Sony HT-ST9 subwoofer

I bought a used Sony HT-ST9. it did not come with a subwoofer. I cannot find anywhere the subwoofer model SA-WST9 used that fits with the HT-ST9. Can anybody tell me if I buy a used Sony wireless subwoofer lets say step down model like a Sony CT780, will it pair with the HT-ST9 sound bar if I try? I know I would probably lose some sound quality from the smaller subwoofer, but would it work? Sony tech says no it will not work it has to be paired with the original soundbar, I would expect him to say that but will it really work?

Has anybody ever tried pairing a different model number of subwoofer HT-ST9 and were successful. If not why will it not work. different frequency?

I believe you could probably use a HT-ST7 or 5 sub with it. I have the 9 and 7 and they use the same wireless module.
