Is 3D really dead?

Geesh, I was just ready to pick up a few pairs of glasses this Christmas to use with my JVC and someone sent me this article. What do you guys think?

Doesn't mean you can't pick up a few glasses if you have a 3D TV. There are plenty of 3D bluray movies available, but not many are sold locally these days. Mostly have to go to Amazon. And yes, 3D TVs are no longer made except a few very expensive ones, and I think these are no out of production as well. There are a lot of 3D projectors still being sold, though. You won't find much if any commercial TV/Cable 3D stuff anymore for sure. And of course the shift to 4K has pushed studios to abandon 3D movies for home use and produce mostly 4K media now.

Were there specific 3D movies you wanted to watch? There are whole threads dedicated to 3D movies here.

Edit: You won't find glasses sold locally these days, but still available on Amazon as well.

No, I was actually looking for a 3D simulator for remote control helicopters and that's where I was told that it was not likely anyone would bother to make one. They are all headed down the VR/AR path. I will likely pick up some glasses and movies while I still can. It's too bad the industry is going south because I still find the whole concept really cool. I guess I will have to wait for holographic projection to be the norm.

Nvidia with ending support for 3D with the 425.31 driver made 3DtvPlay free.
Not sure what specific game or simulation are using, but there are a lot of supported games.
There is other software that support games, and community updates for various games.

I hadn't really intended to play any games. I would likely hurl, lol.
Flying helis is kind of a niche hobby so there are only really a few vendors making simulators so I don't expect to see anything from them now.
I'm still intrigued with the movie idea though.
Any recommendations for equipment to use with my JVC?

By equipment you mean 3D glasses? There are a few threads with recommendations.

Yes, and whatever else I need. I'm not on this forum much. Can you point me there?

Thanks

As to how to use a software in 3D i'm not so sure.
What is the simulator called? What OS is it on?
Do you have a PC? What GPU?

Thanks for the links. That is what I needed. Don't worry about the simulator part. I'll work that through the heli forums. Its likely unobtainium though due to the limited volume of people wanting it.

If the GPU is Nvidia the Geforce forums still has an active 3D community.

Thanks, but the problem is on the heli simulator side. There are only a few and they don't support it and don't plan to. They are putting their time into standard monitors and VR/AR.

Makes sense, since people will either have a standard monitor or if they wanted to do immersion do it using VR which is extremely well supported these days.

Though that reminds me I probably should upgrade my RC sim. Last time I looked into software upgrades I got horrendously confused because the controllers may or may not be compatible. That and all the addons may or may not be compatible.

Hi 3DBob! My NVidia 1050TI just died. In your opinion, what are the best full 4k graphics cards that do 3D? Still 1050TI, or is there a better alternative? My google searches aren't turning up anything.

Since 3D support by Nvidia is questionable now since they posted they are no longer supporting it, I would stick with what works. If the 1050TI was fast enough for you and worked well, then stick with it. Other reason to stick with it, is that if your PC handles it nicely, and you don't have issues with updates to the latest games (updates can ruin your day on some computer setups with NVidia and different motherboards).

Best place to go is the Nvidia forums. You will find someone with the same issue as yours, typically. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/discover/

Yes, but if you have something that works, trust me, trying another card (AMD vs. Nvidia) might be more problems than it's worth, especially if your PC is already a couple of years old and the old card worked just fine, and you already have the latest release software on the computer for the bad card.

My LG 3D tv stopped making sound today. It has served me many years. It still shows a decent 1080p picture but I can't get the sound to work. So now I've gotta buy a new tv, luckily it's Black Friday and there are tv sales galore but obviously none of them do 3D.
I've looking online to try and find a new (old) 3D tv but the ones listed are EXPENSIVE on eBay.

Just have to keep reminding everyone that 3D is not dying off, rather it is evolving.

The evolution was side by side viewmaster like stills to movies with anaglyph to frame packed TV.

Recently the best and most natural 3D I experience is with Oculus Quest. There is a ton of content and more every day. The earlier Oculus Rift has more content but is limited to a tethered to powerful computer to work. The image resolution is getting even better and 3D cameras now supporting 6K resolution. This 3D is considered virtual reality with both 180° and 360° viewing. No more through the window with popout effects. Instead, the entire scene is like you are really there.

I still do watch old fashion 3D 2K Blu Ray movies, but most of my shooting these days is with 3D VR180 6K cameras. Plus, I spend most of my viewing of 3D now with the Quest as there is just so much content available for free.

A new 3D VR content now is interactive stories. Not only are you in a virtual world of the story, you can interact and direct the story as well. Artificial intelligence response using voice recognition is a fascinating new evolution to the older basic 3D. These are considered games but still fun to participate.

While 3D filming and 2K 3D never really caught on in the porn business, porn in VR 3D has skyrocketed and is the fastest growing branch of 3D with hundreds of new content added daily on specific websites. Porn was what made VHS a success in the 80's.

Might be worth trying to fix it if it's a C6 or testing via ARC, Optical or Line Out to see if it's just the speaker section or the entire audio subsystem that isn't working?

Or just get a sound bar or surround sound setup and keep using your tv. Receivers, speakers and soundbars are all on good sale.

Yow. $69 for me. I'll wait till they come way down. I've been buying 3D disks for like $15 or less for most titles. Good time to buy so called "dead" technology.

My copy was $12.99 Best Buy Black Friday price.
BD, 3DBD, 4KBD, and Digital Copy.
(also no sales tax where I live.)

Edit - Still available at $12.99 ... (for now)

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/alita-b...?skuId=6333206

edit- There's a store near me called Big Lots and for some reason they get the clearance 3DBDs and have a lot for under $5 ... but most of them I already have. I think at last count I had about 120 3DBDs and apart from the fact my 4K copy of Alita came with 3D I haven't been buying them for a long time.

Decent projectors that do 3-D are readily available for as low as $600 or so, and you don't need a fancy install to use them. A white wall will suffice for many. Of course you can spend much more, but you really don't have to.

If the OP is still looking into playing a RC heli simulator in Nvidia 3d vision, I can say that the helix mod shader hacker community for 3d vision is still quite active on this forum:

Published 3D mods are on this site:

There are universal fixes for Unreal Engine 4 and Unity, that can get you 99% the way there.

The latest Nvidia drivers can be patched to support 3d vision, you don't need to run old drivers for 3d.
