Nice review Mark! Any chance you can get your hands on Sony's ZA5000ES AVR for review? I love Sony audio but it doesn't come cheap!

Look, my audio history is steeped in ES lore. That's gotta be on my to-do list, to check out a Sony ES AVR. Thank you for the motivation. No promises, fingers crossed.

The sound bar specs sounded good...but you lost me at no DTS decoding. Kind of strange in a super expensive sound bar.

It seems that a lot of soundbars leave out DTS decoding, which is odd, because it's pretty much standard on even the cheapest AVRs. I'm curious as to why that is.

One caveat...

I received my HT-S5000 about 3 weeks ago and I'm very satisfied. It's worth pointing out however, that many on the owners forum report very inconsistent results in reproducing the height channel. After a week of measuring, experimenting and adjusting I simply have no sense of Atmos. I'm keeping the product because I agree with you: the soundfield is remarkable and well worth the price alone.

That's a rabbit hole, for sure. There are myriad reasons why one might wind up struggling, but the main culprit I suspect is a combination of ceiling height and seating distance. The up-firing drivers are set at a fixed angle and if you are too far away from the TV/soundbar, you risk not hearing the reflected sound. That's one of the compromises of only having two Atmos channels, and having them be up front.

So my couch is 5m (16.4ft) from the soundbar and ceiling height is 2,38m (bout 8 ft )will the upper beams reach that distance? because angle need to be quite steep.. Also the bar will stand on a shelve almost 80cm heigh so the distance to the ceiling will be lower

You are not going to get an optimal height effect with that distance/ceiling height ratio.

From what I remember, the Samsung sound bar from last year that was able to do Dolby Atmos also didn't have DTS decoding. In my opinion, if you're going to pay over $1,500 for a sound bar, it needs to have at least the basics.....

I thought so.. I could calculate which angle it need to have and design a sort of ramp. Do you know if the ysp-5600 have the same angle for the upward speakers?

Actually, Samsung added DTS decoding with a firmware update to that soundbar.

My ceiling height is 9 feet and listening distance 12 feet. I tested UHD discs ("John Wick 2" and "Hacksaw Ridge") playing from a Sony UBP-X800. I briefly owned an Onkyo SBT-A500 that reproduced a very convincing Atmos effect but was inferior in every other way to the Sony. I don't wish to re-prosecute the whole HT-S5000 users forum here so I would suggest prospective buyers page through and notice the almost 50/50 split regarding 7.1 performance.

I've moved throughout the room, climbed on ladders and laid on the floor. I simply cannot locate the effect. It's a complete mystery which I invite you to solve.

I've had the S5000 for a month connected to the X1000ES and, for the life of me, I too cannot find the effect. I've reapplied the settings, I've moved my seating position, just not getting it. Also, on it's own, it doesn't sound any better than the speakers on my x930C, thought the sub is decent.

The only reason I haven't returned it already is that I keep reading great reviews which encourages me to keep trying. That AND Crutchfield's terrific 60 day return window.

Only legacy DTS 5.1 though. Previously it could do DTS 2.0. But still DTS 5.1 is what my receivers did over twenty years ago.

Good deal, I look forward to seeing how you think it compares to Samsung's QLED sets. Anyway, sorry for the off topic nature of these questions/comments. Carry on!

Why no pictures of the whole soundbar? I had to Google just to see what it looked like, was confused by the design based on the pics in the review... Should add a couple more pics of the actual unit. Connections, the full soundbar with and without cover. Not even interested in this, but it showed up in my google cards. Just wanted to mention my opinion about the lack of images in the review.

So, I only 1 room for music and movies. What's a simple way to integrate a 2-channel system for music and such a soundbar for movie viewing? I've tried a top-of-line Klipsch soundbar for serious music but it was unlistenable (I have very good ears).

Are you able to use your own subwoofer or does it have to be the included one ? I am rethinking my old speaker setup:

2 x P362 infinity primus tower
1 x c350 infinity primus center
2 x p163 infinity primus bookshelves for surround

I wanted to downsize the towers and give them away, but the Primus line seems to be discontinued and I cannot reliably source additional 163s to fill out the set. Therefore, for the first time in my life I am actually considering a soundbar to streamline things since the C350 center is also very problematic for getting a wife-approved tv stand (I had to build my own to accommodate it).

The only thing is that I can't justify not using my Rythmik LV 12R, so my wishlist is.........

A) for the soundbar to be able to integrate with my Rythmik LV 12R
B) for the soundbar to be compatible with a Receiver (I have too many inputs.. playstation, xbox, bluray player, etc)
C) if B is impossible, the soundbar needs to have HDMI input (i see that some are only Optical input, which is odd ..)
D) Faux 5.1 or higher, since surround speakers are a potential hazard to my baby and her cord-pulling, object-shaking curiosity.

Thank you

Wraith2..please let me know your final review of S5000 sound bar! I also have Sony TV with side speakers (mine is the 65"x900B). I was hoping S500 would be center channel solution...because with family of 5, someone ends up on side, and so vocals are not centered. Much appreciate your conclusion. Thank You, PH, Seattle, WA

Does anyone have this sound bar connected to a Xbox one s? I can't get the atmos to work. I keep getting a message that says to turn off audio pass through. I've tried every setting and even new cables. Totally lost. May swap for the k950. I want this one to work though.

Are you trying to play a bluray disc? Which disc? Are you sure you selected the correct audio track?

Exclamation What tha ?

I usually have a bit of respect for Sony gear but NO DTS or DTS-HD ? I'm also lost to what was going through their mind! Licence fees ? My $160 Yamaha Receiver has DTS & DTS-HD!
