Vizio 46" 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos Soundbar Hands-On

While this is not a standalone review, what I have done is combine a 46" Vizio 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar system with a P65 Quantum and written a hands-on article about how much I enjoyed what it offers for the money.

Mark,

Do sound bars like this also upmix sounds?

Just wondering because my brother in law loves my "Atmos" system but prefers sounds bars.

He has an Xbox One X while I have a PS4 Pro. Thanks to DTS X Neural and Dolby Surround, I can get great over head effects. Would this soundbar system do the same with his Xbox One X games that don't have Dolby Atmos?

Thank!
Sam

Yes, by default this system will upmix content to play over all the speakers through a virtualizing effect. It will do this in the "Movie" (on by default) or "Music" EQ settings.

If you change the EQ to "Direct" sound output will match the source encoding; i.e. stereo uses 2 speakers, 5.1 uses 5, etc.

You can also disable the surround and/or height speakers discretely.

Finally, if you change the height speaker setting to virtual, it can also do DTS Virtual:X where it only uses the 5 front firing speakers to produce simulated overhead sound, which is useful if your ceiling is not ideal for reflecting the upward sound back toward you.

Seems like there's a bit of granularity built into this system.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be sure to let my brother in law know.

The ceiling in his den is flat so it should be perfect for up-firing speakers.
