Sony Soundbars at CES 2018

Three new Sony soundbars include two with virtual Dolby Atmos and DTS:X reproduction without ceiling reflection or extra speakers.

It looks like there will be a speaker kit available for the Z9F model.
Quoting in article: The Z9F has a native channel configuration of 3.1, but it can “upmix” 2-channel content to 7.1.2. If you really want physical surround speakers, you can add the SA-Z9R kit.

So it's doesn't sound like there will be a replacement for the ST-5000 based in the price of those new bars

The only thing that bothers me is that it don?t have height speakers. Will it be as immersive as the Samsung? I didn?t go for the first Sony Atmos bar because it was lacking. Will it have that Atmos effect?

Ya, that is a tough one to answer until we hear from people who have heard this. I too have been holding out for an upgrade to the HT-ST5000 but not sure how this will compare. The price does suggest that it might not be as capable but that might not be necessarily true with advancements in sound technology.
I hope these will be awesome but hoping doesn't make it so. Looking forward to seeing the specs though.

I'm kinda disappointed in my st5000 but it is still the best thing out there.

I was hoping we will get near support but Sony doesn't care about that.
I hope we get a soundbar that's truly does atmos and dtsx without costing us arms and legs.

If DTS:X counts, then it does.

Well, I guess so and I read this:

DTS:X Encoding and Backwards Compatibility
DTS:X is backwards compatible with any home theater receiver that incorporates DTS Digital Surround or DTS-HD Master Audio decoders.

In other words, if you play back DTS:X encoded Blu-ray Disc (which can still be played on any Blu-ray Disc or UHD Blu-ray player that has the ability to output a DTS bitstream over HDMI) with a DTS:X compatible receiver, you will be able to access the fully immersive DTS:X encoded soundtrack.

However, even if your receiver does not have a built-in DTS:X decoder, no problem, the bitstream still contains DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS Digital Surround options as well, you just won't get the more immersive listening option that DTS:X provides. You can build your DTS:X Blu-ray Disc collection and pick up a DTS:X compatible receiver on your own timeline.

When HDMI 2.1 appears, maybe next year. Manufacturers are just starting to get the new chips now and they still need some time with these. HDMI 2.1 is going to be a different animal and I predict will have some growing pains.

So how does these new ones compare to HT-ST5000? Are these new models replacing this? From the price the newer ones are so much cheaper. Anyone know why they are so cheap in comparison to the HT-ST5000.

Yeah
And there is absolutely no resale value for these stuff so stuck with it for the near future. One good thing is at least we have three HDMI inputs compared to only two on the new models. But I'm more interested in the improved technology of how it simulates Dolby Atmos.

i feel you.
the sound on the ST5000 is really amazing but we bought it for atmos and DTSX but this thing can't do that
when it does, it's really rarely and if you blink you'd miss it.
idk, this CES has been crap. they announced a bunch of nonsense AI and robots that can barely reply to commands, both sony and samsung just ignored their customers

If you mean "rear" support there is support for 2 wireless rear speakers. They are the SA-Z9R model.

There's already a Yamaha soundbar that simulates Atmos on the market, it gets mediocre reviews at best. These new Sony bars aren't intended to replace the st5000, they are cheaper alternatives.

@4klover A Sony rep in a retail store once told me that Sony doesn't want the st5000 to compete with their own receiver sales, and that is why they won't allow rears. These Sony reps don't always know what they're talking about, but if there were any reason for Sony to not do rears on the st5000 that would be dumb enough for me to believe.

Samsung 75Q9FN
Samsung HW-N950
Samsung UBD-M9500

Here is some actual audio from CES. It might give you a hint of what it is capable of.

From TechRadar's CES awards:

Quote:
Best Audio Accessory – Sony HT-Z9F Soundbar
Sony's latest Dolby Atmos soundbar, the Sony HT-Z9F, brings 4K HDR compatibility to a 3.1 channel system with surround sound through either Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. This is one audio accessory that would seriously upgrade your home theater, and therefore earns this coveted award.
