The first Atmos Soundbar-Yamaha YSP 5600

Well? I must say I called this over a year ago. And I don't mean to brag. I was actually looking for my post back then..

I just think it's funny. When the home theater atmos rage was beginning I thought the most absolutely inevitable and natural thing with that was The Yamaha YSP sound bars. If the beams could be fired to the side walls and back walls so effectively... why not upwards as well?:

I bet this Will be absolutely superb like all of the YSPs.. Totally dependent on the room and calibration? But by far the easiest and cleanest way to get atmos now:

Yamaha launches YSP-5600, the world's first Dolby Atmos soundbar

Look like the 5100 with tweeters on the sides aiming upwards.

It makes total sense, because Atmos was designed for upward firing modules, since the vast majority of folk won't be able to use ceiling speakers.

I hope someone starts selling Atmos addon soundbars for people with 5.1/7.1 setups. I'd much rather buy a soundbar with 2/4 speaker modules that fire upwards (and thus will get separated in space) vs buying 4 addon modules and connecting them.

Been waiting 2 years for this soundbar to be announced! Knew Yamaha would do it after Atmos became official.

Will finally upgrade from my YSP-2200. Gonna try to get a better sub this time too so looking at a few options. Wish I knew the 5600's frequency range or crossover point but Yamaha never seems to list those specs for their soundbars.

It was mentioned the 5600 would come packaged with the SWK-W16 adapter for wireless sub (or if it will come with a subwoofer as well). Can anyone confirm that?

It only comes with a swk-w16 adapter, but NOT include a subwoofer. You can choose any 3rd party subwoofer anyway

So the ysp-5600 is the upgrade to the ysp-5100, 4100 supporting atmos, and two new decoders, looking forward to seeing it, I assume clients that purchase these such as myself, are 90 % for movies. As everyone, as well s myself, the reproduction of music, needs much to be desired.

Still holding out for the Paradigm Soundscape, but I'm still missing my dearly departed original Yammy YSP-1.

Could the YSP-5600 be a Soundscape killer?

It's gonna be a beast -- at 8-1/2" high, I may have raise my panel. :-(

Looking forward to some reviews.

I think I am going to sit tight (maybe) and wait for the 5600.

Everyone, the professional reviewers, who has heard it at both of the shows in Germany in June and IFS seem to be highly praising it.

Some of the reviewers comments are:

"all the more impressive"

"remarkable precision"

"To say we were impressed would be an understatement."

"excellent job of recreating the film's immersive soundtrack"

"handled the film's marvellous sound design with great skill"

"just incredible, leaving even our jaded mouths open."

it was inevitable I'm wondering if it will do both Atmos/DTS:X. Looks like a beast.

Yes, when it starts selling in Nov./Dec. it will have Atmos.

Then DTS:X will become available via a firmware update.

From the pictures and videos it looks like Yamaha changed and didn't make this YSP in their piano black finish it looks more flat black.

I hope I am seeing the pictures/videos wrong.

Yep, same for me, my YSP-4300 fits under the panel, the YSP-5600 won't. But anyway: I wanted to put the panel on the wall for a while :-)

compare the SONY's flagship HT-ST9 is "Virtual 7.1"

Yamaha's people at IFA said YSP 5600 is "True 7.1 surround"

So i am definitely waiting for this

I think it is $1600 for just the YSP-5600 and $1900 for both the YSP-5600 and the SW300 wireless subwoofer.

Odd,

Granted, audio reviewers always love the latest thing but... let me get this straight

Atmos the bounce off the ceiling type is generally panned by the home theater folks as a poorly executed and rather bogus way of doing Atmos. If you want sound to come from a location, put a speaker in that location way of thinking. Knowing a bit about acoustics and really did not like the reflective Bose 901... I question Yamaha and putting bounce speakers in a sound bar. Sure, they can make a boat load of money but I figured they would make a second sound bar that mounts above the TV (or at the top of the wall between the wall/ceiling junction) that would steer the sound better and could be added to existing sound bars.

Basically, an Atmos sound bar to mount at the wall/ceiling junction and could have an optional Atmos processor that could extract the signal so regular soundbars could be used with it.

Then again, it is just a soundbar so it is targeted to fit it's niche'...

Every professional reviewer that heard it at IFA can't say enough good things about it - despite being skeptical at first.

Here are just two reviews from IFA.

YSP 5600 announce today in japan, release late November, 175,000 YEN ( 1450 USD )

Really good price, even lower than SONY's HT-ST9.

I don't think that most people in the industry think that Atmos using reflection is "bogus" as a previous poster said.

In Atmos theaters, ceiling mounted speakers are much higher and further from the listener than in the home, and therefore are bound to lose some of the directionality that would cue the listener to think "there's a speaker up there," which would undesirable.

I think there's an argument to be made that reflected Atmos might be at least as good as ceiling mounted speakers in optimal environments.
