Splitting Digital Optical

I want to connect my iLive soundbar to TV by a digital optical for best sound but also want to connect the TV audio to my AV Receiver for best streaming audio. Can I use a splitter to handle this? I don't use the soundbar when watching streaming since I am listening through my 5.1 system. Is a powered or passive splitter recommended?
Thanks.

For short distances and decent cables a passive may work. Where I work we use the Inday models and their products have always been reliable and perform well.
