AFAIK, it's a conversion. I suspect it's success at the box office will have nothing to do with 3D and how good the 3D is or isn't.

With regard to the 3D, JJ Abrams has never been a big supporter. The trailers had a nice sense of depth and even a few limited popouts but quite honestly I don't think the movie was shot with 3D in mind. I'm expecting something along the lines of Star Trek Into Darkness (another Abrams 3D postconversion) - competent but not groundbreaking.

As to how well the movie will do, no doubt it will make a boatload of money but I think its longevity at the theaters will depend on how the original characters are treated. There are all sorts of rumors rolling around about Luke turning out to be the big bad and Han not making it to the end (again these are RUMORS, I have no insight into what will actually happen). But IF those kinds of rumors do pan out, I don't think the older fans who grew up on Star Wars will take it well and consequently probably won't support it to the extent necessary to get it to the top of the all time box office heap.

Also, I don't think Avatar is the top movie of all time - 3D or otherwise. I think that honor currently belongs to Jurassic World.

JW had highest opening but Avatar still highest. Im sure SW7 will be up there if not beat Avatar. It may not help 3d in terms of pq, but I'm sure its going to help the 3d market just for sales.

OK, I just couldn't resist, Have etickets for IMAX 3D on the 21st. Gives me plenty of time to watch all 6 of the prior episodes, plus Clone Wars.

Going to World Golf Village which is a really great IMAX 3D Theater.

There is not a single measure that would support that obscene assertion. I mean outside of it being a rehash of a superior movie with the same name, and it not even being a good movie, Avatar doing 60% more in world wide box office despite lower prices, etc.

The fact that I despised the movie makes me a little less than objective... but still.

I would add that the entertainment value means little when it comes to box office.

If the movie is good it will probably do 3B in WW. If its not... who knows.

I was talking about box office performance, not the relative quality of the movies, as I thought I'd read somewhere that Jurassic World had overtaken Avatar. A quick check of Boxofficemojo showed that was not the case.

* no spoilers here *

i watched star wars the force awaken 3D today at dolby cinema.

movie itself is mindblowing good.

about the 3D. it is nice. but not groundbreaking. there is good depth, but little to no pop up at all. it is better then any marvel efforts so far. but 3D aint as good as movies like avatar, teenage mutant hero turltles and amazing spiderman 2.

i would rate it 8 out of 10.

the sound is freaking incredible in dolby atmos. first movie i ever heard with dolby atmos and what a difference it makes.

i am used to imax sound which is already great, but my god going from imax to dolby atmos is like going from dvd to bluray. what a difference it makes!

Just got out of the IMAX 3D theater and it was a blast. The 3D was amazing with full range imaging. It was like the theater had an open wall right out to the stars with the ground beginning right in front of me.

I don't think the theater had Dolby Atmos but still the 28,000 watts completely encased me.

We managed to finish all 6 episodes plus Clone Wars yesterday so we were well prepared for this next chapter.

I ordered the box set of the Clone Wars TV series in Blu Ray which I'll start watching tomorrow to get over the withdraw. A story like this you just don't want to end, ever.

Now I want the Blu Ray 3D for my collection!

I'll go all the way with a 10 out of 10.

BTW- as I left the theater I noticed a couple of teenagers carrying digital audio recorders and stereo microphones.

Mentioned in the other thread, saw this at the ETX-branded large-format theater at AMC Disney Springs. The 3D was the RealD type which I have concluded is far superior to IMAX and other linear-polarized techniques, and was great (and I went in wishing it was going to be 2D).

There is one moment with a shot of
Spoiler!
that had everyone in the theater doing the "try to touch it" thing and laughing out loud. Great stuff.

I watched in Imax 3D today. 3D was very good. There is very good depth in a lot scenes. You feel the size of the ships or other things. Some popup effects such as debris, dirt, some sparks. One scene pop-out effect was very immersive.

Mostly along the lines of Star Trek Into Darkness but better. In some scenes 3d was just amazing. Actually all Starwars movies should be 3D.

Only 2.2 Billion to go to catch up to Avatar.

No idea when I'll see Star Wars. I won't go while it's so crowded. And since my GF would never see it(she never saw the first one in 1977 when she was in college, or any of them), I'll be going by myself.

I saw it in 2D last week at a corporate event. Now I have to figure out if its worth going back to see in 3D. I'm sure it is, but I may just wait until its out on blu ray or rent it in 3D when it comes out.

I saw it yesterday in 3D at an IMAX theater but got stuck in the 3rd row. Being that close and looking up the entire movie really hampered the viewing experience but I could tell that there were some really cool moments in 3D. It had me wishing I had better seats so I may try and go back once the crowds die down a bit.

The movie itself was really good as well. I've only seen the original 3 a long time ago so I'm not up on the entire Star Wars story, but I think I have a good enough understanding of it so it made the film fun to watch.

