Does soundbar need to be HDMI 2.1 for eARC or just TV?

If I want to run all my devices like a 4K UHD player into the TV and the use eARC, does the soundbar/receiver have to be HDMI 2.1 compatible? I know the TV must be eARC compatible to output a high rez audio, but I wasn't aware if the soundbar had to be HDMI 2.1 compatible. I have long advocated that TV makers should implement an extra audio only HDMI output on the back of TVs.

Blurays: 115
HD-DVD: 12- YES I will be keeping them so I can own a piece of history

eARC is a function of the HDMI 2.1 hardware specifications. ARC will work but I believe both source and sink need to have eARC capability. Some hardware mfrs designed their HDMI 2.0 chipsets with the ability to be upgraded to eARC and VRR so you'd need to check with them.

I never trust an atom, they make up everything.

Yes, both the TV and the soundbar need to have eARC support.
