanted a dedicated theater. Now I get the chance. My wife and I were fortunate enough to build a new home, and while she was looking at plans to see how the kitchen, master bedroom, ect., was laid out, the first thing I wanted to see was the basement and how the theater layout would be :0). We found the floor plan we both like, and our house is beautiful. So I finally get to start our home theater!!

I am so grateful to the amazing people here on AVS. Some of the theaters that you see here are simply amazing! I always knew the basic layout, equipment, ect I wanted (again, thanks to all the amazing ideas and minds here) but could never really nail down a theme for the room. Well last October we were in Disneyland riding Pirates of the Carribean, and that is when it just hit me. I have always loved that ride as a kid. It has a feel that nothing else can bring. I know some of you may think It is weird, but that is the feeling I would like to have in the theater. I would like to have some elements from the movies (this is a movie theater after all) but mostly from the ride. Some ideas we wanted to create are: first, we wanted to have scenes from the ride and the movie. I decided to have arches on each side of the theater where we cold have an artist come and paint some murals in them. Then we want to create an outside feeling. Kind of like when you first get on the ride you feel like you are floating down the bayou at night. So I want to have a star field in the ceiling and have some pants, moss, etc. to try to recreate that somehow.

The room is in the basement. It is about 16'x37'x8'. I want to have a theater and a lobby in this space. So the theater is about 16x27 and the rest is the lobby. There was a window on the plans for the room where the theater is, but I convinced them to get rid of it (no easy task). There is one window in the lobby area. I am going to get some pics up soon.

So far I have the framing, wiring, and some of the Sheetrock. I am in a race with our first born! He is due at the end of November and I have been given the ultimatum to have it done by then. I have the arches done and ready to paint I just need to give the artist some ideas on which scenes from the ride and the movie to paint. We are thinking about 2 arches for the movie and the other 4 for the ride. Anyway I feel I have rambled along. Please any ideas comments are more then welcome!

Pants are good, but don't underestimate the intimidation factor of a kilt and a cutlass.

pkonold,

I have a cool idea for you! Go to http://www.charactersunlimitedinc.com/ and check out their stuff. You could probably have them build you a skull and crossbones just like on the ride. Then, you could talk to Mark Bortz at http://www.premiercompanies.com/ about the voiceover for the skull and crossbones.
Characters Unlimited does the actual fabrication etc. of whatever you'd want and make it so it'll move it's mouth etc. with a voiceover. Premiere Company finds a voice talent that'll match the voice you'd want for the thing.

Anyway, you could put that at the entrance or just inside of the theater room and have it set on a sensor (like a garage door sensor) that'll make it come on as people enter the room. Of course, you'd have to find out exactly what the skull is saying on the ride though which I can't remember off the top of my head.

But great idea! I love Pirates as well!!!

Good luck,

Bimmeup

Ok, while we are being creative...how about making the theater feel like you are inside of a boat? Wood beams, fake port holes, rope, nets, maybe a canon. Just a thought.

I like it! I can totally see that working too! Even if you didn't want to go all out with actual wood beams, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to fake it somehow. The more I think about this, the more I think I'd like to try it myself! Now to convince the wife...

Watch for Home Theatre 2.0 pics coming soon!

How amazing would that be? We did buy a collector skull and crossbones from disney. It looks just the one on the ride right before you take the first plunge! I will try and great a pic up.

We actually threw this idea around a little, I even thought to have the front of the theater be a boat and the screen would be the mast of the ship! Excellent ideas! Keep em coming mates!

Good luck with the theater! Sounds like a fun idea.

Here's a link to the script for the entire ride (talking skull script is about one third down.).

There are also hundreds of sites you can scour for DIY Halloween animatronics, from the simple to the complex. One quick search produced this site:

Talking skull

Can't wait to see pics!

Here are some pics:

This is of the room before any construction:

As you can see I had a hvac duct to box in, but I like the sofit look.

This is after a little bit of framing:

You can see how I am going to to the arches in this pic.

More to follow

pkonold - good luck with your build. I will be following along. I too like the pirates theme and am building a theater named after a very famous pirate ship. Where are you located? If it is anywhere close to Savannah, PM me and I will give you the name of a guy that can get you authentic nautical relics if you are interested.

pkonold,

Another couple of thoughts for you. I was thinking that the theater seats could actually be inside of a boat! So everyone has to board the boat (which has the seats in them) before the show begins. You could have entry from both sides etc.

Another thought regarding your ceiling would be to have stars come on when all the lights go out and the show begins, but before when some of the lights are still on, to have some sort of lighting system that makes it look as though clouds are rolling along in the sky! I'm sure there are some special effect lighting systems like dj's use in dance clubs that could do this!

And as a last thought, you could have the skeleton with the ships wheel at the front corner of the theater. He's the one you see on the ride with the blowing wind!

Anyhow, just a few more thoughts.

pkonold,

Those arches are going to look great! You could almost have a professional painter come and do some of the scenes from the ride in each one of those arched niche areas!

Just another thought! It's definately going to be a cool theater when it's done.

Wow! This is sooo cool! As soon as you said the pirates of the carribean from Disney I immediately pictured the bayou part and could hear the crickets and water and everything -- that'll be sweet!! Can't wait to see it, you're definitely on my subscribe list -- keep those updates coming

Good luck,
Mike

PS. A theater place in town used thin strips of wood to recreate the look of beams in the ceiling (I think they just used 1/2" baltic birch ply or something and mitered the joints so that you couldn't see the plys and after staining and finishing them they look like HUGE beams!!). Definitely need the cricket sound on some sort of IR eye beam sensor thingee (like when you walk in a store at the mall and it goes "ding" -- instead yours would go "" ).

Great thread!! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Any ideas for the stage area? How about making the stage look like a quarterdeck and then putting a big ships wheel in the center of the stage. You could mount it to a powered hinge which lowers the wheel to the ground when the movie starts.

I have nothing to offer othar than this sounds like a great project, my wife is a big Disney fan and I have a small collection of props from the Films in my HT room, so best of luck to you and I look forward to following your progress...

I whipped this up after reading the OP...as this is what came to mind

You might have a look at the online Disney shop. They sell all kinds of Pirate memorablia.
In Orlando they have small (on a stick) and large POTC flags, but they are not in the online shop unfortunately...

Build is looking good so far, and i really like the theme!