Good point about IMAX seating for 3D. I'm sure most experienced IMAX viewers have it figured out- I try to sit near the back so I am at mid screen for height. We got there about 30 minutes before show time and already 3/4 of the theater was full. By the time we got in, I found two seats just below center which was lucky. This theater is sold out for the week, all showings. There was a no show line and they left those in just before the beginning of the movie. I've never seen a movie get this much of a sell out, ever.

Jurassic World was like that earlier this year in my area. The IMax 3D showings were sold out by me.

My theater sucked. Normal RealD screening, single projector doing Left then Right eye with the same projector lens, so flicker and motion blur were distracting. There were a few instances where, because a character was moving left to right, it neutralized their depth. I can see why people have a different opinion when they see it in IMAX.

Flicker aside, I was mostly disappointed. Lots of shots of ships and landscapes, etc where they cranked up the 3D just to stretch as much depth as they could.

I was only impressed by one shot in the whole movie, when Rey's roaming around inside a huge wreckage out in the desert. At least I think that was the scene. There were some metal parts behind her and the lighting and the depth were really nice, and the shot was long enough to sort of appreciate it.

Looks like it's on track for 1 billion, not counting China which doesn't release until January. I think it's going to crush Avatar. I'll probably still wait for the Blu ray or I'll wait until the theaters empty out a month from now in an afternoon showing.

I saw this in 3D (Dolby 3D) but the presentation was out of whack, with some annoying crosstalk. Nevertheless, the movie and 3D are impressive enough that I am thinking of seeing it in an IMAX theater.

One thing that stood out was the shot of the imperial cruiser with its snout sticking nearly out of the screen.

Sorry to stray off-topic, but these two line brought back some great memories of the original SW movies.

When Empire Strikes Back was released, I had the same problem... GF wasn't interested. I was also in a rush to see it while being financially strapped. I remember going to the first matinee of the day (weekday). A 10am show with 1/2 price tickets. There were only about 10 other people in the theater (back when theaters were full size).

The best was the original SW movie. It was opening week, but the movie caught on quick and lines were long. There were four of us. I was always a sci-fi movie fan - that didn't prepare me for what I was about to see. Figured is was just another space movie.

When we finally made it into the theater, the only seats were up front - about 3rd row a bit to the right side. I thought "oh, crap - this is going to suck."

That opening scene when the star destroyer crosses the screen. My jaw dropped and I though "holy $***!" Having that "up front" seat almost made it a 3D experience. I was so mesmerized that I probably forgot to blink until the credits. Being that close to the screen never crossed my mind through the entire movie.

What great memories.

Thanks tom for looking that up. I was curious when it will be out. Maybe this will be like other 3D Disney releases and be available in 3D BD from a non USA source, maybe on VuDu as well in 3D.

I'm now watching the complete Clone Wars episodes. Seasons 1-6. Probably will hold me over until the BD is released.

Are there any stats out there on how much of the movie's business is coming from 3D showings? It would be interesting to see if this is helping to kill or feed the whole "3D is dying" thing.

Yes. I saw it Monday night and an AMC IMAX lite theater. When I watch 3D I rarely see anything that looks like it is coming out of the screen. To me it has always looked more like a window with depth inside. But that scene with the Imperial cruiser is one of the few times I thought it looked like something was coming out of the screen.

I remember having to wait through an entire showing to see The Empire Strikes back. The line wrapped around part of the mall outside and every showing was selling out. I saw it with a bunch of my friends. But back then we were only around 15 so none of us could drive. No way would I ever wait in line for anything like that now.

When I saw The Force Awakens this past Monday, it was an 11PM showing. I didn't need to wait in line for it but I was surprised the that theater was half full for such a late showing. And Eleven days after the movie came out.

I see the digital pre-order for a 2D version has been up for awhile on the Playstation Network. For only $15. I plan to get The Force Awakens on BD in 3D and in UHD. I just hope the price isn't stratospheric. At least I hope it comes out on a UHD BD.

From what I've read though, Star Wars is not well known in CHina. (Unlike Jurassic PArk which opened at the same time in China as the US to big numbers.) Which is supposed to be the reason they delayed showing The Force Awakens in China. They have been marketing the Star Wars brand there to increase awareness and hopefully increase the Box Office Numbers.

Finally saw it with my wife and daughter today in standard RealD 3D. A lot of 3D trailers in front it, several with promising looking 3D.

As for Star Wars ep. 7, I thought the 3D was really well done with medium range depth plus a small number of brief negative parallax effects here and there (not a lot of them and fairly restrained when they were used). Some shots were borderline strong 3D even. 3D definitely added to our visual-enjoyment and I expect, as with virtually all other 3D content I've experience to date, it will look even better at home.
