Soundbars for 2-channel sound system

I was in BB today and saw some good deals on soundbars. I have a cheap soundbar on my regular TV and it sounds much better than the TV's speakers. When I saw these sale prices, I thought about getting one to use a speaker for my computer audio collection (all 2-channel). I asked the salesman how to connect it and he said to use the HDMI out from my TV. I said I wasn't using a TV, but he said you can only use them with TVs. I didn't believe him but wasn't willing to gamble that he was wrong. So, how do I connect a soundbar to a computer? My laptop computer has an HDMI port so I guess that would work, but my office desktop only has analog (headphone) outputs. Also, I want to be able to use this as a general purpose speaker, not limited to a home theater. A related question, how does one connect a wireless sub to a regular analog sound system. To they come with transmitters? Thank you.3
