Is 3D really dead?

Doesn't mean you can't pick up a few glasses if you have a 3D TV. There are plenty of 3D bluray movies available, but not many are sold locally these days. Mostly have to go to Amazon. And yes, 3D TVs are no longer made except a few very expensive ones, and I think these are no out of production as well. There are a lot of 3D projectors still being sold, though. You won't find much if any commercial TV/Cable 3D stuff anymore for sure. And of course the shift to 4K has pushed studios to abandon 3D movies for home use and produce mostly 4K media now.

Were there specific 3D movies you wanted to watch? There are whole threads dedicated to 3D movies here.

Edit: You won't find glasses sold locally these days, but still available on Amazon as well.

No, I was actually looking for a 3D simulator for remote control helicopters and that's where I was told that it was not likely anyone would bother to make one. They are all headed down the VR/AR path. I will likely pick up some glasses and movies while I still can. It's too bad the industry is going south because I still find the whole concept really cool. I guess I will have to wait for holographic projection to be the norm.

Makes sense, since people will either have a standard monitor or if they wanted to do immersion do it using VR which is extremely well supported these days.

Though that reminds me I probably should upgrade my RC sim. Last time I looked into software upgrades I got horrendously confused because the controllers may or may not be compatible. That and all the addons may or may not be compatible.

My LG 3D tv stopped making sound today. It has served me many years. It still shows a decent 1080p picture but I can't get the sound to work. So now I've gotta buy a new tv, luckily it's Black Friday and there are tv sales galore but obviously none of them do 3D.
I've looking online to try and find a new (old) 3D tv but the ones listed are EXPENSIVE on eBay.

Just have to keep reminding everyone that 3D is not dying off, rather it is evolving.

The evolution was side by side viewmaster like stills to movies with anaglyph to frame packed TV.

Recently the best and most natural 3D I experience is with Oculus Quest. There is a ton of content and more every day. The earlier Oculus Rift has more content but is limited to a tethered to powerful computer to work. The image resolution is getting even better and 3D cameras now supporting 6K resolution. This 3D is considered virtual reality with both 180° and 360° viewing. No more through the window with popout effects. Instead, the entire scene is like you are really there.

I still do watch old fashion 3D 2K Blu Ray movies, but most of my shooting these days is with 3D VR180 6K cameras. Plus, I spend most of my viewing of 3D now with the Quest as there is just so much content available for free.

A new 3D VR content now is interactive stories. Not only are you in a virtual world of the story, you can interact and direct the story as well. Artificial intelligence response using voice recognition is a fascinating new evolution to the older basic 3D. These are considered games but still fun to participate.

While 3D filming and 2K 3D never really caught on in the porn business, porn in VR 3D has skyrocketed and is the fastest growing branch of 3D with hundreds of new content added daily on specific websites. Porn was what made VHS a success in the 80's.

If the OP is still looking into playing a RC heli simulator in Nvidia 3d vision, I can say that the helix mod shader hacker community for 3d vision is still quite active on this forum:
https://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=181

Published 3D mods are on this site:
http://helixmod.blogspot.com/

There are universal fixes for Unreal Engine 4 and Unity, that can get you 99% the way there.

The latest Nvidia drivers can be patched to support 3d vision, you don't need to run old drivers for 3d.

A point of interest, I have been watching some incredible 3D movies like Avatar and Martian and although they are not labeled as 4K UHD, they seem to have very good resolution. I saw earlier someone said 2K. Is that what they are? I had a friend over last night watching with me and he was blown away by the detail. He said his 4K TV was not even close but I suspect my larger screen had something to do with it. They do look awesome!

They're FHD (1920x1080) so not quite 2K (DCI 2K = 2048x1080). However they get 2 frame packed FHD images sent to implement 3D viewing. With 3D the second view is generated from difference data from the first 2D image so if you maximised the quality in the difference data you would expect to generally perceive the 3D movie to be higher quality/resolution over a 2D movie. (That's assuming both are using the same base 2D image data at the same or very similar bitrates).

Also it depends on which Ultra HD 4K movie you're watching. Quite a lot of 4K releases are really upscaled FHD (or 2K) releases that have been enhanced with HDR (of some form) and/or better audio. So you would only get marginal improvement in quality unless you got a Ultra HD disc that was recorded/mastered in 4K or greater resolution. See https://4kmedia.org/real-or-fake-4k/ for a list.

I was a huge naysayer on 3D when it came out and passed it off as some gimmick. A few months ago I finally upgraded to a 3D projector with DLP link technology and never thought I would even use it. Then the day came where I made a stroll through the local rental store and came across a bunch of 3D Blurays for sale at a whopping 2 for $3 as they were clearing out their inventory. I picked up almost all of then and while most are the type I wouldn't even pick just on the movie/plot alone, I did get a fair share of Marvel and DC flicks. A pair of 3D glasses later and a showing of Captain America: The First Avenger I was hooked and driving all around my area to the other movie rental outlets cleaning house on their inventory of 3D Blurays. Even in 1080p I was blown away by the experience and have been bitten by the 3D bug. I do hope for a sort of rennaisance on 3D support and look forward to see how it pans out and if not, there's still a back catalog of titles that'll keep me busy for quite some time.

I was never really a naysayer per se since I really enjoyed the Disney 3D rides, but it was not a real factor when I bought my projector and it was more of a whim that I bought the emitter and glasses this year. I have definitely been pleasantly surprised.
