LG 2020 Soundbars - SN11RG, SN10YG, SN9YG, and SN8YG

LG’S NEW SOUNDBAR LINEUP

BRINGS PREMIUM AUDIO EXPERIENCE

TO EVEN MORE CONSUMERS

The biggest new feature is called AI Room Calibration, a system that automatically adjusts the sonic properties of LG’s premium soundbar models to better match the acoustics of the room.
“These advanced models are self-calibrating, able to recognize and analyze tones to accurately assess the dimensions of a given space and adjusting accordingly,” LG said in a press release.

A related onboard system lets LG’s premium soundbar models upscale lower-quality audio sources like MP3s or low-bitrate streaming music to “near-studio quality.”

Other features that LG is touting for 2020 are:

  • 4K passthrough
  • HDMI-eARC connectivity with support for Dolby TrueHD and hi-res audio
  • Google Assistant built-in for hands-free voice commands and smart home compatibility
  • Meridian Audio-tuned technologies such as Bass and Space, which boosts low-frequency reproduction and widens the soundstage and Image Elevation
  • Optional wireless surround speakers (SN11RG comes with two up-firing surround speakers)

When is it available to buy

After they announce it at CES is it available to purchase or do we have to wait a few more weeks/months?

Typically availability/price is announced along with the reveal at CES. So it could be "immediately" or holiday 2020 or even we don't know yet. But, for something like this I would expect it to be shipping soon-ish if not right after CES.

Main differences would be upfiring speakers on the rear surrounds and the room calibration. Assuming the sound bar, and rear speakers sound similar quality. Could also be a lot more $$$$? Hard to say without more info about the new product.

My mistake, that was the 2019 model but I expect the pricing to be about the same. LG has the official product page up now though.

Looks like it lists Movie mode on this as using "Dolby Surround" which I believe is the newest version of Pro Logic. I'm wondering if last year's model, the SL10YG also uses Dolby Surround in Movie mode?

Thanks for the link.
Interesting on the page it shows a picture with HDMI 2.1 but in the spec's it only lists HDMI 2.0 in the connectivity section.

Nice catch...

A lot of the time they try to get these new CES products up so fast after being announced at CES that there are mistakes in the spec section because they basically copy last years and make the appropriate changes.

Hopefully that is the case here and the new sound bars do have HDMI 2.1.

The stepdown SN9YG is a 5.1.2 capable system that does not include the rear speakers, but the optional SPK8 Wireless Rear Speaker Kit can be added for true surround performance. Both bars will include the same 8-inch subwoofer for low frequency effects.

So far their top model looks to be the same as last year's SL10YG except with the upfiring rear speaker and room calibration. And the fact the speakers are included for the rear and you don't have to buy them separately.

The 7 inch sub did not only not go low, what it did do was very flubby. A good 8 inch sub can actually produce very impactful and focused bass unless they are just trying to do loudness womping vs actually reproducing the bass frequencies. Regardless it seems I'll either get this set or the Klipsch for that room. I think 5.1.4 will be sufficient since the .4 is bouncy as is the 6/7 channel on this unit. Bouncy side surround would be problematic in the room I'll put this in anyhow.

I really hope LG has addressed the center channel from last year's model which for me was abysmal. I returned the SL10YG and got the Samsung Q90R which I really enjoy, but the lack of eARC which was supposed to be implemented, but has not seen the light of day has given me a sour taste for Samsung. I really hope LG steps up on this and makes the SN11RG a really solid alternative to the Q90R.

Cheers

Yeah, definitely don't buy anything from Samsung with the expectation they will add features. The only time I have gotten a new feature was when Samsung added DTS support to the original N950.

That’s what I’m hoping. I currently still have the SK10Y and the center is pretty awful.

Does q90r doesn't have earc ? I read the opposite around on different forums.

It doesn't. There was supposed to be a new firmware with eARC but it has yet to come out (it might never come).

An LG representative confirmed that although 4k pass through is supported, the SN11RG has only HDMI 2.0. Wouldn't this imply that 4k passthrough is limited to 4k60 or 4k120 at 4:2:0?

"Will this have full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports to allow for 4K120 with VRR and dynamic HDR pass through?

Ivanf · 21 hours ago
The specifications on our product page for the LG 7.1.4 ch High Res Audio Sound Bar with Dolby Atmos® and Surround Speakers, Model # SN11RG show that it supports 4K PassThrough and that it will have an HDMI 2.0 input that is HDCP 2.2 compliant and an HDMI 2.0 output that is also HDCP 2.2 compliant...^IFV"

If you just connect your external device directly to the TV, can you transmit the audio only to the soundbar?

Hi, I know the best way to connect bluray player to soundbar is to directly plug the hdmi output from player to the input of soundbar.
But what if I plug in the hdmi to the input of a LG TV supporting eARC and let TV pass the Dolby atmos signal to the soundbar through the eARC, will the sound quality or result be the same as the direct one? thanks.

oh. i think i got the answer here.

"With eARC, you can plug your HDMI devices directly into your TV and the TV will then send the uncompressed, high-quality audio to a soundbar, receiver, or amplifier directly from the eARC port."
(oops. i'm a newbie and cannot paste the link...)

LG's (as well as every other manufacturer) customer service reps are notorious for not knowing anything about new, upcoming products - other than what is listed on the product page - which is often just a cut and paste of the previous year's product page with very few corrections at this early stage.

Saying that... while the product page does show an HDMI 2.1 image with the soundbar - it is curious that there is no picture of the back connections anywhere...
